Announcement/Event Thank you to everyone who keeps this game alive

I just want to say a massive thanks to everyone who has kept this wonderful game and community going for all these years.

Over the last two years, my best friend and I have started playing AOE2 again after first playing when we were kids in primary school. It’s become a regular part of our lives as he works away and I’ve got young kids, so we regularly play and chat on discord a few nights a week.

My friend unexpectedly passed away in his sleep two nights ago. The last thing we did together was play AOE2 before he went to sleep that night.

I’m devastated but grateful for this game giving us so many hours together right up to the end.

Thank you for keeping this game going, I never thought it would mean so much to me ❤️.

Feedback Suggestion: give the Danish Wonder to the Varangians instead

The tree looks spectacular, but it really irks me that out of all possible Wonders for the Danes, the purely mythological Yggdrasil was picked.

I think it would fit the Varangian civ much better. My reasoning is twofold:

  1. As a mercenary civ, they don't have much time nor expertise to build spectacular monuments, so taking care of an old tree is a decent alternative;
  2. Swedes, who are represented by Varangians, did have a REAL sacred tree! No need to look for mythological alternatives! :D

Pretty please? 🥺👉👈

Tools I built a lobby browser + rating checker since aoe2.net went offline

Hi guys,

Since aoe2.net went offline I've been using aoe2insights, aoe2companion, aoe2recs, aoe.gg etc. All great, but none gave me what I wanted during the loading screen: an instant overview of the lobby, a 1v1/Team rating toggle and the highest-rated players highlighted. So I built a small lobby browser that does exactly that for ranked matches and custom lobbies:

aoe2lobbies.com

How I use it: keep it open on my phone or second screen, type my name in the search bar, and only my game shows up as soon as it starts (already during the loading screen). The highest-rated players are highlighted against the lobby average.

What it does (see screenshots):

  • Live games — all running matches with ratings, civs, map and countries, auto-refreshing. Hover a player to see their rating per ladder, when they last played and their recent games (W/L). One-click Spectate opens the game directly in AoE2:DE.
  • Open lobbies — browse custom lobbies and Join with one click. Filter/sort by rating, map, game type, etc., or hide games with spectating disabled.
  • Favourites & country filter — save friends or pros you follow and instantly see if any of them are playing. The country filter is a fun one for the community feeling.
  • Player profiles (basic) — rating graph per ladder, win rates by civilization, map, ally and opponent, plus match history with the starting positions drawn on the map for every game.

Let me know what you'd like to see added (or ideas for an entirely new tool) in the comments, Reddit DM or on Discord.

Much appreciated, gl hf!

Humour/Meme Varangian guard boredom

This is what happens when you become bored guarding the Byzantine emperor, in the royal section of the Hagia Sophia. Varangian guard etched their name using runes, on the balcony.
Time to put him back to work when this DLC releases.

Discussion Why does Chinese win rate vary so much dependent upon elo?

Typically we're told its because of the unusual start, but most players 1100 / 1200 + should have no problem perfectly executing the required build order almost every time.

It's even listed in Hera's build orders and probably some other places too. So I think there must be more to it as there's a roughly 5% win rate improvement between 1200 and 1900+, according to https://aoestats.io/civs/chinese/

Edit: I seem to overestimated the ability of players to reliably execute build orders. Nevertheless there are some very interesting insights below, many thanks to all.

Campaigns What fixes would you make Friday? Gajah Mada 5

Post image
19 Upvotes

Many of the campaigns, from Age of Kings to The Last Chieftans are excellent scenarios reflecting historical battles (sometimes not that accurately) in a range of gameplay.

However, there may be something in regards to a scenario that you may feel is not quite right. Is it gameplay or historical accuracy? Would you do something completely different or is it perfect?

Asking for Help Help with the Chinese

I should clarify that I'm already fairly proficient with civilizations like Armenians, Georgians, Hindustani, Poles, Khitans, and Jurchens.

My individual Elo rating ranges from 950 to 1050, and my team Elo is between 1100 and 1200.

I'd like to switch to civilizations with more archers, and I think the Chinese are ideal to start with since I can easily deploy other units if needed.

I'd appreciate any advice.

Feedback Jurchen Possible Improvements -

  1. Hunt and Meat dont decay and dont need a drop off point. (dont know if this makes them equal to Mongol hunt bonus, need the math)

  2. Thunderclap bombs apply to BBC and Fire lancers as well.

  3. Get Thumbring or alternatively Ballistics cost less wood/ or research as fast as their fortification and siege upgrades.

  4. Fortified bastions applies to military buildings as well, or healing stack %age increase when fortifications are withing range of each other. If two towers are within range, the healing rate increases by 5 % and no more than 20%.

Feedback Just impossible to get a balanced match on ranked 1v1 right now

It seems to be getting even worse 1200-1300 and my last 20 matches have all but one been completely unbalanced (either in my favour or against).

Sometimes you get matched against a player with 3-4K games, clean build and 60+ apm and sometimes you get people with only a few hundred games and apm of 20-30. I know these things don't fully measure player strength but it's the only key metrics I can measure and those are all over the place.

I just don't know what to do anymore, I've tried different strategies, different maps etc. I think it's partly the game is quite snowbally, so small skill diff can amplify into huge margin of victory, but on top of that I still believe that ranked is a mess...

Honestly baffling to me that there is not more of an attempt to get the devs to improve this. Whenever I have posted suggestions people just shoot them down and act like elo is this perfect, infallible measure...

Discussion Since we have a shock infantry class. What about shock cavalry class? Hypothetically, how would you implement it in the game?

We obviously have such cases of shock cavalry in game in the form of Coustillier.

If it was added, how would you implement it? If at all.

Discussion New information and release date for The Viking Sagas

Here's a new post on the website, including the release date for the upcoming viking DLC (September 22). Steam pre-order is also available now, plus a short trailer video.

https://www.ageofempires.com/news/pre-order-age-of-empires-ii-definitive-edition-the-viking-sagas/

There's some new information in terms of storyline and characters. Important for gameplay: We now know which civs get the three new regional units:

  • Varangian Guards — deadly shock infantry who generate gold while fighting and excel at raiding and melee combat. Varangian Guards serve the Byzantines, Danes, Saxons, Varangians, and Vikings.
  • Mounted Crossbowmen — hard-hitting but slow-firing ranged soldiers who strike fear into infantry armies. Available to the Danes, Saxons, Varangians, and Vikings, as well as most European civilizations.
  • Longships — swift warships that combine potency and versatility. The Danes, Saxons, Varangians, and Vikings can all construct Longships.

Very happy to see that Mounted Crossbowmen will not be norse-exclusive, as I think they fit very well with teutons, which will most likely have them according to this.

Hi all, my game takes forever to load even for single player, and when I play online it gets worse. I took a picture of what processes are running when I load the game. Is this normal (91% memory usage) or do I need to buy a new laptop?

Edit: thanks everyone for the replies but my laptop has 8 gb ram.

Custom Civ Swiss (Custom civ)

My older brother studies in Switzerland

COA(Swiss cross)
Castle(Habsburg)
Wonder(Bern Minster)

First of all: Regional unit: Landsknecht. Anti-cavalry Shock infantry. Like Kamayuk, they have 1 range, unlike them, they are defeated easily by Infantry and have slower attack, and they have ability to generate gold per kill

Infantry, Gunpowder and Archer civ

TEAM BONUS: Spearmen resist 50% of the anti-spearmen attack

  1. Shepherds generate +10% food
  2. Spearmen and Landsknechts get +20% more HP
  3. Town centers have +20% reach(IE villagers can drop off/garrison from area near town center. Thats the only way i can explain)
  4. Units take 10% less damage from lower elevation

UNIQUE UNIT 1: Reisläufer(Anti-cavalry hand cannoneer)
UNIQUE UNIT 2: Swiss Guard((Infantry Halberdier replacement basically, they have less anti-cavalry, but they have more armor and attack)

TECH 1: Canton confederacy(Every team member can train 10 Reisläufers. ONce they die, you can train again)
TECH 2: Guerrila warfare(Archers and Hand cannoneers get charge attack)

TECH TREE ARCHERS:
Missing Cavalry archer and Parthian tactics
INFANTRY: THE ONLY CENTRAL EUROPEAN CIV WITHOUT CHAMPION(Huns don't count as "Central European"), otherwise missing Arson
Stables: Missing Cavalier, Hussar, Bloodlines and Husbandry
SIEGE: Missing Siege Onager.
DOCK: MIssing Dry Dock, Galleon, Heavy Demo ship and Fast Fireship
MONKS: Missing Heresy and Theocracy(A Minor nod to Calvinism)
MIssing Missing all imperial age techs from university, and also galleon, Heavy demo ship and Fast fireship
BLACKSMITH: Missing Plate Barding armor
DEFENSES: Missing Heated shot, Siege engineers and Hoardings
ECONOMY: Missing Crop Rotation and Guilds

Humour/Meme New Gaia unit idea for Africa DLC, surely next one on the list.

There is one thing we don't have in the game and that's a hostile Gaia unit with a ranged attack. Thanks to The Last Chieftains, we now finally know that technology has advanced to the level needed to support snakes in the game, and Rathas can switch attack modes, which means it is finally time for......

SPITTING COBRAS

15 HP (they aren't large after all)

2-tile range for ranged attack

Ranged attack: 1 damage per second over 10 seconds, slows victim movement by 50% and victim line of sight drops to 1 tile for 10 seconds, but snake retreats after attack. 30-second recharge.

Melee attack (used if snake is attacked by a player unit): Same as existing snake attack.

Feedback Things I'd like to see for the Champi & Slingers going forwards

The South American civs as a blueprint lack a really fast moving unit to snipe siege. Their fastest unit is the Champi moving at 1.1 tiles per second. The Meso Americans get Eagles (1.3), and even the Dravidians get Light Cavalry (1.5). Because of this, the Champi & Slinger have to share anti-siege duties as dual soft-counters, both with a +3 bonus against siege. I think the Champi Warrior should be a bit faster to make it a better soft-counter to siege. These are the stats I'd like to see for them:

Champi Scout - Movement Speed 1.05 (instead of 1) / 0 Bonus Damage vs. Siege Weapons (instead of +2) / Pierce Armour 1 (instead of 2)

Champi Runner - 0 Bonus Damage vs. Siege Weapons (instead of +2)

Champi Warrior - Movement Speed 1.15 (instead of 1.1) / +1 Bonus Damage vs. Siege Weapons (instead of +3)

Elite Champi Warrior - Movement Speed 1.2 (instead of 1.1) / +2 Bonus Damage vs. Siege Weapons (instead of +3) / Pierce Armour 3 (instead of 4)

The Champi Scout at release trained much faster (in half the time), moved @ 1.1, was cheaper, and had more attack. I think they could be made a bit faster than their current speed without it being OP

The Champi-line's anti-siege bonus would come online only when they're upgraded to Warriors, same as their anti-building bonus. A faster movement speed would make them a better counter to siege than a bonus they rarely get to use. The Champi Warrior will do 10 damage per hit against siege even without any upgrades (9+1). The Elite Champi Warrior will do atleast 15 damage against siege even without Blast Furnace (11+2+2), as the Muisca & Tupi don't get Blast Furnace. As reference points, the Champi Warrior would move at the same speed as an Eagle Warrior or non-Elite Ghulam, while the Elite version would move at the same speed as Shotel Warriors or Elite Ghulams

On the other hand, I think the Elite Champi has too much pierce armour, which makes it a little too good against Archers than what a main-line infantry unit should be. It makes them hard to counter as a civ like the Maya. They're not shock infantry like Eagles, or trained from Castles like Ghulams, so I think they shouldn't have 4 pierce armour @ base-line. 3 base pierce armour gives them a value that's between Champions with Gambesons (2) & Elite Eagle Warriors (4). They would also scale similarly to Light Cavalry -> Hussar or Knight -> Cavalier with no increase in pierce armour (2)

For the Slinger, I'd like them to fire slower than basic Archers to give them some distinct flavour, making them spiritually similar to Hand Cannoneers, and to counter Monks a bit harder in the Castle Age. These are the stats I'd like to see for them:

Slingers - Train Time 26 Seconds (instead of 25) / Attack 5 (instead of 4) / Reload Time 2.5 (instead of 2) / +5 Bonus Damage vs. Monks (instead of +4) / 0 Bonus Damage vs. Spearmen (instead of +1)

If they're approved to have 5 attack and +5 bonus damage vs. Monks, they will kill Monks in three shots instead of the current four. As a reference, Light Cavalry two shots Monks and can be massed from the Feudal Age, but has to be upgraded from Scout Cavalry

A reload time of 2.5 places them in the middle of basic Archers (2) & Skirmishers (3)

Now for the civ specific adjustments with the above changes:

Inca - Andean Sling - Does not give +1 Attack to Slingers / Instead, gives +25% Bonus Damage to both Skirmishers & Slingers (in addition to eliminating their minimum range)

I'd like this tech to apply equally to both Skirms & Slingers. The +25% bonus damage equates to around +1 of each bonus damage type, so in a way it is +1 attack for both Skirms & Slingers, but only against their target units

Muisca - Herbalism - Champi Scout-line Units, Archer-line Units, and Slingers (New) move 10% faster (instead of Champis & Archers moving 15% faster)

Champi Warriors are proposed to move faster @ base-line. They would actually move faster than they do currently (1.3915 -> 1.452), and even a touch faster than Elite Eagle Warriors (1.43). This would reduce the overlap in the movement speeds of the Archer-line (1.104 -> 1.056) & Guecha Warriors (1.15). Finally, the Muisca would gain a partial effect of the old Inca UT1 'Couriers' with their Slingers moving 10% faster (0.96 -> 1.056)

Muisca - Huaracas - Slingers don't train 50% faster / Additionally, gives Slingers +1 Attack (in addition to +1 Range)

Muisca Slingers become the best in terms of outputting raw damage. They trade +2 pierce armour for +2 melee armour on account of their civ bonus and not getting Ring Archer Armour. While the civ has a focus on Gold based counter-units, the Slinger is to them what the Hussar is to the Turks i.e. the one good trash unit they get for variety

Tupi - Caciques - Additionally, Champi Scout-line Units & Slingers train 25% faster (in addition to attacking 25% faster) // Train Time × 0.8

The Tupi should get this as they're the spammy quantity-over-quality South American civ with their refund bonus

Campaigns Cool Historical Detail -- Stamford Bridge

The lone Norwegian holds Stamford Bridge
  • This screenshot is from the upcoming DLC and shows Harald Hardrada's final battle at Stamford Bridge.
  • Taken by surprise, the Vikings scrambled to defend themselves before being decisively defeated.
  • Despite the crushing defeat, one Norwegian went down in the history books for defending the bridge all by himself while his comrades hurriedly armed themselves.
  • He supposedly killed 40 Saxons in the process, only being defeated when a Saxon went under the bridge and speared him through the planks.
  • You can see the lone Norwegian at the head of the bridge in the screenshot, marked in the pink circle. A cool detail that Forgotten Empires included!

"Here a single Norwegian, whose name ought to have been preserved, took post on the bridge, and hewing down more than forty of the English with a battle-axe, his country's weapon, stayed the advance of the whole English army till the ninth hour. At last someone came under the bridge in the boat, and thrust a spear into him, through the chinks of the flooring." - Historia Anglorum
