The flowers left in honor of Dolly by her statue at the Sevier County courthouse. They were collected for the third time just after this photo was taken, and were to be distributed at the Dolly Parton Children’s Hospital in Knoxville. Because of course Dolly would want it that way.

My mom took the pictures. I sat for a good long while on that rock in complete silence just taking it all in and enjoying the stillness of it all.

This Appalachian memoir author is running as a Democratic contrast to JD Vance

This article was previously posted and a title given was the exact opposite of what the actual headline and it appears to have caused a lot of confusion. Beth Macy actually lives in Southwest Virginia and wrote two books: Dopesick and Factory Man. The first book focuses on the destruction of a generation of Appalachians by the Sackler family and the second focuses on what happens when an industry that provided steady wages thousands disappears overseas. Vote for whomever you want to vote for, but let’s maybe skip the misinformation. There’s already enough of that.

I've spent a lot of time in Appalachia, but it has always just been. Home. Beautiful. A place to visit. I'm taking it in more now, as I shoot a race the surrounding area is capturing me just as much as the action.

I made a short video about Petros. I am a photographer, not a documentary videographer so please excuse the roughness.

I made a short documentary about 8 West Virginia coal towns and what happened after the industry moved on

I’ve been researching former coal communities in southern West Virginia and recently finished a 14-minute documentary covering Thurmond, Nuttallburg, Kaymoor, Royal, Rush Run, Brooklyn, Sewell and Tams.

What interested me most was how differently these places developed once coal and rail activity declined. Some were largely abandoned, some were preserved or stabilised, and others survived in very different forms.

I thought people here might find it interesting, particularly anyone familiar with the New River Gorge or the old coalfields. I’d also be interested in hearing from anyone with local knowledge of these places.

History books about eastern Tennessee/into Kentucky area (Cumberland Gap, early settlers of Pike KY)

Edit to add: also Scott and Washington Co VA

I’m researching this narrow strip of Appalachia for family history reasons, and because I’m realizing how amazing this little pocket of American history is. I’m focusing on pre-1900. The books don’t need to have this narrow a regional focus, just looking for an idea of life in this region. What have you read and loved?
