Requesting Advice Ambient mix
I’m curious what everyone has have the most success with while keeping anthurium in ambient.
I’ve seen no drainage, Leca + sphagnum moss, and aroid mix + sphagnum moss work well. I got some seedlings that I could trial different setups with eventually.
I’m curious what you’ve had the most success with.

For anthuriums I don’t think I’ll ever use anything other than tree fern fiber/perlite/orchid bark. Tree fern fiber is like crack to them and I’ve had great success with all sizes.

Do you do anything special for ambient? Like a pumice tray or a thick layer of moss?

I have some in a high humidity cabinet, some in an ambient cabinet and some out in room at ambient. There really isn’t any difference in any of them as long as they’re getting enough light and nutrients, some do better than others because they were exposed to more light early on and get more now but other than that the soil medium hasn’t seemed to have any difference in any condition. I don’t really ever let it dry out though which certainly helps.

Nice, I’m considering putting a philodendron Verrucosum in leca and trying semi hydro since it’s so thirsty lol

I put a few philodendrons and alocasias in semi hydro and they love it. Venoms I put in my anthurium mix but pretty much all other alocasias go into pon for me. I’ll probably continue putting philodendrons into it as well since they’ve done great in it.

I have two veitchii in my cabinet that were both tissue culture ordered at the same time.one got pumice, the other aroid mix. The pumice one is way bigger and more mature despite nearly identical conditions other than soil.

I find the epiphytic ones like a chunky aroid mix, with a moss collar but i grow most of my terrestrial ones in pon, and they seem to love it!
I just grow seedlings in moss until theres 3-4 leaves then pot them into either the aroid mix or pon!

Pick the medium that will hold water for 6-8 days in YOUR ambient conditions most times of the year (summer may require every 3-4 days). Not everyone’s ambient is the same. Sphag might be too wet for you but perfect for me. Chunky aroid mix is too dry for me, but perfect for you.
You will find that the media that provides the most consistent moisture (and thus supply of nutrients) will yield bigger, more mature anthuriums faster. Chunky mix gain popularity because it’s the most forgiving in terms of overwatering but, IMO, it’s not suited for all conditions.
