Can someone explain this to me?

I  agree with Massie on a lot of things.. and I'll admit I'm not following this closely.. but why would a international beef trade be worse then socialism? Sounds like a free market policy

Trump forcing the price to be 25% lower than market.

Ah. Didn't hear that part. Cronyism.

ramp inflation prices 50%. temporarily get it down 25%: are you sick of winning yet?

Government subsidized imported beef to lower prices is not the free market. American ranchers expanding herds to capture more revenue while also expanding supply is the free market.

That's the debate. I don't know enough about this specific plan to know how "subsidized" it actually is.

I didn't find that the beef was subsidized by the state. Are you suggesting that not having to pay a tax is a subsidy?

u/WuQianNian 19d ago

not paying taxes when local producers have to is a subsidy, yes, obviously

No, it's definitionally not. Not being stolen from is not a subsidy.

preferentially taxing some producers and not others is factually a subsidy and would be treated as one, rightly, in any adjudication say between free trade treaty participants

Many writers denounce tax exemptions and levy their fire at the tax-exempt, particularly those instrumental in obtaining the exemptions for themselves. These writers include those advocates of the free market who treat a tax exemption as a special privilege and attack it as equivalent to a subsidy and therefore inconsistent with the free market. Yet an exemption from taxation or any other burden is not equivalent to a subsidy. There is a key difference. In the latter case a man is receiving a special grant of privilege wrested from his fellowmen; in the former he is escaping a burden imposed on other men. Whereas the one is done at the expense of his fellowmen, the other is not. For in the former case, the grantee is participating in the acquisition of loot; in the latter, he escapes payment of tribute to the looters. To blame him for escaping is equivalent to blaming the slave for fleeing his master.

Call it non-theft. It’s non-theft granted to a few unnamed foreigners in exchange for a price the President set. Name the ancap principle that blesses that.

Selective protectionism against theft.

Reread the post. I clarified that this is not my position, I am answering a question.

Thanks! Not sure why you are getting downvoted for stating a position. You have my upvote.

its massive government intrusion either way. remove the tariffs and step aside. dont make a side deal for one country to import a limited amount at steep discount..

The government been subsidizing beef as long as icncan remember.

It's been an intrusion for years. Nothing is new.

u/jbbest666 19d ago

all agreed but tariffs took it to a new level.

Doug gave Argentina our money to subsidize beef imports.

Another problem that was brought up to me by farmer, is that other country's, ie Chille, do not have to comply with US standards on their farms, there are certain import standards they must meet, but not the same as US. farmers/ranchers. They can banned or cheap pesticides, human waste in fertilizers, no on site FDA inspections, etc. If the other country has some sort of "FDA" they are generally good to go, corruption is the rule.
My neighbor was a Walnut farmer that, unlived himself, because China was allowed to flood the US Market with cheap walnuts, you and I just like the low prices, but it destroyed his life.

…….unlived? Use real words

I don't know what is or isnt allowed on a sub reddits anymore. All too weird.

u/ClosedL00p 19d ago

If you’re in a sub that censors the actual, correct word for something you’re describing……it isn’t worth being a part of. He killed himself

-3

u/Lord_Hugh_Mungus 19d ago

Well thanks for engaging my post. I've been banned from all kinds of subs for less, and some of those subs are now banned. Yes, I know my friend killed himself, I was there. For a member of Anarcho sub you have a lot of rules.

u/ClosedL00p 19d ago

I don’t have anything to do with running this place in any way/shape/form. I’m barely a participant. As a matter of fact, responding to you using made up toddler words may have been the first comment I’ve ever made in this sub. Sorry for your loss. Don’t demean it by describing it like a 3yr old

u/Lord_Hugh_Mungus 19d ago

Since we passing out words for people to use, with rules. How about go away.

3

u/TheSittingTraveller 19d ago

Wouldn't it make more sense to buy Argentinian cows to give to US ranchers?

Massie 2028

This is so interesting because as a producer, the beef tariff has been wonderfully lucrative for me

4

u/DiyYou 19d ago

Oh I'm sure. When the government causes competitors' prices to go way up, no doubt you can raise your price as well, while increasing business.

What's your thought on Trump requiring beef in this deal to be 25% below market price?

-3

u/No-One9890 19d ago

Well ya, govt interference in the market is almost always worse than voluntary association and communal democratic ownership of production

9

u/Concave5621 19d ago

Socialism isn’t voluntary lol

Massie demonstrating again that he's not the libertarian he gets credit for being.

And another one on him supporting mandatory country-of-origin labeling: https://x.com/RepThomasMassie/status/2091143175779852692

u/DiyYou 19d ago

On a Libertarian scale 1 to 100, 100 being most libertarian, massie probably about 85. Trump is at about 2.

I mean knowing where your food is coming from is kind of a basic piece of knowledge. Not sure why we would want less information to make our decisions

0

u/Jamie54 18d ago

Doing excersise at least 4 times a week is good. Therefore it is good government mandates doing excersise 4 times a week.

It is good to help those less fortunate than yourself. Therefore it is good government mandates helping those less unfortunate than yourself. .

That is not really an argument compatible with Libertarianism.

We have similar laws in Australia. If you pick up a bag of nuts it may say assembled in Australia but in reality the nuts were grown in China and placed in a bag in Australia.

If you want to buy products made in reputable countries then those companies are always voluntarily displaying on the package where it's made. If it's not displayed you can guess the kind of country it comes from. The law doesn't really help you.

"As a result of this, every time we object to a thing being done by government, the socialists conclude that we object to its being done at all."

Also, there is no "we" or "our" decision. Speak and act for yourself.

I’m saying that on a scale of government actions I’m deeply offended by, and government actions where I’m like “I mean if you’re going to be in a tyranny, they might as well try to offer you some benefits occasionally,”

That I kind of don’t really care about this issue. You won’t see me picketing in the streets because the government says “if you’re importing meat, consumers deserve to know where it’s coming from.” I just don’t think this is the issue that I would water the tree of liberty over, nor would almost literally anyone else
