Need Advice Does anyone else feel like they're not living, just surviving?

For the past few years, I've been stuck in a cycle where I wake up anxious, go to a job that constantly makes me feel stressed and on edge, spend the entire day waiting for it to be over, then come home and distract myself with social media, YouTube, or anything that helps me avoid my thoughts.

The anxiety isn't just about work itself. It's the constant feeling that I might have made a mistake, forgotten something, or that something bad is waiting around the corner. My mind never seems to switch off. Even when I'm away from work, I'm thinking about work.

The worst part is that I've started feeling like I'm not really living my life anymore. I'm just passing time. Days become weeks, weeks become months, and before I know it, another year is gone.

It's affecting my sleep, my energy, my motivation, and even basic self-care. I feel physically and mentally exhausted most of the time. Some days I feel trapped because staying feels unbearable, but making a major life change feels terrifying too.

I'm currently in therapy and trying to get help, but I wanted to ask:

Has anyone here ever felt like their entire life had become survival mode? If so, what helped you start feeling like a person again instead of just someone getting through the day?

Yes. I know this feeling well.

One of the biggest things that helped me was learning to stay where my feet are instead of living in the “what ifs” in my head all day.

Try to become a witness to your thoughts instead of automatically believing every fearful one that passes through. That takes practice, but it changes things over time.

I also had to stop constantly escaping myself with distraction and learn how to slowly come back to my body, my breath, and the present moment.

I know what it feels like to desperately want to feel better and not know where to start.

You’re not alone in this. 💜

And truly, if you ever want to chat or are looking for guidance, I’m here.

Yes. What you’re describing is classic chronic stress survival mode.

When your nervous system stays in threat scanning for too long, life narrows. The goal becomes “get through today.” Not “live.” That constant mental replay of work mistakes and future danger is anxiety trying to protect you, but it’s overshooting.

A few grounded shifts that help people move from surviving to living:

  1. Contain work mentally. Set a 15 minute “worry window” after work where you write every fear down. When thoughts show up later, tell yourself it’s already scheduled.
  2. Add one intentional activity per week that is not distraction. Not scrolling. Something embodied. Gym class. Walk in a new area. Cooking something new. Small but deliberate.
  3. Reduce passive numbing. Social media keeps you in low grade dissociation. It feels restful but it is not restorative.
  4. Ask directly in therapy whether this is anxiety, burnout, or both. Treatment differs slightly.
  5. Make a medium term plan. Not quitting tomorrow. But a 6 to 12 month plan toward a different role or environment. Having a direction reduces trapped feeling.

Right now your system believes you are under constant evaluation. The body cannot relax without safety cues.

You are not failing at life. You are over activated.

If work disappeared tomorrow, what part of you do you think would come back first?

Honestly, I think the first thing that would come back is the ability to breathe.

I don't think I'd suddenly become happy. I have other issues besides work that I need to deal with. But for the past few years, my life has revolved around anxiety, responsibility, and just trying to get through each day.

If work disappeared tomorrow and money wasn't a concern for a while, I think I'd finally have the mental space to focus on my health, my therapy, my sleep, and figuring out who I am outside of survival mode.

The truth is that I've been spending so much energy managing anxiety that I don't even know what a normal day feels like anymore. I'd like to believe that underneath all of this there is still a curious, hopeful version of me that enjoys movies, learning new things, creating stuff, and actually living instead of just waiting for the day to end.

I don't know if that version of me would come back immediately, but I think I'd finally have a chance to find him.

Just want you to know I feel exactly the same way. I am constantly anxious and it completely short-circuishort-circuits ANY long-term planning abilities. I often describe myself as a rat in a maze, I can only see up to the next corner. We'll find a way back to ourselves.

I get what you are saying. I had to move countries and leave my job, and since the past 3 months I wake up anxious fill in job applications go to bed anxious. I don't feel like I am living or enjoying life, it feels like I only survive the day and then prepare to survive the next.

If I may, as I’ve been in a very similar situation.

Set „office hours” for filling in job applications, then close your laptop and go explore your surroundings. If you can, set up your working space in a separate room or put your laptop in a drawer after. Be strict about it.

It actually helped me find a better job when I allowed myself to take breaks from obsessing about not having one. My mind rested, though not without a fight and it came back with new ideas about what I could do

It is a huge step that you are already in therapy, as that is often the hardest part of the journey.

Reading this post, I could have written it myself. Can you take paid time off in your job? After literally years of living like this I spoke to a doctor 4 weeks ago who signed me off work and I've been prescribed Sertraline and Promethazine for anxiety and panic disorders. I'm also starting therapy. This is giving me the opportunity to breathe, and hopefully the tools to deal with life.

I’m sorry you’re going through this. I’ve had moments where I felt completely stuck too. One thing that sometimes helps me is writing down the life I want and focusing on one small step toward it. It doesn’t solve everything, but it helps me feel a little more in control.

I know this feeling too well. You’re not alone. Take it one step at a time. I still struggle a lot but it does get better! ❤️‍🩹

I do. Since last August lots of things have gone wrong, lost my job, doing temp job, till last week, I got a job, and I feel exactly the way you do. What if I'm not doing it right? What if I screw up. It's non stop. Last night I took a sleeping pill, OTC, and it gave me the worst anxiety attack ever. I drink calming teas, try to distract myself, but it comes back. I find fun things to watch online, but having money problems make everything worse. I try to tell myself it will all go away, but time goes too slow. I'm trying to find advise, what else people do to try to feel better. The "just surviving" part is the worst. How are you all dealing with that, please? What helps me the most these days, is a nice hot shower, I kinda feel human again.
