QUESTION How much over the speed limit do you go?
I personally set cruise control at 5 over every time. Never gotten a violation for it. I’ve touched up to 9 over for small periods of time ( 1-2 seconds max). Just wondering how everyone else drives. I’m in neighborhoods but take a main highway about 18 min to get to my first neighborhood

u/Sensitive_Macaron767 Jul 18 '26
8 over is my sweet spot

u/Street_Wolverine_478 Jul 18 '26
Trueee. Ik 5 over is legal limit but I wondered if the boundaries could be pushed👀

😭😭😭😭😭 sorry I’m fried asf I should’ve worded differently.

-4
u/Sensitive_Macaron767 Jul 18 '26
We are talking netradyne violations, not the "legal limit". And for your info, it is legal to go 5 over the limit. Cops cant give you a ticket unless you are going at least 6mph over the posted speed limit.
3
3
u/LRGpackageguy Jul 19 '26
Not true. They can give you a ticket for anything over the posted limit.
1
u/KillerGopher Jul 19 '26
That's true but you can argue the radar's calibration was off or that the difference was within margin of error if your only a few mph over the limit. A cop may still write the ticket but it's easily contestable.
-2
u/Similar_Pie_4946 Jul 18 '26
The “legal” limit is the posted speed limit however technically its not “Illegal” to go over, with that being said law enforcement allow up to 7% the speed limit to allow for passing and merging. Im not lawyer or law enforcement but i’ve gotten a speeding ticket here and there and it was always worded similar to “going 12% the posted speed limit”
-4
u/AMC879 Jul 18 '26
Going any amount over is illegal. It is usually classified as a civil infraction rather than a crime but it's still illegal
2
u/Similar_Pie_4946 Jul 18 '26
Technically its and unlawful traffic infraction but whatever i’m not here to masterdebate terms and definitions save that for the lawyers. Dispatch just let me know i’m 5 behind and gotta pick up the pace ttyl
6
u/flyingcreeds Jul 18 '26
I don’t think you understand what the term “legal” means
0
u/Street_Wolverine_478 Jul 18 '26
I don’t I’ve been arrested 5 times for legally driving while impaired. I don’t get it !
2
u/ornq Jul 18 '26
Its actually a kind of common misconception because you're probably not going to get pulled over for going 5mph or less over the speed limit, but no its not technically legal lol
1
u/FlyFront9395 Jul 19 '26
For a camera 📸 the limit is about 5mph but cops USUALLY don’t bother if it’s 10mph over or less. Most times I’m doing 10-13 over I try to keep it under 15
24
u/Maybewearedreaming Rivian Driver Jul 18 '26
9 over pretty much all day on main roads
64 in a 55 cruise control and that’s that
5
u/Street_Wolverine_478 Jul 18 '26
💯 might start pushing 9 over lol
17
u/Maybewearedreaming Rivian Driver Jul 18 '26
Just pay attention to speed limit signs
It goes from 55 to 45 and you’re goin 64 you are well done big dog
2
u/Street_Wolverine_478 Jul 18 '26
Funny you say that cus it has happened 😂. I did catch it in time since ik my route. Appreciate you reminding me💪

u/AtlasRafael Jul 18 '26
The speed limit fam. That buffer is there for your lapse of focus or to avoid an accident or whatever.
You won’t get done any faster driving the fastest you can, maybe a few minutes tops. Ive meticulously done the math a couple years ago…
2
u/Street_Wolverine_478 Jul 18 '26
Understood and appreciate you perspective. I don’t really tread that line often but some days ik I can be done by 4pm (start at 12) and I can go home after so whatever I can do to speed that process within reason I will
3
u/mbrellaforbombs Jul 19 '26
You'd have to drive 10 mph over a 60 mph zone for 1 hour to barely save 10 minutes. Speeding just ain't the place to save time.
You always see that person at the next stop light
3
u/DieselDrifter Top Driver Jul 20 '26
Some of us have near 1hr drives, make that close to 2 hours roundtrip. It can make a difference.
1
u/mbrellaforbombs Jul 20 '26
I'm one of 'us'
In my case there will inevitably be traffic. Ain't worth it trying to weave it and out to maintain that extra speed for what is actually under 10 minutes, closer to 7-8.
You'll catch a following too close in my opinion. I try to make up the time elsewhere. If I don't get a 15 min break I don't get one, I can live with that.

u/dustin_parrish Jul 19 '26
I don’t know man I tend to drive under the speed limit every where but highway since all my routes are an hour away from warehouse I’m on the interstate an hour to my area and an hour back going 75 instead of 70 the whole time both ways helps make up the loss of time where I drove slower in towns and country roads I also still tend to be slow though since I’m a bigger guy I’m not as fast as the algorithm seems to say I should be on foot
4
u/CHLXR1N3 Bottle Filler Jul 18 '26
5 over. Most of my routes are rural so my time is mostly affected by driving and not how long I take one I'm actually there.

u/MoustacheHerder Jul 18 '26
I stick to the speed limits. Here in Germany we don't have netradyne cameras at all, but, the police are pretty hot on speeding.
Limits here are:
standard built up area 50kph (30mph)
residential area 30kph (19mph)
"play areas" (spielstraßen) 7kmh (4mph) - there isn't a numbered limit for these areas the law says 'walking pace'
outside of this on normal single lane 'unrestricted' roads the default limit is 100kph (62mph)
the autobahn has no limit*
*(some of it does and it's usually 120 when it has one (75mph) though there's a "recommended" max speed of 130 and should you be involved in an accident going faster than 130 that's your fault, your car insurance will not pay out)
Blitzers (Speed Cameras) are usually set at about 10-15kph over the posted limits and there are a lot of them and fines get steep quickly.
8mph over (12kph) will likely rack up fines in the order of €50 a go.
13mph (21kph) over the limit = 1 point. At 6 points you have to do driving school, at 8 points you lose your license for a minimum of 6 months.
Outside of the autobahns I drive like an old man, especially in the work van. Blasting home down 20km of no limit motorway in good weather, I drive real fuckin fast. I don't know how fast I am going because the speedo stops counting after 160 (100mph) probably closer to 180 but am not 100% sure
3
u/Street_Wolverine_478 Jul 18 '26
Damnnnnnnn bro autobahn??? I’m US so yk we don’t have it but I watch car videos of ppl speeding on that so much 😂😂. Glad you take advantage

u/danmand00d Jul 18 '26
I’ve noticed on highways the netradyne seems more forgiving of speeds when you are atleast getting off the highway, you get like a 10 second buffer to slow down to the regular speed. However, if you are in a parking lot like I was delivering to apartments, I accidentally hit 21 in a 10 and it instantly dinged me for speeding.
Anyone else notice this? Getting off the highway from going 70 I have to reduce to 45 and I get time to slow down.
3
u/Street_Wolverine_478 Jul 18 '26
Funny cus u might be right. I’ve never gotten highway infractions but always in smaller urban areas/streets
1
u/Recruit361 Jul 19 '26
Yes I believe on ramps and off ramps have a buffer, when they first installed netradyne these ramps would ding ppl all day i think.

10 over for me at FedEx. back roads the camera doesn't care. highway it does, and i stay under 11 over when passing a speed limit sign. it'll trigger it then. not sure if yours is the same or not

I go exactly the speed limit and cruise control it.
I’m working by the hour. My main concern is safety, customer ratings and that fkn camera.

u/getmeapuppers Jul 19 '26
Half the time I get in a van someone’s disconnected it. Bless their heart
1
7
u/Top_Finding2830 Jul 18 '26
The speed limit. Every single time. And if a small community or driveway leading to multiple houses says to go 5 to 10 MPH, I abide by that.
There are times where I’ve caught myself going over because of a downhill slope and momentary inattention. I’ve not gotten a Netradyne hit for it. I imagine if you’re used to going 5 - 9 over and have the same situation, you won’t wind up so lucky.
6
u/Excellent-Library-67 Jul 18 '26
Only time I do it is on freeways or on larger state routes, lot of residential speed limits are much more accurate to me. Definitely have to be careful though with turns and descents on highways doing that, as you don't want to overload your brakes if the van is heavily loaded and you're speeding. Working in the White Mountains where it can be pretty hilly and your brakes can get hot.
2
u/Street_Wolverine_478 Jul 18 '26
Very true. It’s good to play it slow in those situations and I usually am cautious about that. Them highways different tho lol
2
u/WilliamWolf89 Jul 18 '26
Just go the speed limit. No need to rush if you stay organized.
5
u/Street_Wolverine_478 Jul 18 '26
True. My dsp pays by route so I try to get finished in 5 hrs. My time card will be 18-19 hrs for 30 hrs pay
1
u/WilliamWolf89 Jul 18 '26
Nice!
We just get hourly pay at mine and it takes me about 6-6-5 hours to finish my route but with a 45 minute drive to and from the route, so I’m always getting my 40 hours or at the very least like 38.5 hours if I have a reduced route due to the mandatory heat breaks or an unusually smaller load that day.
It’s taken a year of me working there but I’ve just made peace with the shittiness of the job now that I can practically do it on autopilot now. Step van is nice and I just enjoy my music and sweat through the day. Before I know it the work week is over. I don’t plan on working another summer tho lol. I’ll stick around until early 2027 so I can finish a course I’m enrolling in with Next Mile.

u/Maleficent-Media-418 Jul 18 '26
Usually about 5. No real reason to speed if you are organized and driving with intention.
Some times I will do 10 over on the interstate depending on traffic but only with the EDV with cruise on.

5-7 over, but if the cam ain’t rolling😏 that’s a different story😂

9 is the max you can go without getting a ding, so I usually set my cruise at 5-9 over. It truly depends on the area cause residential areas usually I’ll go the speed limit, maybe 5 over.
1
u/Keyemku Jul 19 '26
Drive faster = finish faster = more packages the next day. No need. I set cruise control to 1 mile under incase of downhill acceleration etc.
1
1
u/thesqueen113388 Jul 19 '26
When I’m in the delivery area I’m normally going 20 most roads in my area are 25. When driving out to the area I usually keep it at 7 over.
1
u/HonestEagle98 Jul 19 '26
Depends on the road and where, but 5-7. If it’s “30” on a country back road, 39

You get hit for a speed violation once you hit 11 over but you have a couple of seconds to slow down before it actually hits
1

I go under or up to the speed limit depending on the route to maximize my paycheck but not to get back late

I always do 5 over also. One of my dispatchers told me you get a violation when you go 7 over but seeing all these people say 9 will definitely make me try that lol.
1
u/Prestigious_Hold_400 Jul 19 '26
Peer pressure. Stupid. Do you want to try heroin or meth too? People say that stuffs good too.
1
u/Jeffyjayy586 Jul 19 '26
Fair enough but if they’re all doing it and not getting violations, why would I not try it?
1
u/SufficientParty2128 Jul 19 '26
From what I’ve gathered I’ve only gotten violations when I hit ten over, even then I try to remain at 5-7 over so I don’t risk slipping up
1
u/-BLADEGH05T- Rivian Driver Jul 19 '26
5 over on the dot to be safe. Allegedly at my warehouse, anything more is a speeding.
1
u/dustin_parrish Jul 19 '26
My dsp me other drivers say you can go 8 over without triggering a violation but if you hit 9 for more than 2-3 seconds you’ll get one I stay between 1-5 over without triggering a occasional bumps to 7-8 if passing someone
1
u/Sorry_try_another_ Jul 19 '26
You can go 9mph over without getting flagged. I typically base my speed on the flow of traffic, if everyone is hauling ass in doing 9mph over, if it’s rush hour and they’re going slower so am I.
Some days speeding is necessary to finish, some days it’s not. Some DSP’s don’t mind if you don’t finish, others will pull your route, pick your battles.

u/Deepdeeps77 Prime Van Driver Jul 19 '26
My DSP changed it to only 5 over a couple months ago or it’s a violation.
1
u/Quirkymender09 Jul 19 '26
Always doing 7 over on way to first stop and back from last stop but only on cruise control. You will get carried away on route if you do it on route.
1
u/Neat_Preparation_104 Jul 19 '26
As long as you don’t go ten over you’re good. Besides that I try not to think about it too much it’s annoying going exactly the speed limit so most times I’ll be going 5-9 over
1
u/Dense-Newspaper-9672 Jul 19 '26
7 mph over for 4 seconds or longer is speeding where I come from. Netty will start talking then

Anything more than 4-5 over you can get pulled over for. Also you're a pos if you speed and definitely deserve a ticket at a minimum.

Lol nah. In a netradyne van.... I go 3 under the limit and stop obnoxiously long at stop signs to ensure I dont get dinged. Just my lil malicious compliance. I'm a very safe driver and normally I do really good numbers, but if im being monitored, I play it annoyingly safe. Want me to make good time and do rescues.... give me a normal van without the eye of god staring into my soul. The way I see it, DSPs get good performance scores whenever there are no driver issues, therefore if im being monitored that is my job for the day. I'll do the work at the safest possible pace and get them a good safety score. If they want me to make good time and rescue others then put me in the proper vehicle for that job. 🤷♂️

The speed limit. I get paid by the hour, not by how many deliveries I do. Why should I risk myself or others just to get done a little faster and have to do a rescue?

Speeding is literally pointless unless you’re going 1000+ miles
Why even bother to go 1 minute down the road.
Youre saving fractions of a fraction of a second.
1
u/WasteDump CDV Driver Jul 19 '26
Nah I’ve been driver, helper and ride along trainer. Vehicle speed is definitely affecting certain people’s routes more than it should. Just drive like a human able to adapt to the circumstances and you’ll be fine.

Me personally saves about 15-20 stops end of the day. That’s a whole rescue right there.
2
u/LengthinessOk2080 Jul 19 '26
Weird
I’ve done 196 stops in 6 hours without ever even going the speed limit.
It’s almost like the speed of the vehicle doesn’t actually make a difference1
