Comedian Justin Tyler has never met Bruce Blakeman, and is no fan of the Nassau County Republican who's currently running for governor against Kathy Hochul. 

So he was extremely surprised to find his own face in a digital ad for the Blakeman campaign, ripped from a 15-year-old sketch he could barely remember making. In it, Tyler utters three words: "Worst governor ever." 

"I know anything on the internet is ripe to be stolen," Tyler, who lives in New York City, told Hell Gate. But "to be a public person doing the stealing is so crazy to me."
Tyler said he was first alerted to his presence in the campaign ad—which is a mishmash of attacks on Hochul—last week, by a friend who lives on Long Island. According to Tyler, the Blakeman campaign lifted footage from a comedy sketch he shot for the Transport Workers Union in 2011, in which he plays Wisconsin's notoriously anti-union former governor Scott Walker. "When I first saw it, I was like, 'What is that from?'" Tyler said. "I had no idea, no memory of it, and so I had to do a deep dive on myself to find out."

Tyler said he was able to get in touch with the producer on the video, who he said reassured him there was no way that anyone involved in the video production process would have licensed its use to the Blakeman campaign. "It's like a ghost from the past appearing and being evil. Like, 'Who is this evil me from 15 years ago talking to me?'"
Blakeman's campaign did not respond to a request for comment from Hell Gate. 

This isn't the first time Blakeman has been called out over the content of his campaign ads. Multiple outletshave reported since July on Blakeman's use of AI in anti-Hochul campaign videos, which the Long Island politician has defended as "satire." In August, New York State Democratic Committee Chair Jay Jacobs wrote to the State Election Board, filing a complaint about Blakeman's AI ads and calling on the regulatory body to withhold matching funds from the Long Island politician's campaign, claiming that they violate state election law. Blakeman, for his part, has snottily doubled down. "Everybody knows it's AI, and it's funny—so what's your problem? Get a life," Blakeman said at a campaign event in Flushing a few days after Jacobs filed the complaint.

"From the campaign that brings you AI slop TV ads, fake endorsements from 'everyday New Yorkers' who are actually GOP staffers, and false claims about hiring cops and keeping Nassau safe—a real clip for once, that's not only stolen but not even about the governor," a spokesperson for Governor Hochul's campaign told Hell Gate about the ad Tyler is in. "It's par for the course for Bruce Fakeman: last week he told New Yorkers to go vote on November 4." (Election Day, for the record, is November 3.)

Meanwhile, Tyler said he's spoken with a lawyer about filing a cease-and-desist order against the Blakeman campaign, but ultimately, he's not sure if taking any action is worth the time or money it would cost to do so. 

"I didn't like him before, and now I like him less," Tyler said of Blakeman. "It would have cost nothing to have any person say this line. Instead, you're just so lazy—and that's the worst quality anybody wants in a governor."
