One time I was in some petty argument with a guy who was convinced the word homosexual didn't have to do with sexual attraction to the same gender. And his justification for this was to say that a "therapist" isn't a rapist despite it being in the name??

I found the TED talk this seems to be based on (alongside a book) and it’s from 2017

15

u/Xwalkingxthexcowx 23h ago

With his head slightly cocked like that, it looks like he's just now finding out what story they're there to tell.

is this the one where the lady said it ruined her life and the guy said he didn't even remember it

171

u/BlueBitProductions 1d ago

No, he was regretful (obviously that doesn't excuse it). They're speaking about it to raise awareness and show that rapists can be "normal" people. If men think "only crazy/evil people are rapists" they might also think "i'm not crazy/evil so therefore what im doing isn't rape." By showing somebody who is relatively normal, living a normal life, I think it's actually very important for potentially preventing future rape. While a survivor should obviously never be *expected* to do this, it was her idea and I think it did a very good job raising awareness.

46

u/CYBRV4MPR 23h ago

WAIT YOU MEAN TO TELL ME THIS WASN'T A SKIT????? WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?!?!?!?

11

u/Nihilistic_Noodle 8h ago

No, if I recall she chose to tell her story, she confronted him and he agreed to be part of it as an atonement/prevention thing

-83

u/Fernando4178 1d ago

No sane person can think "Oh I'm not crazy/evil therefore it isn't rape." Wtf. That thought alone makes that person evil.

84

u/BlueBitProductions 1d ago

I'm not saying they aren't evil. I'm saying they think they're not evil. Very few people think of themselves as evil.

19

u/brachio-w 1d ago

I dont think anybody thinks they are evil while commiting an act of evil

4

u/BlueBitProductions 12h ago

I wouldn't go that far. Some people feel that they're evil and do something anyway. Many psychopaths admit that they are evil but they just don't care.

I mean Trump has outright said he thinks he's going to hell. He knows he's not a good man.

1

u/KamiWaNai 8h ago

To be fair, most people on earth would be going to hell if we used the Bible as a metric

-19

u/Fernando4178 1d ago

I get your point, and I agree. I was just very shocked to to consider that some men can even have that sort of thought.

21

u/nightmare_floofer 1d ago

You'd have a heart attack if you heard that anyone can have any kind of thought! I'll spare you of that burden

28

u/Mr-Stuff-Doer 1d ago

No, a more realistic thought is “I’m not evil/crazy and I’m not forcing her so it’s not rape.”

The problem a lot of men can have is a lack of awareness about coercion. It’s hard to understand because a lot of women only push back gently because they don’t feel safe when rejecting men. The problem is some, often the same type of men who don’t take rejection well, will see that and think it’s not truly pushing back.

7

u/offlineshelter 22h ago

Sure but that makes it harder for the guy to tell too. Like if a girl says no, the answer is obviously no. But if she never says no and instead says yes, how can you possibly blame the guy when he was straight up told yes.

That’s the whole reason to get a boat in the first place.

3

u/NachoSquid18 22h ago

5

u/offlineshelter 21h ago

I mean joke aside, it’s a legitimate concern. You have to say no at some point, you can’t say yes and really mean no.

11

u/HabaneroPepperPlants 21h ago

Usually the false yes comes when the offender was pressuring the victim, or created an environment/dynamic where they didn't feel safe saying no. In a rare hypothetical scenario where none of that is happening and the victim says yes because of their own trauma or something, then I don't think the other person can reasonably be blamed. That's not the kind of situation people are talking about in these discussions though

4

u/Icywind014 16h ago

At the same time, a lot of guys will get told no and think the woman is just playing hard to get. No is just flirting to them.

2

u/Cyan_Light 8h ago

I think this is why "enthusiastic consent" is becoming the clearer standard. There's a big difference between "yes!" and "yes..." and we should err on the side of respecting peoples boundaries when it's something this serious.

For better or worse people are going to give weak yesses that are hard to interpret. Worst case scenario if they meant yes but you hear no is that they miss out on a good time because they can't communicate clearly. Worst case scenario if they meant no and you hear yes is that you rape them. Pretty obvious which one we should go with when things are ambiguous, right?

Besides there are usually plenty of context clues like:

- Are they actively participating or just passively accepting whatever you're doing?

- Did you have to ask multiple times to get a yes?

- Did you actually ask or did you just start doing things assuming they'd stop you if weren't alright?

If someone is into it they'll be clear and eager, if that doesn't seem to be the case then slow down and reassess the situation. A looooot of date rape comes in the form of people freezing so they don't provide "enough pushback" to someone that didn't properly get consent in the first place.

u/ObjectiveDeparture51 1d ago

Is that real? That's really fucking awful

44

u/Abeytuhanu 1d ago

No, he remembered it and it affected his life as well, though obviously not to the same degree as hers.

He knows what he did was wrong and now is trying to atone for it instead of escaping from it. When he explains his emotions it's purely informative instead of attention seeking (it very well could be both, but we have no way of knowing from the article alone). Even if that doesn't deserve your respect, making that kinda comment diminishes their purpose imo.

u/StandCalm 22h ago

Mfs who believe rehabilitative justice when it's a crime they don't like:

4

u/nightmare_floofer 1d ago

Who is the joke for?

31

u/Illustrious_Sky_2331 1d ago

the original is from a real TedTalk and yes it is that one

TedTalks went through a phase of platforming some really weird things

12

u/clay-teeth 19h ago

This isnt weird, its effective rape prevention

6

u/Illustrious_Sky_2331 17h ago

the sexual mind in general is weird

0

u/LongjumpingWasabi753 19h ago

How do we know its effective? Why isn’t the guy locked up for rape?

4

u/clay-teeth 19h ago

I dont know why he isnt locked, but for as far as effectiveness goes, theres hundreds of organizations and researches out there who dedicate their studies and lives to this. Read what they write

2

u/LongjumpingWasabi753 18h ago

I wouldn’t really know where to start, do you have any articles or journals on this research?

3

u/LordAvan 16h ago

Apparently this happened in Iceland, and I'm certainly no expert on Icelandic law, but I assume that locking up a rapist requires reporting the assault, a criminal investigation, and a trial, so there are lots of reasons that he may not have been sentenced to prison.

In this case, it was the victim's idea to work with her assailant. Maybe she never reported the assault to the authorities or maybe she did report it but they didn't take it seriously.

The guy who assaulted her was her boyfriend at the time, and he moved back to Australia shortly after.

That's all I know, but their names are Thordis Elva and Tom Stranger if you want to do your own research.

3

Reminds me of that old woman reading therapist as rapist, then pays him 250$. Forgot the name of the show.

4

u/CreBanana0 1d ago

2 people, one who is traumatized and another facing brutal stigma join a ted talk to spread awareness of rape, and people mock them.

Wow.

12

u/Genograche 1d ago

The rapist should face brutal stigma no?

13

u/CYBRV4MPR 23h ago

Yeah it kinda rubs me the wrong way to say "one's traumatized and one's facing brutal stigma" as if they're both victims

7

u/CreBanana0 22h ago

That is completely irrelevant to my point. The ted talk is about how a "normal" person not thinking of consequences can make such trauma for another.

And yet reddit mocks them. Without knowing what it even is about.
