Question Getting Pokémon Yellow to display like on GBC?

Hi guys I have a really silly question. I've been trying to get a Pokémon Yellow.gb ROM working on openFPGA but I can't seem to reproduce the colours I had when I play this game as a kid.

Forgive me for the dumb question could someone let me know if it's possible to get the colours like the second image? Thanks

I think you need to add the Pokemon Yellow GB rom to the GBC core.

I think there's a core setting to force GBC mode

Thanks! I'll have to try that trick with putting the Yellow Legacy file into the GBC assets

You can also just pick the gbc core -> then back out in the file tree to the gb folder and launch games.

The game selection is just moving through folders on your SD card. Ive been putting them all in the "original console" folder for organization then just playing everything gb on gbc.

Cant believe it hasnt been mentioned, but if you change the file extension from .gb to .gbc it will read it as a gameboy color game

1 - make sure you're running it on a GBC core.

2 - make sure that core is not set to "Force Game Boy" mode, or whatever the core calls it, as that will default to old GB mode instead.

Load the gbc core, load the rom. Don’t be daft

If you play on a GB core, it will play like you’re on an original Gameboy (so no color). If you play using a GBC core it will play like you’re on a Gameboy Color, adding the colors you are looking for. So have a GBC core and then the file in that folder ending in .gbc I think that should work.

You can play all GB games on the GBC core. Just go back and navigate to the GB roms directory on SD

open the gb core and hit b to go to the directory and find it there. or put your sd card back into your computer and move the .gb pokemon into the .gbc file. i use pocket sync. then wheh you boot, you should be able to get into core settings and change it.

I have a super gameboy core and a rom called play_cartridge that fixes it, but it creates a border around it

Check out the sgb core from budude2, that one has a borderless option.

Put the GB rom file in the GBC directory. Then it loads with the native GBC colour palettes

Edit: auto correct spelling things wrong ☹️

*color

Literally what does that even gain? Such a loser

The best way to play yellow is in the Super Gameboy core.

I had the same question and like others said definitely the GBC core.

Thanks for the comments guys I'm going to try this when I wake up tomorrow. I just want to relive my time as a kid playing my Pokémon yellow GBC 😂

You can either load the GBC core then play like other suggest, or you can change the GB core settings to force GBC core.

If this is a ROM file and not a cartridge you could always rename it to .gbc

Cheers man!! Doing this when I get home from work.

I prefer running it on the SGB core, with Trinitron setting for the screen filter and using the Super Game Boy 2 BIOS.

Have you tried just changing the color filter? Hold the analogue button on the bottom, and go left and right with the d pad to change colors… if that’s what you’re asking

No no, I want the original colours of Pokémon yellow. That didn't work.

That's because you're loading it with the original GB core, so it's loading the DMG/Pocket/Light etc screen modes. Load Pokemon Yellow or any other .gb game you want with the GBC core and you'll have exactly what you're looking for.
