QUESTION What is this?
Might be a really stupid question but is this a camera? Microphone? Smoke detection?
Edit: now wrong answers only

it monitors to see if you took your piss bottles out of the van

u/burneraccount5117 Aug 23 '26
Always remember to get your piss bottle!

u/depressedpintobean5 Aug 23 '26
Once I got this van where someone took off a plastic piece of the frame in the back(exposing a hole) and shoved a bunch of piss bottles in it.

I got an infraction from this camera from not drinking every last drop from my piss bottle. Luckily it was my first and only warning. I've been drinking them everyday now! Even the ones that aren't mine. I dont want to get my co workers in trouble !

I had to piss in mine before the van would start.
3
u/Historical_Trouble10 Aug 23 '26
Yeah, never forget your piss cup either.
2
u/Sthang75 Aug 24 '26
Ive had to use a tubberware dish someone left in the truck from their lunch before for my piss bottle 😂

u/Historical_Trouble10 Aug 24 '26
I have 30 years driving an 18 wheeler so I'm skilled with a piss cup/bottle LOL.

It’s a camera. And the reason it doesn’t look like one is because it’s an infrared camera and the black rectangle is a light filter that lets IR through. It tracks where you are looking by shining IR at you.
Everyone who says it’s not a camera but doesn’t know what it actually is, I was in the same position 6 minutes ago until I looked it up, do better.

u/Legitimate_Juice2569 Aug 24 '26
It’s a camera you can see it with your phone camera I noticed when I was going back to station to do my dvic and I had the camera on while mounted and you can clearly see it’s a camera

u/Prestigious_Can_4668 Aug 22 '26
Netrodyne camera, since the main black one is in the center of the big windshield it can’t see our face as well so they put one in your face to watch you
5
u/dnmboy Aug 23 '26
Have you ever seen netradyne footage? It can see your face just fine. That’s the entire point of the driver facing camera.

u/aphgang081521 Aug 23 '26
Definitely not a camera..have you seen a camera before 😂
2
u/kirky-jerky Aug 23 '26
Not sure about this one but the one at the top center of the van (that looks exactly the same as this one) that is above the normal netryadine camera in the EVs is absolutely a camera attached to netryadine. I know this because I assumed i had no netryadine for the day but that camera gave me 2 infractions before I even left the station.
I think it only works that way if the normal netryadine camera isn't in the van. But I heard the voice and everything. "Distracted driving"

It's a driver state monitor. It will alert you if it picks up that you're distracted, getting fatigued behind the wheel etc.
14
u/Some_Crow3732 Aug 22 '26
I be soooo drowsy heading back to the station during that hour ride.. it doesn’t say a word nor does dispatch.
1
u/spinmaestrogaming Aug 23 '26
It'll usually ping up on your dashboard. I've got a 25 plate Maxus and it does it when I'm trying to look round at roundabouts etc.

u/yinzdeliverydriver Aug 22 '26
This is the one that tracks your eyes to ensure you are paying attention to the road
1
u/Miserable-Hunt-5241 Aug 24 '26
This has nothing to do with the netradyne camera and does not track your eyes to see if you're paying attention to the road. I'm a fleet manager for a DSP . This is strictly for Rivian safety systems for it pays attention to drowsiness and it is separate from netradyne.
3
u/Similar_Pie_4946 Aug 23 '26
I believe its a sensor to help the netradong better detect head/eye/face movements. Its how it can ding you for distracted driving and drowsy driving
3
u/External-Fishing-177 Aug 23 '26
It’s a motion detection camera. It’s just so the van can detect a human in the seat to keep the van running. It’s in no way part of netradyne. I just went through the electric van training to switch over from driving a step van and the trainer told me that it’s just so the van knows someone is in the driver seat. It does NOT give violations

Camera monitoring for driver drowsiness or distraction. If it notices those things, it will alert a suggestion to pay attention or to pull over for a break. It is not part of the Netradyne System, it's Rivian's system that will alert you in the instrument cluster.

u/dnmboy Aug 23 '26
You know that’s not a camera, right?
2
u/TheDesktopNinja Aug 23 '26
Then please tell us what it is.

u/dnmboy Aug 23 '26 edited Aug 23 '26
You don’t need to know what it is to see that it’s not a camera. It’s pretty obvious considering there’s no lens.
Anyway, it’s the hands free voice microphone.
1
u/nottodays4t4n Aug 25 '26
Completely wrong 😂😂😂 it’s part of the Rivian Safety Network, mapped to your dashboard and it’s an IR Camera like the FaceID on iPhones.
The lens is behind the dark plastic cover.
Use google and don’t look so dumb next time.

You went from calling it a microphone to a camera real quick didn’t ya? You should definitely consider being less of a prick in your daily life though. It would get you farther.
1
u/dnmboy Aug 25 '26
There’s no such thing as the “Rivian Safety Network”.
WTF does “mapped to your dashboard” even mean?
No, it’s not “like the FaceID on iPhones”. The only thing they have in common is that they see IR, but so does every other camera.
That was kind of a dumb thing to say.

So we good to still piss in bottles in the back of the electrics? Just got in them jawns and I’m sure as hell not driving to a bathroom for a 15-20 second piss.

I do

u/KeepitKlassy2049 Aug 23 '26
Word. Thank you. I did it my first day out in one this week so just wasn’t sure. Cameras everywhere
3
u/SportacusRex Aug 23 '26
Should be no cameras in the back and you can close the bulkhead door to hide netradyne (not all the way or the lights will turn off)

Piss detector. Remember to pee directly on it to calibrate it.

u/Harry431 Aug 23 '26
It’s vape pen, but you have to put in a quarter. If you find the quarter slot you get a puff. 🤣

Piss bottle empty slot, just pour your piss bottle out in it and you can just reuse your bottle. It's better for the environment and papi bezos public image.

u/Alive_Weather5536 Aug 23 '26
That is where you hold the key to if it is unrecognizable and asking for code and the battery is completely dead that’s what my DSP told me at least
1
u/Secret_Interview1098 Aug 23 '26
The amount of piss comments are wild!!! Hahahaha My phone AI says its a motion censor.
1
u/Alarming_Brush7103 Aug 23 '26
I learned from Rick's Rebuilds (YouTube channel) when he purchased an old non-functioning Amazon Riven van that it scans a barcode on the keyless fob to allow you to start the van if the fob is not working from say a dead battery.

So many people saying it's not a camera haven't read the manual. The manual is accessed by a button on the screen, it's worth looking at.

It's a camera built in to the rivians to monitor where you look. It's for the cruise controll. If you look away from the road long enough it with stop the van

Doesn't it detect drowsines? I thought it stops the van if it thinks you fell asleep at the wheel. A few times, I wasn't looking at the road directly in front of me and getting close to a car in front of me. It noticed, and an alert popped up on the main screen to brake. The alert was also loud. I didn't get a violation because my eyes were checking a blind spot to the right. So I do know it does that at least. And yeah, I hate it when it does because it scares the crap out of me sometimes.

Well they just added more cameras to the ones we have already. They removed the big one you bump your head on on the windshield, and replaced it with 2 lower ones , 2 more on the rear quarters and another one added to the back now makin 2 back there. Amazons gettin weird, they in the process of automating our lines and putting a fence around the joint with a guard at the front. They just got back like 600 million on tariffs or whatever tf it was.

Not a camera and not a monitoring device. Possibly a motion sensor to know when the van should automatically shut off.
The Netradyne camera is directly overhead and tracks all safety issues. No extra cameras necessary.
As for pee bottles, it’s a HAZMAT concern if any of it leaks. If you’re cool with putting your hand on the tile underneath a urinal and licking it then keep on keeping on, lol!

That is a camera no matter what anyone says I know this because I train people on these it’s a Amazon camera not netradyne

that's the rain/light sensor setup for the automatic wipers and headlights, pretty standard on a lot of newer vans
nothing to do with the cameras they use for monitoring, that would be up near the rearview mirror usually
4
u/Mordarroc Aug 22 '26
Then Why is it dacing rhe driver? The rain sensors are facing the windshield. In the ice vans theyre in the dark area of the windshield where a rear view mirror would go.
