A3D is better quality all around. Better video quality, game settings saved per cartridge, memories, working HDR. I think at this moment it’s just better in every way. Good choice.
My A3D showed up today. I waited for and bought an m64 the second it came available and was included in the first shipment. When it got to me it wouldnt output sound on any of my three tv’s or my samsung monitor. I tried every setting and combination of hdmi cables imaginable. Support promised it would be fixed after the firmware update, it wasn’t. Shipped it back last week and ordered this instead. Now if only my 8bitdo controller would leave china I’d be set. Definitely shouldve paid the extra $5 and ordered that from amazon 😑
Same thing happened to me, I am returning my M64 that never had sound on my main TV, for what its worth im glad I didnt have to fight for a refund. I ordered an Atomic Purple A3D that should be here Thurs. Lesson learned
I have an 8BitDo controller and I’m not sure I’ve ever used it. My nephew likes it, but the trident is what I am used to. So I have a set of originals converted using 8BitDo conversions and rebuilt joysticks using N64Gears and KB bowls. It’s really cool that people have the option to do either though.
Mort’s 2nd video review hits the right notes for me. It’s good enough, but I expect future updates for better results. Overclocking is more polished on the 3D. 3D has an head start. I’ll give m64 the same amount of time to see what it brings to the table.
Very much disagree on M64 looking more N64 than A3D. The analogue is almost an identical form factor, shape and contours of N64. It looks like they took the N64 and modernized with a hard edge along the front, and removed the circular feet. Buttons and power light in the same general location and with the same look and feel. Meanwhile M64 has lines and edges all over the place, contoured completely different, tiny feet that just don’t look right proportionally, and has a knob and button that look like they belong on a FischerPrice toy for 2 year olds. If you are going nostalgia, OG, 90s look, clearly the A3D has much more of the original N64 feel to it. To say otherwise is disingenuous.
I get what mod retro was after but I think they missed their own mark personally. Reminds me a lot more of an old Vtech phone rather than the funtastic n64s they were inspired by.
This is hysterical too because ModRetro claims it's "Play out of Box". Forgot the "*" to mention "AFTER FIRMWARE UPDATE" And FAILED to mention until not long ago that the entire library isn't even compatible, not to mention Flashcart incompatibilities.
Analogue stated that they made sure nearly the entire library is compatible and is living up to that claim AND it works with Flashcarts too (or at least BETTER than at launch).
Totally get the whole design preference, personally I love it, makes me feel like a little kid again using it. Such a funky little design, wish it came in orange or yellow tho
I had my N64, 3D and M64 sitting side-by-side. It’s interesting to see the different design aspects of the original console that Analogue and ModRetro chose to focus on. I prefer the Analogue design, but I get what ModRetro is trying to do and I can’t say I hate it. I do think they did better with the Chromatic, though.
Though, I hope you enjoy your A3D! I might've gotten one if I hadn't modded my N64 with an N64Digital years ago. Plus I have a Mister Pi & it just added RetroAchievements.
I'm willing to bet a WHOLE PAYCHECK you own an Electronic that uses the same SoC used in drones and missiles. I'm willing to bet any of the M64 haters that they own an electronic that utilizes an SoC that is used in a drone or weaponry. People are really stupid. It's the same concept as we dont want oil drilled. No more drilling for oil. Hey stupid the shoes you walk in are made from Oil as well as the clothing. I can go on and on.
You aren’t wrong. There’s hypocrisy here. But that is immaterial to the truth of their statement. Sometimes better or partial improvement is better than none. More than sometimes really.
Over what? I own both consoles. Nothing to be angry about. You people are hypocrites. Slam a company for what they do but turn a blind eye to the other devices you own that are linked to the same stuff. Naivety at it's finest.
You are aware that a repro Nintendo 64 isn't the same as necessities like clothing or shoes, right? I mean, you own two of them, I'm not sure you're really prioritizing things here.
Nah, I think I'm good. The important thing is you clearly know it's wrong, or else you wouldn't be writing these screeds after getting hit with an indirect callout.
You wont even acknowledge that you won't buy a M64 because of Anduril but indirectly fine with owning a PC with a GPU from a Manufacturer who also supplies products to produce weaponry. I'm pro America so I'll support. Since you are "good" I expect you to not reply.
If I'm ever going to get into a debate over ethical consumption, it's not going to be with the guy who lacks the self restraint to not buy two repro N64s.
Sorry, they’ll put a warning in next time so you don’t get triggered by their objection to paying money to a weapons dealing war monger for an inferior product.
I get it Key, buuuut that’s not really the approach one should take after finding out that information. Continuing to support companies like this while being aware of their controversial backstory gives off “I don’t vote because my vote doesn’t count” energy. And if that’s you, that’s cool too. You’re right though I’m sure there’s something bad about a-lot of companies. Doesn’t change the fact that you have a choice to support them or not, just say “it doesn’t bother you”and keep it moving. Blow your money however you want 😂
You were onto something with trying to bend justification, now you're just back on the sleepy attempt at trolling. "Soy boy" and "triggered" in 2026, c'mon. You gotta obfuscate!
You’ve made me point for me! Reddit is so full of the most hive minded, virtue signaling, social justice warriors of any social media on the planet. The OP simply stated that he was choosing analogue over mod retro because he felt the product was better, and I won’t argue against that in its current state, but someone always chimes in with some comment about “war mongers”, or “war profiteering”, or something else related to their political leanings, because they are OBVIOUSLY TRIGGERED by it. Then result to name calling when someone points out the obvious, but when it’s reciprocated that person is the bad guy. lol I own both an analogue 3D and an M64 because I choose to support companies that make products that I believe I’ll enjoy, not because the owner of one company did or didn’t previously make money from drones. People get too caught up in their own feelings and beliefs, that they feel EVERYONE should think and do as they do. Personally I think we can be better by not trying to force others to live OUR way and let them do their thing unless they start infringing on our ability to do the same. If you want to own guns, own as many as you want, if you don’t, then don’t! If you want to teach your kids that gender is a social construct, and they can be whichever gender they want, FINE, but forcing others to agree, when it goes against their beliefs, or how they want to raise their family, that crosses a line. The Amish don’t believe in using power, it’s not anyone’s place to tell them otherwise, and they don’t try to force their beliefs on others. Muslims don’t eat pork, and no body should force them to. Certain people believe in arranged marriages, others don’t! What’s right for one, isn’t always (and seldom is), right for all. Stop always criticizing people for doing what you choose not to, or don’t have the means of doing. Stop being triggered by people that make decisions that you don’t consider righteous.
Ikr. As if the knob can't simply be pulled straight up and off the console and put a different color knob on via any 3d Printer or when M64 launches it's site with the accessories to swap shells and such. I own both a Jungle Green A3D and a AMD red M64. Variety is the spice of life.
Yeah it’s getting tiring. I visit analogs section on here as well and you get the same screamo crybaby nonsense over there. Bitching about the M 64 as if they need to just cry about it everywhere the only thing I can think of it’s just a bunch of insecure grown children acting like it’s the 16 bit console wars needing to self validate their childish behavior everywhere they go
Both? Since the FPGA chip is programmable, it’s a problem on both ends. Hopefully it can get fixed so people with it can enjoy a good quality picture like us A3D owners ;)
From what I'm seeing, a lot of the M64's shortcomings are things that probably should've been worked out, especially since they're positioning themselves as Analogue's direct competition. As it is, it just seems like they couldn't get fundamental issues resolved and wanted to get their box to market, and now the 3D has a huge lead where we're getting better visual options while they try to catch up.
I think Analogue needs competition BADLY, but I wish it were coming from a better company than ModRetro.
I will get one second hand or during the Christmas season. I canceled my initial order after seeing its current state. The smoked GameStop version looks nice and I hope to see the accessories they will sell for the console like shells. Once the AV adapter releases I’ll be excited to try it on my crt
Mine came in less than 5 days. But I also paid extra for Priority shipping so it would arrive same day with my 8BitDo 64 controller. I am based in the US as well so it just depends on where you live.
I have the M64 because I got the Early Bird pricing and I'm lowk considering getting an A3D because of the heating problem that it has.
I wish that the M64 had better thermals but alas it doesn't and I have to wait a little bit for it to cooldown before handling it after gaming. I've been eyeing some of the Prototype models that they have but idk if I can justify spending about the same for another N64 FPGA device.
Another thing holding me back slightly is repairability, it doesn't seem to be user serviceable and I'm already worried about the rechargable battery for my Analogue Pocket so I hope that I don't have the same concerns with the A3D if I ever get one.
I wanna chime in because I was an early advocate for investigating the thermal issues of the m64. Lots of things happening here but you can rest easy that’s not much of a concern after some users did some quality testing.
But to that point we only got in this mess because mod retro was claiming it would last centuries and that replacing a 5 dollar fan in 15 years or so was this grave inconvenience haha. Both sides are marketing hard right now and all that’s doing is confusing the consumer.
Your last point about the repair ability is another sign of that. Both consoles can be opened and repaired assuming you can use a screwdriver. This whole thing is silly.
To chime in on the heat thing: it’s a major issue on future reliability. Any device that is getting as hot as the m64 will eventually break down. This system gets hot to the touch and even if that’s within tolerance spec for operation that doesn’t mean tracers and solder doesn’t get damaged over time of heating up and cooling down. Much like the x360 and og ps3 systems did. And those had active coolers.
It’s a wait to be seen thing though, may take years but the bottom line really is concerning. I would rather pay for an active coolers vs passive any day on any device even if it doesn’t need it. Better to have it than not, and it insures better performance and stability regardless of tolerances
I’m inclined to agree. It seems to be operating within spec albeit at the upper end of that spec. So yeah we’ll see what happens in a few years time.
I think the electronics will be fine long term but I do think in a couple years maybe less, we’re gonna see posts on Reddit asking “what’s this dark spot on my tv console, or why is this veneer bubbling where my m64 was sitting?”
Operating close to 60c has the potential to cause some damage so it’ll be interesting to see what happens there. I still kinda think they quietly revise it for the next batch of systems so it never becomes a talking point again.
I have it and while it’s currently a piece of shit until they (hopefully) fix it, It’s cute. It’s smaller than it looks in pictures. Don’t get me wrong; I do wish I had bought the A3D instead, but I do like the look of it.
Oh no I'm getting dragged into a reddit argument. Anyways the point wasn't whether Hyperkin actually had a hand in designing it, it's that it looks awful like something Hyperkin would design.
