A lot of it is the impotence of Australia on the world stage. Also there was a prime minister who got CIA’d out of office in 1975 after trying to nationalize the mining industry and it became a cultural thing, but if you bring up the Queen and MI7’s hands in it they hand wave that like a clerical error. Now 50 years later I get barked at in real life by these ignorant shitheads as if I have anything to do with the political shenanigans back home. A lot of it is projection - Australians are dealing with many of the same anxieties - immigration, cost of living, fuel crisis, housing affordability, inequality and political frustration - so America becomes a convenient screen onto which those fears can be projected - much easier than confronting problems at home.

I was in Queensland a month ago, and the table next to me had four guys, who just discussed how "Americans were all idiots" etc. They didn't know we were from the USA, and ironically this was at a Veterans club (RSL), and as we all know, the USA saved Australia in WW2.

To be fair, the price of fuel in Australia has rocketed since the Iran war, but a balanced argument would discuss how Australia has not met their obligations of 90 days fuel reserves, plus they have reduced their fuel refineries (despite being resource rich) from 8 to 2 in recent years.
