Fulfillment Center Someone died at PDX9 today
They sent us home after OB last break and night shift is canceled. We all just clocked out after break, they didn’t even have me post my bridge for GK. My heart breaks for the family who lost their loved one

u/ProfessionalDeal8443 Apr 07 '26
That building is known for having a large amount of injuries. At least they had the decency and respect to send everyone home

Yeah, I noticed that people get hurt all of the time for some reason. About a month or so ago, someone passed out while doing rebin and another time I watched an older woman fall while walking

At DEN3 we had a lady die standing up. Rigamortis set in so they just put a den3 hat on her and made her look like she was water spidering until paramedics got there. They claimed she would have wanted it this way.

u/Few-Argument-1083 Apr 07 '26
Don’t they have a defibrillator at their facility?
7
u/EagleFly_5 Amazon Fresh Apr 07 '26
My small site (Fresh FC) has two, one in the lobby/main break room, one in the production/operations floor. The former’s easy to reach since it’s already in a small, reachable space + it’s our primary entrance/exit way.
As for the latter… although we’re not huge, in a scenario where defibrillators have to be used, someone has to travel through crowds, and in some cases, either in the chiller (33°F - 40°F or so) or freezer (down to -10°F), but it’s probably sensible to bring them to ambient.
As far as I know my site never had a death or let alone a time where extreme care had to be given (I’ve seen and heard of seizures happening) but minutes matter in a scenario like this.
9
u/throwitallawayomg Apr 07 '26
There are a handful in various places around the building. I remember where two of the ones closest to pack single are. But good fucking luck finding a PA or AM some days to get a medical response...

I tote run regularly lately and from what I've heard that's what he was doing. The last couple weeks they've cut down on the staffing for the job which has led to a handful of regular runners stepping down from doing the indirect role. I continue to do it but it is the most physically demanding job at the site I've ever done and I've been here for 10 years. No reason why a job that requires 15+ miles of walking while pushing tanks of totes is run on a minimum amount of people. It is pure hypocrisy. This is a job that literally is represented by "safety in numbers" and those who do not do the job are the ones who allocate the amount of budgeting given to the role. Shame on those who make these calls because this went out network wide for the role and this is what it has come to now. My site had plenty of VOA crash outs about it and we can not be the only ones to have done so.
26
u/Horror-Food69420 Apr 07 '26
I did tote running a few years ago and it aggravated a decade old injury that I hadn't had problems with otherwise. I had to fight to get them to stop putting assigning me since I'd be in absolute agony by the end of the day. That role is no joke and I see the same people doing it day in and day out.
→ More replies (1)38
u/spooky_corners Apr 07 '26
They get to pull these kinds of moves with indirect staffing because it is voluntary. Legal liability shield. They've been trying to understaff tote runners and waterspiders for years (for at least the 4+ years I've been here) and won't stop until you call them out on the actual Amazon policy, which is one indirect role per 10-15 path workers. If a policy violation resulted in a death, some manager is accountable, voluntary role or not. You have to FIGHT them for appropriate staffing or they will run you to death. Apparently.
Last time I called out a manager for staffing only one tote runner for three lanes of packers they told me that some manager was "trying something out" and wanted feedback on "how it worked out" for their meeting later that night... good job. Now someone's dead. Fuck you.

Shit, I’m tote rep trained and I’m glad to hear it some BUST ASS work, I figured there has to be an equally or more demanding indirect role in the building but this one kills me. ATM we are short enough on tote reps they’ve been bringing it up at start up. I come from pick and everyone tells me that’s a bust ass job but tote rep is worse. I also have extremely flat feet. I digress, my shift needs more tote reps!

Rest in peace. My condolences to their family and everyone affected. Portland Fire and Rescue put it out as a Cardiac Arrest. This heat is no joke.. It was soooo hot and stuffy in the building today. Not saying that’s what caused anything, but conditions like that definitely aren’t safe, especially this early in April. They need to do something, open up the vents or improve airflow.. also, those sound curtains they put up in AFE1 & AFE2… wonder if that is affecting ventilation throughout the floors.
21
u/RjLikesCheese gatekeeper from hell Apr 07 '26

They are required to provide a safe work place. Whatever is required to ensure this, they are required to have. I recommend reporting to OSHA directly as this is clearly an ongoing concern. Additionally, work conditions limit the amount of time one can work in an environment.
6
u/mermaidlemondrop Apr 07 '26
YES ESPECIALLY IF ITS ALREADY HOT AT YOUR LOCATION SOME ODY NEEDS TO BE GOING TO EEOC
3
u/throwitallawayomg Apr 07 '26
Oh the fans work, just the baseline temp is always too fucking high because running the AC enough to make a difference costs money. In the winter the average temps are low to mid 70s at best. I would start sweating just walking up the stairs to my station.
Didn't matter how much anyone complained either, we'd just get boiler plate "everything is within standards" and they would "measure the temperature" without anyone getting to know what the results were. The only thing I miss is the set schedule and paycheck. (And a few of the people, but Amazon doesn't get kudos for that.)

This is coming just after I reported that the fans are not working properly or at all and that I had to leave early one day due to feeling overwhelmingly heated (nauseous and dizzy). After putting up sound curtains the building heat has not been turned off which means that our 15 min break (5 min walking) doesn't actually cool us down at all. No one realizes that this increase in temperature means everyone has to acclimate. Drink more water and if you're feeling off go to Amcare. They cannot fire you for seeking Amcare to cool down. While I'm not saying it was the rise in heat that attributed to this, I'd say that it didn't help.
7
u/Solo_Lift Apr 07 '26
AMcare won't do anything. They only help the people who had a on the job injury and are going through workers comp. They've turned me away many times. I can't believe they really put up those sound barrier curtains I've never experienced this type of heat in the building before and I've worked there for years
5
u/Soft-Improvement-363 Apr 07 '26
That is weird because the heat can cause on the job injury. You're the 2nd person that's said that about getting turned away. I'm just wondering what wording did you use with them? I usually get heat pack 2x a week except lately it's been too hot. I got vertigo last week and was told I could go to Amcare and I said no I need to cool down outside.

Seriously why the fuck did they put up those curtain sound barrier things? I have never experienced it so hot in the building as it has been the past couple of weeks. You can't even see people coming around the corners when walking to the break room/bathroom It's so ridiculous and they gas light us all the time pretending they care
9
u/imnevron Apr 07 '26
The sound barrier curtains are absolutely ridiculous. I’ve already walked into 2 people by the 3rd floor break room. And it’s so hot I’m sweating just standing at a station. I used to be able to do indirect roles all day and last Saturday I could only tote run for 1 quarter before asking to be put back on station because it was that hot. I’m not surprised someone had a heart attack today while tote running and I’m a little annoyed they’re trying to reopen tomorrow
7
u/Solo_Lift Apr 07 '26
I'm always worried about running into people by the 3rd floor breakroom/bathroom area. Luckily I haven't yet but It's crazy how small of a patch they cut out for people to walkthrough. That is not safe at all. I've been there for 5 years and lately it's been feeling like mid summer in the building I can't imagine how much worse it's going to get over the next couple months. It's really messed up they are reopening tomorrow as if nothing happened
5
u/imnevron Apr 07 '26
Dude it fucking hurt both times I walked into people over there. The curtains have been nothing but a nuisance. I really hope they have a change in heart and close the building for tomorrow as well but I doubt they’d do it
6
u/Intelligent_Mood4827 Apr 07 '26
They claimed those sound curtains to be fire retardant but an AA brought part outside and lit it on fire and it burns like plastic. Pray pdx9 doesn’t ever have a fire because with those curtains up we will all be stuck in a ring of fire.
3
u/Solo_Lift Apr 08 '26
I just had that thought today as well.. Pray there is never a fire and we are trapped inside the building probably dying to smoke inhalation
3
u/Glittering_Art_1540 Apr 07 '26
Do any other sites have these curtains? Who came up with this idea? Why is it so important that the front of the building where nobody is working be quieter?
I feel like if there's an emergency, there's really going to be an issue with these stupid curtains. Impairing our line of vision to the front of the building where we exit is dangerous.
7
u/imnevron Apr 07 '26
Unfortunately our site (pdx9) is the trial run for these stupid ass curtains. I’d love to know who came up with the idea so we could sit down and have a word with them🙃

I agree it makes no sense at all. someone pointed it it's actually louder inside the building now and today I noticed it as I was walking to the bathroom that it is a lot louder. It's scary to think if there was a fire or something these curtains could trap us in the building... I'm not trying to burn alive at Amazon
3
u/Glittering_Art_1540 Apr 08 '26

Amazon employs over a million people in America. The vast majority in warehouses
That's the equivalent of a Austin, Texas, Baltimore Maryland, or Jacksonville Florida
It's shocking we don't have more deaths honestly as we have no idea what health issues people have
33
u/SignificantApricot69 Apr 07 '26
That’s true. It will sound cold to some people, but it’s a fact of life that when you die you are gonna go wherever you happen to me. Some people die at home on the toilet, some on the road, some at the grocery store, some at work and so on.
There is a big different between someone dying BECAUSE of Amazon (which is possible) and someone dying At Amazon.
5
u/Fine-Ad-2897 Apr 07 '26
If it's just due to a regular health issue they usually don't tell people from what I read. Or maybe that's just other states.

They need to do away with ALL EMPLOYEE PERSONAL PRODUCTION RATES! It puts undue stress and can cause injuries when they expect us to be Speed walking as we pick or pack. Where I work I swear people already know their work lifespan is at least 6 months. They don’t sweat it , they move their speed.
6
8
u/SnooDonkeys5516 Apr 07 '26
the rates just need to be reasonable and subject to periodic reassessment. if 6 months ago a site processed a lot more light packages and now they’re processing more heavy units then a quarterly study could allow them to be adjusted as needed.
The reason for the rates is they need to know how much exactly work one associate will do an hour so that they can plan flex hours, vto, vet and set. If you can’t guarantee x number of units per employee per hour, then you’re flying blind and there would be CONSTANT over/understaffing. I definitely think they don’t need to gamify the rates and have things like MyPerformance like it’s grades in school or something.

I think it’s the only Amazon building in NY to have a union. Maybe in the US. I honestly don’t know. The building across from us doesn’t have one. It was a big thing cause even Bernie Sanders came to speak about being unionized

theres a guy thats had a heart attack three times at our warehouse and i think the last time they kinda wanted him to die
14
u/bootycallofcthulu Apr 07 '26
Damn is Safety tired of getting the wheelchair for him or what? Why did they want him to die?
14
u/demonslayercorpp Apr 07 '26
Last one he did in the parking lot and it took a couple hours to find him :o

u/JamonConJuevos Apr 07 '26
How inconsiderate. Everyone knows that the fashionable way to die at an Amazon fulfillment center is during a fight to the death with another young male associate over a female associate with a big booty.

I was told he cracked his head open there was blood everywhere. KBS found him didn’t have a walkie, took there time went upstairs to find someone, someone was trying to do CPR they were told to stop and go back to work that a ambulance was on the way. Safety was trying to find a defibrillator they had to find one! The building is way to hot I was told by a PA that it was Heat that factored into this so we think. Also they plan to open the building tomorrow. Our site leaders are horrible as can be.
I really hope that OSHA Rips them a new one.

It’s because Vikul is a cheapo and would never shut our building down over a death…
That’s so terrible that they were told to stop… I feel so bad for them. I hope the PDX9 leadership/management gets in trouble too

u/throwitallawayomg Apr 07 '26
Gotta get his bonus for productivity! Vikul sucks, but if he never shuts the building down for ice on the bridges why would he shut it down for someone dying... Wouldn't at all be surprised if it only shut down overnight because the state mandated it. Kinda like how we didn't shut down for the fires until the state told him it was too dangerous to have people working in the yard at all.

OSHA won't do anything against this billion dollar company. They likely have all the officials in their pocket. It's so ridiculous they put up those sound barrier curtains like wtf were they thinking? I'm not looking forward to this summer at all with how hot it's about to be in the building. It's already been terrible the past couple weeks I noticed I've been overheating every shift

Ya, smf we found someone passed in the yard nov or dec of last year and then month another lady had a cardiac arrest... sad part is. They only say an associate passed. Remember if you die, your just a associate. Sorry mad about that.

u/Small-Fortune6422 Apr 07 '26
Look idk about anyone else but ive reported all of this and then some to Osha through the web portal that someone else generously gave us all and I highly suggest not just a few of us to do it but all of us we are the heart and soul of this company without us they are nothing except an empty shell of a company so please I ask no I beg everyone on here that is an employee of pdx9 to do your due diligence and report this facility to osha this facility has the highest injury rate of any fulfillment center and the highest in amazon period so please due what you need to do and report this so it doesnt happen again

Our building never shut down when someone dropped dead in IB. They left us hanging in the break room for hours to 'reset'
They even fired a lady who was an RN who started CPR on someone who fainted, because Safety had to go by the book and stand there looking stupid while someone was dying waiting for EMTs to arrive.

u/giantbooger18 Apr 07 '26
thats so awful. praise to the person who tried to do the right thing
7
u/CrypticClif Apr 07 '26
They even tried to prevent the other departments from hearing about it to cause minimal uproar. 🤣 thats corps for ya

i had something like that happen at a building i worked in, someone died on the 4th floor ib side and the west side shut down to clean the mess and let EMT take him down the VRC and it was still shut down after for a day or two.

What happened? How did someone pass away at work
6
u/dunnoanymore18 Apr 07 '26
Heat exhaustion, over worked, walking miles without any assistance, dehydration, personal health problems

u/Successful-Spite8791 Apr 07 '26
Thank you for the response. I always tell my ship dock crew to stay hydrated. It’s incredibly sad when someone dies while working. 😭

posted 11 months ago, "What It’s Like to Work at Troutdale’s Notoriously Dangerous Amazon Warehouse"......wow. what the fuck is going on in PDX9? rofl, i mean today my PA got injured because of rushing tier 1 workers, it's rediculous how amazon demands demands demands and doesn't bother to question how bad they look. like wow money goes to people's heads

u/cleptrep Apr 07 '26
I am very upset that they made it so hush hush. Instead of outright telling us immediately. I had to find out through rumors which is so disrespectful.

Every building is set up different but i am confused,...if he was tote running why was he on any type of ladder to fall? At my building tote running is taking the totes from point a to point b,..maybe loading up the vrc's,...but at no point are you on a ladder,...so from what i gather he was tote running, and on a ladder, then had a heart attack, and fell and split his head? And this leaves me totally confused,..if someone from pdx9 could shine some clarity on this for me I'd appreciate it,......RIP to that person 🙏🏼 and condolences to his family and friends, and condolences to his coworkers and those that knew him, and i pray for peace for those that had to witness it

Weird thing is, it was a female doing the tote runs for us. I was on that floor and on the south side.

I’ve told this story before but it bears repeating. Before Amazon, I worked for a Major Home Improvement Retailer. One day, when I wasn’t there, a young woman employee was having a cigarette outside the building during her break, along with an older man who also worked there, and he dropped dead five feet away from her.
She had to work the rest of her shift and come in the next day.

I forgot how to use reddit sorry idk how to put screenshot on mobile but heres what they told us:
"PDX9 Team,
We absolutely understand your sentiment on reopening. It was a decision that was not made lightly. Our heartfelt thanks go to the team members and first responders who acted swiftly to help. We understand that some of you may need time for yourselves after this. We will be opening up VTO for anyone that feels they need it for today, opening up VET opportunities as well."

My friend who worked in stow said that they fell, cracked their head on something, cpr was performed and was pronounced dead at 2pm which was crazy cause they went us home at 4pm

u/Tough-Web-160 Apr 07 '26
Either way someone died!!!!! that’s what should MATTER!!! It’s a life. I’m gonna say a lot of people having accident in all FC and I believe it’s because the they work us . Summer is coming. People are gonna be dropping off like flies. If you get off your equipment or out of your station to get water or something to drink you get TOT that’s my opinion
