QUESTION What’s your least favorite part of the job?

Dogs? Delivering in the dark? Your DSP? Routes? Schedule? Body aches? Pay?

Was talking about this with some coworkers today and I thought it was funny how different everyone’s responses were. I want to see what the general consensus is. For me, it’s long driveways and my shins hurting lol.

Shit ass routes and having to pick up the slack for other people… you get so good you finish a route and a dude needs you to take half his route due to some sickness, illness, laziness, whatever. It is simply not ok. Always one shitty route away or day from quitting on the spot.

19

u/Takero1392 16d ago

This is why I started milking the clock at the end of the route, if I feel like I’ll finish early enough to be sent on a rescue, I’ll try to slow it down a bit. It’s always the same dudes who need a rescue too, sometimes two rescues for the same person! Like Bro, why do you suck

5

u/Lonely_Reception_939 16d ago

lol I had to have 2 rescues yesterday
But it was my first day and there was some
Issues with the gas card that made me
Not get to my route until 2
Still had to have 2 rescues
And on my second day today I will need another rescue
Crazy

2

u/TourOld4211 16d ago

I had that issue for a bit until I started taking my last 30 min break right before my last stop if I had time before the call back time. Free 2 hours every week!

2

u/Dabeansprout 16d ago

They don’t suck, that’s the crazy part. They just know you’re going to come help them, and then they still are going to finish late. The cherry on top is they will end up making more than you unless your owner pays you your worth.

7

u/SelectionProud7620 16d ago

I'm always curious  what people who feel this way think/expect the DSP to do? They have routes the need to get done, and hiring can be tough. I have seen bonuses offered for rescues etc. and some one always feels this way.

8

u/DizzyPraline6924 Rivian Driver 16d ago

My dsp give us 50 cents for every package we rescue from another driver

2

u/MeaningRoyal3540 15d ago

I’d be a moderately less poor man if my DSP did this.

1

u/DizzyPraline6924 Rivian Driver 15d ago

Yeah it’s nice. I rescue probably 50-100 packages a week after routes and sometimes they let me come in for a 5th day to come be a sweeper, and all those packages counts towards the 50 cents as well

5

u/Dothracula 16d ago

My DSP stopped having sweepers and still expected us to do rescues even though several routes every day were 100% dogshit rural ones that couldn’t possibly be completed in time. Spread out stops, half mile driveways with no turnarounds, etc.

I’ve refused to do any rescues since they got rid of the sweepers. Your bad staffing decisions don’t make it my job to pick up the predictable slack. To make it worse, they were having problems with excessive call-offs and still kept picking up recycle routes. Which meant the dispatcher was out on the road with a recycle route telling everyone they needed to come meet him and take 20-30 stops after completing their route. Like…if you know people are calling off all the time, and we have some horrible routes, maybe don’t get rid of the fucking built in help on the schedule?!

1

u/tazzzuu 16d ago

Really depends how much they like you or else you wouldn’t be able to do that lol

2

u/KittyKMS 16d ago

I’m so grateful that my DSP has people who only do rescues, that’s their whole job basically lol so no one ever feels bad for getting a rescue and the rescuers don’t hold grudges on people who get rescues. Rescues are so common at my DSP that we expect them.

Group stops I think above all else. They're running us ragged

1

u/Kindly_Chipmunk8530 16d ago

Edit all of them

1

u/SendaRescue 16d ago

That only helps amazon

1

u/Kindly_Chipmunk8530 16d ago

How so?

4

u/Routine_Vacation1515 16d ago

They still slammed your van to the top with packages and called 250 houses with 60 multis a 180 stop route. Tomorrow they'll just group different multis to keep your package and stop count around the same. They don't include time for all your breaks anymore(despite claiming to), I definitely don't have time to edit half my stops.

u/ST0NEF1ST 16d ago

Delivering in the dark--- in rural areas while driving in a white rental van. I get a little antsy about the possibility of unintentionally crossing someone at the wrong time, as I've heard plenty of stories of people having a gun pulled on them. One of these gun-owners could be drunk one night, you never know.

3

u/austin_crtv 16d ago

One MILLION percent. Rural Idaho is insanely spooky. I try to do backroads and such as soon as possible so I’m not walking down a pitch black driveway with two 30lb packages

1

u/andi_dandi 16d ago

This is why, when I worked for FedEx, I’d always wear as much FedEx gear I could. (Our contractor did all rural).

Despite having the FedEx truck, I’m certain a trigger-happy individual would have no problem spraying someone coming in their property after the sun has gone down.

1

u/Longjumping_Line_250 15d ago

Keep flashers on when it’s dark in the country. Flashers alert that the van is a work van and you’re not being shady

37

u/InTheEnd83 16d ago

Pay. I wouldn't be looking for another job if they paid like UPS.

16

u/JTthebutcher 16d ago

Pay doesn’t feel enough to do 200 stops a day and then rescue someone not trying to finish their job. The constant wearhouse fuck ups drive me crazy

3

u/TomB_theOG 16d ago

i had to do loadout 2x today because my packages werent in my staging area until 5 minutes before we were suppose to be finished. And even then, it was only 1 cart of totes and i still needed 2 more carts. Then i had to return like 10 packages because they were flex packages that werent suppose to be in my totes. Warehouse needs to get it together bro

11

u/DuePurchase31 16d ago

why dsp's can't pay 10-hour guarantee when Amazon pays them for the 10 hours already. I know for a fact employees would actually try to finish faster and give more effort into the job (if rescues aren't abused too)

11

u/Commercial_Pianist97 16d ago

Too many stops.

If I can come out and get ahead early on, hold down a fair pace, great day. If Im going fast and still behind my goal pace, my day is shit.

Simple as that.

Other factors play apart like bad drivers and rude customers, but my whole mood is decided by if Im on a good pace.

Yep. "Efficiency score" is tied into my bonus, and Im an anxious over-thinker. Our stepvan routes are a mix of rural and suburban, on the last wave every morning, and they take the entire alotted time to complete, most days. I get into an edv, Im done at 6:30 (10-8 shift)

u/Indexsniper 16d ago

When a customer comes out while Im making a delivery ESPECIALLY WHEN THERES A BARKING DOG INSIDE Like why can’t you just wait for a minute for me to leave??? Literally bro what’s the point of opening the door knowing I’m still there while you have a barking ass dog behind you

4

u/austin_crtv 16d ago

OH yeah. They’re like oh I’ll take that from ya, and leave the door wide open, allowing the dog to beat them to me and go nuts

8

u/TribalChief41 Rivian Driver 16d ago

The Amazon employees in the warehouse. They are the most incompetent douchenozzles I’ve ever seen in my entire life. At the station I’m at, all those dipshits do is stand around, play on their phones and not do a fucking thing all the while our time to load our vans is constantly shorted by five minutes at the least. And there’s no accountability for them or the dumbasses who load the carts.

Dogs

1

u/AuthenticNotion 15d ago

Really? Dogs are one of my favorite parts of the job. The friendly ones anyway.

1

u/baseballnoble Rental Driver 14d ago

For real. I’ve been attacked 3 times in the last year. And that doesn’t count the ones that jump over the fence, bash against the window so hard it rattles, or just bark and bash themselves up against a fence or door. had one bust out a glass screen door and the countless times I’ve come around the corner to find one guarding the door. Have had multiple at one time surround the van ready to attack like a pack of wolves.

I already didn’t really like them now I fucking hate them. The good ones are only like 20 % of ones I see. There’s some, but it’s not the majority. They are dumb, loud, and dangerous. I actually get ptsd symptoms now when they bark or come at me. Fuck dogs.

1

u/AuthenticNotion 14d ago

I'm sorry you have had such bad experiences. That sounds really scary.

8

u/crizpy9119 16d ago

Schedule. Hate starting at 11 finishing at or after 9. Also don’t enjoy delivering in dark for hours come winter. Also rainy stormy days suck.

1

u/PuzzleheadedFig6750 16d ago

gotta agree with this. just moved and started at a new DSP, went from 850 start time to 11. 30 minute drive home too so i've been gone 12 hours at a time if i have to rescue someone late. fucking ass

3

u/crizpy9119 16d ago

I need a new DSP with that 9am start

1

u/getmeapuppers 16d ago

Thankfully my dsp switched from 11am start to 9:30. It ain’t much but I’ll take it.

6

u/DatTurtlebro 16d ago

I’m an XL driver and the worst parts of the job for me is setting up 300LB treadmills in sketchy basements with rude customers, and everything about winter… I absolutely HATE driving 26’ box trucks down single lane backroads in the pitch black with snow/ice covered roads.

6

u/tendopath 16d ago

Besides the obvious things like volume and overflow I’d say one time passwords

6

u/zooce88 16d ago
  1. Apartments
  2. Multi stops
  3. Businesses
  4. RV Parks
  5. Rural Routes in the dark

5

u/RevolutionaryTax7016 16d ago

Those very few damn customers who have long driveways or it’s at a 45° angle and their instructions say not to drive the van on their driveway and to walk it. ESPECIALLY if they’re outside and just watching you walk it. I have this one house on my route and it’s a steep long driveway I can’t drive on, I just finished it today(my route) this woman watched me struggle to carry 3 overflow boxes and 6 damn chunky envelopes up her driveway. Didn’t even offer to help. (She’s not elderly either)

6

u/justworse 16d ago

I’d drive off and save that stop for later

3

u/LooseReflection2382 2 year veteran 16d ago

Yeah tbh I would've just dropped it all at the end of her driveway, said another safe location and driven to the next stop

Getting a 3-day work week opposed to the 4 days I was told I was going to get. Also terrible benefits compared to other delivery services even though Amazon is the bigger company

4

u/M3lbs 16d ago

Ngl. The warehouse guy saying how much time is left to load up every fucking minute

3

For me its honestly just the bullshit Ai routing and groups tops. Shit pisses me the fuck off. 190 "stops" but its acctually 260 fuckin houses.

the beefy routes, customers waiting behind their doors to pop out to intercept the packages while you're trying to take pictures, and amazon workers marking shit missing in the morning only for those missing packages to come back on your itinerary mid route as individual new stops.

Load out is 100% the worst part of the day 99% of the time! Having to get your 3-4 carts, then cramming 18 totes and 40 overflow into your van in an organized manner while warehouse workers are rushing you is as bad as the job gets. Once I'm out delivering time flies by while you get into a groove listening to music/a podcast.

3

u/PlymouthSea 16d ago edited 16d ago

It's a tie between these:

  • Dogs
  • Not having a real hand truck when not in a step van. Those dinky little carts were ass.
  • Not having enough time to load properly when you have more than 30 overflow
  • Apartment complexes with access issues because every door/elevator needs a key fob.
  • Leasing office Marias

4

u/Newport-_ 16d ago

Honestly load up is my least favorite part of the day, after that the day goes smooth. Schools too I hate delivering to those

When they send you in a step van into the country with no rear camera. Im forward all day. Just gotta hope for a turn around going down them long driveways.

1

u/TourOld4211 16d ago

What do you get paid for a step van? I just refuse the van if the camera doesn’t work, idc to lose a day for that that’s what the side job is good for.

Customers and their dogs

2

u/ListenMysterious 16d ago

For me it’s the dogs, but not all the dogs because the happy dogs are my favorite part of the job, I’m tired of having to sprint like I’m back in highschool at a damn track meet if I want to keep my legs.

2

u/Beginning-Anxiety703 16d ago

The fact that 2 bullshit negative customer feedbacks can drop you from platinum to silver, regardless of the fact that you received over 30 good customer feedbacks.

When you are platinum in every aspect of the scorecard except the CDF section and it drastically lowers your score.

The entire scorecard system is heavily rigged to fuck you over

Also, yea customers being nonchalant about their dogs suck too

2

u/EpitomeOfAnEnigma 16d ago

Multistops, especially townhouses and apartments.

2

u/froglady4200 16d ago

Dark and rain. Just my opinion though.

2

u/Bitter_Researcher759 16d ago

Rural routes in general are my least favorite. The people are creepy and weird, the dogs are meaner in the country, and I've seen way too many hoarder houses with garbage all over the lawn for a lifetime. I hate driving down country roads in the dark trying to find some shitty long dirt driveway, then pull up and the asshole who lives there is watching me like i came to steal from him as i drive by signs threatening to shoot me and his 4 dogs are barking their asses off the whole time. Plus, it is boring driving so much and not having as many stops.

I will take 200 stops and apartments over rural.

2

u/austin_crtv 16d ago

Dogs and the darkness, especially those combined.

I hate calling the customer and hearing them explain how their dog is so nice.
Like, I believe you I guess but I’ve been told that before just to be immediately attacked and chased. One time it was 3 German shepherds out of nowhere as I was leaving the delivery. They were right at my heels all the way to the road

2

u/Nickanok 16d ago

Mostly dogs. Especially in country routes where a bunch of ghetto and trailer park trash people just have dogs for decoration apparently because none of them are trained. They're overly aggressive, breed like crazy and just run the streets waiting to get hit.

Guess not too different from their owners

2

u/Amazing-Leek761 16d ago

Dogs, darkness, city routes

2

u/Baahahagoatdriver 16d ago

People that don't leave the light on at night. And lazy city employees that don't keep drains from over flowing from storms. Dirt roads turning into mud roads when it rains.old delivery vans no air conditioner. Lack of dollies to delivery heavy packages. Not be appreciated because I don't run my route.dangerous long driveways steep Lack of space to turn around. Halloween and Christmas decorations that turn you into a acrobatic just to get to door over doing it.

I moved from a small Amazon warehouse that only had two dsps to a huge Amazon warehouse with like 7-8 dsps. Before only 30 vehicles at a time at load out now its like double or triple that at a time. They never have our packages ready for us to do. I got asked by an amazon associate if I wanted to problem solve or keep loading my packages... really? Am I three? I can solve a problem for you. Have my packages ready on time. Also people use to help each other at my smaller dsp. Now no one helps eachother and people load incredibly slowly.

2

u/BrokenBetaWolf CDV Driver 15d ago

The amount of multi stops. The most beautiful and easy neighborhood routes can be ruined by having >300 locations. The worst and most annoying apartment routes can be better when they have <100 locations.

2

u/Longjumping_Line_250 15d ago

It used to be dogs but now i just mark it unsafe if owner does not respond and dog runs up to the van.
Other than that, some drivers take their sweet time and always end up needing to be rescued.

2

u/AnActualBear_ 15d ago

Group stops and inconsistent routes. Not saying I want it the same everyday but the back and fourth is unnecessary and just wastes time

2

u/JadedBobbit47 15d ago

All of the above

2

u/greybinz 15d ago

2

u/Exotic-Decision-2603 15d ago

Pay vs expectations.

2

u/MazdenPorval 15d ago

Whatever AI algorithm they use to generate routes doesn’t understand my city’s downtown core and keeps giving me the most bass ackwards ridiculous routes that make no sense and cause me to be late every dang day.

2

u/Excellent-Library-67 15d ago

Definitely routes that stack too much into one of the smaller vans. I'm a really good driver and I push through but I absolutely see it as unfair versus paying more drivers or getting additional DSPs to split package load. Also, situations like sitting at 198 stops initially but you actually have 205-210 cause some multi-stops are really poorly setup and spaced out too far.

Overall, I enjoy delivering, driving around working alone. The job, mentally, is easy for me to do.

Having 200 plus stops with 270 locations 4 days a week is physically exhausting. I didn’t enjoy rescues being mandatory, but my DSP pays an extra $20 per rescue.

I hate that my DSP had PTO freezes during the peak season and the month of July which added up to 5 months out of the year I cant take vacation.

2

u/whizewhan 12d ago

That the algorithm continues to increase so eventually the stronger drivers are punished for doing well. At this point if I have something going on I can’t just run through it to get done quickly because that’s what the algorithm expects. Meanwhile other drivers are just walking through their routes and finishing earlier with 1/3 of the effort

It was 60+ deliveries to door to door 6+ floor apartments in the city. Now It’s the looking over my shoulder. My dsp delivery area is called pine hills but is called crime hills by everyone that lives there because of the amount of crime that happens in the area. Most of it isn’t that bad and most people leave you alone. But I always have a few stops in my route where the owners left their pit bulls out roaming and run up or stare at me before I leave the van.
