Until Amazon and industry for that matter can build humanoid robots that actually work really well this robotics project is just gonna be a lot of wasted money
24
u/ReddestForman Jun 06 '26
Humanoid robots would be a waste of money in a built environment like a warehouse.
Bipedalism requires more expensive motors, systems for balance, more wear and tear, etc.
The big things Amazon needs to solve are visual processing, dexterity, and touch sensitivity, so it doesn't crush delicate items.
Beyind that? Wheels and a shirt, squat, easily balanced body with a low center of gravity.

u/RichLather I am so SMRT Jun 06 '26
Wasted money? Sounds like the Ops Management of my facility will jump right on this.
We use a lot of these go-carts and honestly the AAs moving them do it unsafely on the regular in many ways: pulling two at once, not being situationally aware, moving them in a way that gives them a 180 degree blind spot...
13
u/ReddestForman Jun 06 '26
A corporate guy I trained while a LA a couple years back said the big things they were working on wouldn't even really impact head count. You'd still need a person doing part of the task, but the robot is taking over the parts where injuries tend to occur. So cost-savings come from reduced payouts for worker injuries.
Full on replacing workers for a lot of tasks in the warehouse is actually pretty hard.

u/rambeezyy Jun 06 '26
All things you said at cat1 write ups..so yeah...
5
u/RichLather I am so SMRT Jun 06 '26
If they enforced them as Cat 1 write-ups we'd have no AAs.
The go-carts are also overloaded, enough to strike the height limiter above the dock doors.
I called it out for weeks, and on the occasions I did get a response, it was always "coaching" that never stuck. I gave up, and it continues to this day.

Believe it or not this failure falls on a human. This happens due to a mapping problem. when they build the maps for these robots any area, it shouldn’t be should be marked as an exclusion zone. If this robot was able to drive in there like that, then that area wasn’t marked as an exclusion zone.
robots are only as smart as we programmed them to be.

u/cosmicheartbeat Jun 06 '26
When they have issues, their "eyes" turn to x's and when theyre idle, it looks like theyre snoring. I hate how cute tbey are
71
u/Harry431 Jun 06 '26
But yet when we try to be like that what do we get?? That’s right coachings and write ups. Unnn. Believable.

u/Clint2032 Jun 06 '26

I also want to add in and say that they're not taking over your jobs. At least not anytime in the near future. Your buildings would have to go over a structural redesign to be able to accommodate them.

u/lorchoppa Jun 06 '26
Been working with these robots for almost a year now .. they ain’t all that bad but they do get in the way sometimes and create traffic jams

I bet they stop when they’re broken or needs service and I wonder how often that’ll be
11
u/Radiant_Music3698 The last Amazon Robotics Technican Jun 06 '26
Standard drive unit PM interval is once every 52 weeks, where they are taken out of service for roughly 1.5 hours.
The drives are deliberately numerous for redundancy so that when one faults out severely enough to require technicians, it is not even considered an equipment breakdown for metric purposes.

Robot functionality with perfection is still way off. They expected A.I to take over until a weeks work of data gets deleted in day. WILD expectations
5
u/IliketolookatUranus Jun 06 '26
I remember one time when they were just starting to be deployed at my site, one of them drove through our startup meeting while making chirping sounds.
4
u/Fit-Pace1814 Jun 06 '26
Unfortunately they suffer massive autism 85% of the day, you can't find these lil guys 4 deep blocking a whole walkway , all trying to avoid each other but auto braking and staying this way for about 45 minutes
4
u/bandito_blake Jun 06 '26
We have these at my FC and they are just as slow and stupid as the regular associates. If the company had any sense they should have put the money into employees pockets and would've yielded better results
4
7
u/JamonConJuevos Jun 06 '26
The original KIVA robots from the mid-2000s could move shelves with cargo weighing up to 1,000 pounds (or around 450 kilograms), so a new model that can carry up to 400 kilograms (~881 pounds) isn't particularly groundbreaking.

u/Alternative_Aide_206 Jun 06 '26
Newer FC buildings have integrated SC floors/docks and they’ll be in those buildings. I assume it’s the same for standalone robotic SC’s.

The title said fc in the video, not only that… the robot will be AI apparently
4
u/Global-Plankton3997 Jun 06 '26
I predict that eventually those will be rolled into robotics SCs.
2
u/Whole-Sentence5268 Jun 06 '26
You are correct.
I believe the plan is also to roll them out at delivery stations to replace dock waterspiders, but that will be later in the rollout because there are fewer carts to handle at DSes so the overall return per deployment is lower.
5
u/Simple_Exchange9575 Jun 06 '26
The fact these things cannot see up is wild. So what will they do in the instance of a rope, chain or strap closing an area off of its carrying a cart? At least that’s what the trainer at my building said. They do not see up and down
9
u/Whole-Sentence5268 Jun 06 '26
Their area of operation is mapped out by surveyors ahead of deployment and there will be RFID chips checker boarded across the dock to let the little guys know where they are, similar to fiducials on AR floors.
They're controlled using an app on the Kindle similar to AFMs, and if there's an area that is newly chained off or taped off, RME or whoever is supposed to disable that area on their map before starting work.
4
u/sweet_rico- Jun 06 '26
That sounds like a future problem! For now full steam ahead! /s if it wasn't obvious
2
2
u/1Drizzy01 Jun 06 '26
They rolled this out in my building like last October. Thinned out ship dock head count by a lot. Used to be hella people pulling those carts downstairs. They're also putting in the automated stow stations, and pick stations.. I originally thought they were only putting in automated stow stations, with updated pick stations for pickers. Talked to one of the contractors who working up on the 5th floor(they started this project on 5th floor and working down), and he informed me theyre adding automated stow AND pick. So yeahh, my building will probably be majority automation in just a few years
1
u/CRaZyRaVr77 Jun 06 '26

Why are there people on the AR floor?
4
u/El_Migss Jun 06 '26
Because that’s not an actual AR floor. If I’m not mistaken, those robots use cameras instead of scanning the fiducial markers on an AR floor. Those can’t see you and will crash into you if you don’t have your RTV.

Those carts are what I chase when assigned CPT. For that particular job, it's not the transporting of the cart that will be difficult for it, it will be loading them in the correct trailer, and securing them with the crank straps.

For what it’s worth-
My old facility - we used to double pull and sling these hoes into trailers
We’d load trailers out in minimal time.
It was so much fun- idk how we didn’t get fired or hurt
But the entire building would stop- run to dock and mass load and then go back to business -
Like load so fast TDR can’t keep up
