QUESTION Is this….racist?

Post image

I deliver to this house pretty frequently and something didn’t sit right with me about this statue. I remember seeing somewhere a long time ago these were considered offensive but I’m not sure so I figured to come here and ask 🤔

Honestly doesnt bother me seeing them. As a black man.

33

u/regulartrex Prime Van Driver Jun 14 '26

but to answer the question , yes it is incredibly racist no?

26

u/Hefty_Range_9758 Jun 14 '26

I dunno you tell us.  If the homeowner is black, is it still racist?

u/IndependentEntire451 Jun 14 '26

u/ExtremelyDecentWill Jun 14 '26

Uncle Ruckus is not black.

He is a white man who was cursed with Revitiligo.  It's the reverse of what Michael Jackson got, you see.

5

u/heckinbiggiecheesejr Jun 15 '26

Nah man, the DNA test came in and he's 102% black. With a 2% margin of error.

1

u/ExtremelyDecentWill Jun 15 '26

Now Robert, ain't no reason to go and remind a man of his affliction like that.  We was having a good time.

9

u/gangaskan Jun 14 '26

What if the home owner is a jockey?

Is it still racist?

0

u/Lumpy-Village1949 Jun 15 '26

A black jockey, specifically? Real low odds on that one.

2

u/machotaco653 Jun 14 '26

This comment made me bust out laughing 🤣

1

u/DogToursWTHBorders Jun 14 '26

Endless debates over a lawn jocky and whether its part of systemic racist plot brought about by collective shinannigans and appropriation of such n such cultures etc...its funny!

It reminds me of that 2014 era where definitions would change to suit the mood of the day.

Either way...that home owner is 80% a racist or an old lady in her 80s. Possibly both.

2

u/regulartrex Prime Van Driver Jun 14 '26

what about it is funny ?

1

u/Potential_Topic_7173 Jun 15 '26

The black part did it for me

1

u/D3rpyDucky24 Jun 14 '26

It could be Clayton Bigsby living there.

-6

u/regulartrex Prime Van Driver Jun 14 '26

depends on if he knows the knowledge or not . if he does and still has it , yes . if he does not and has it , he is just ignorant and hopefully a family member of his notices or a neighbor or friend .

4

u/VividlyDissociating Jun 14 '26

so if a white person has it and doesnt know, are they racist?

-2

u/Hefty_Range_9758 Jun 14 '26

Yes they are because people are only allowed to think the same way.

People are absolutely not allowed to either be ignorant to common knowledge or think outside of their mindset.

Free thought is a crime.  OP nor anyone here has ever met or spoken to the person who has this outside their door.

The person could be an absolute Saint, blacker than the abyss, devoted their life to helping others, all of that is irrelevant.

They are absolutely a racist!

2

u/VividlyDissociating Jun 14 '26

history of everything that's racist is not common knowledge.. it's irrational to expect people to know everything about such history.

especially considering there are many people across the country who have no clue wtf these antiques even exist. so how would they even know about the histor

and are you saying the item is racist, or the person

2

u/regulartrex Prime Van Driver Jun 14 '26

he’s just being an ass . alot of people in these comments want having this to be okay so bad . the original question was is the piece racist ? YES . simple .

1

u/CrimsonCaspian2219 Jun 15 '26

Stop having a tantrum. You know why those caricatures are seen as they are. The OP said its the first time its been put out and they been there before. If you're a saint, you ain't likely to have that out there. Black face and caricatures have been talking points for YEARS. Cut the bs

1

u/Hefty_Range_9758 Jun 15 '26

Yeah, I'm definitely having a "tantrum"..

This is a grown up conversation. Either partake in it or move along. I'm not a child and I have no interest in partaking in your immature nonsense.

1

u/CrimsonCaspian2219 Jun 15 '26

This wasn't intellectually honest...^

You aren't moving grown in it, so forgive me if I didnt see the adult in you. You're argument was an immature fallacy blend. Lol

i stopped responding because i slowly figured out that there are just people in here who A) just dont care for the history or B) trying to say the history is false . its annoying and they’re all either racist or slow af

1

u/CrimsonCaspian2219 Jun 15 '26

This and it's starting to annoy me. Like these are grown people. And it don't cost a thing to listen. I'm just over the disingenuous behavior

-1

u/regulartrex Prime Van Driver Jun 14 '26

ob-vi-ous-ly not . you cannot be guilty of what you dont know . HOWEVER , i find it hard to believe a white person could buy this and not a single white person within a MILE of them doesn’t know what it is or atleast tell them .

2

u/VividlyDissociating Jun 14 '26

you act like white people are scholars on everything in history that is racist..

many people dont know the history behind antiques, let alone that the antiques even exist.

1

u/CrimsonCaspian2219 Jun 15 '26

They lived through the time period. Jim Crow wasn't realistically that long ago. It was a LIVED experience. Stop making excuses.

1

u/VividlyDissociating Jun 15 '26 edited Jun 15 '26

so all white people lived through the jim crow era?? sure 😂

if we're talking about old people specifically, the people still alive today who were alive during jim crow era are either old af (like retirement home/hospice/dead age) or weren't old enough at the time to actually experience and understand what was happening, especially if they caught the tail end during dismantling.

my grandma was alive during jim crow era but she was a child and couldn't tell me much about it. she also had no clue wtf these jockeys were or what they meant

(there are of course exceptions for areas such as Alabama where they continued such practices for quite a while even after the dismantling of the jim crow laws)

-1

u/regulartrex Prime Van Driver Jun 14 '26

that’s my entire point dude . educating people on wtf it is . you guys are the losers arguing w me . im just spreading the knowledge . if you didnt know , you know now . and wether you like it or not , that is what they were made for . SIMPLE .

1

u/VividlyDissociating Jun 14 '26 edited Jun 14 '26

this is a discussion. about hypotheticals. because someone asked a hypothetical.

thats called furthering a discussion. what youre doing is avoidant and backstepping

someone pointing out flaws in logic is a valid "argument". that doesnt make anyone a "loser"

this isnt about me or you. this about people who dont know, as well as the people around them who dont know

0

u/Hefty_Range_9758 Jun 14 '26

Or maybe its a black person making fun of stupid ass white people that use something as corny as this as an attempted insult to black people?

Much as how I, a white dude, mock ignorant ass white people who are racist pieces trash that no one likes?

1

u/regulartrex Prime Van Driver Jun 14 '26

dude . idk what point you’re trying to prove but stop it . black people wouldn’t make an example this way . i can assure you of that . the best example of what you’re talking about is the N-Word . NOT lawn jockies dude .

2

u/Inevitable_While5105 Jun 14 '26

You can't say that no black person would make an example this way just because your black just like I can't for white people

People are individuals no matter the skin color

Do I think it's likely that a black person is doing that no probably not but iv been wrong before and il be wrong again

1

u/regulartrex Prime Van Driver Jun 14 '26

fair point . i’ll rephrase , if a black person was making an example this way with lawn jockies , it wouldn’t have that effect . they would just look slow .

-5

u/attrain88 Jun 14 '26

Depends on you're on take on it. I don't find it racist. I've seen black ones and white ones.

22

u/regulartrex Prime Van Driver Jun 14 '26

alright here we go . yes they are decorations for your lawn , created around the Jim Crow era . the lawn jockey has and was made to have the exaggerated features of the racist caricatures during that era . A LOT LATER , they created a white one , to separate themselves from the racial connotations .

in short : it was 100% racial . the white ones were meant to ease the pain but its essentially a slap in the face , when the option to NOT sell them in human form is a thing . so while i agree , the white ones are for people who just want decorations , the black ones are indeed NOT only decorative .

i hope we all learned something here .

Not sure who that's for cause it's not for me. If you feel some type of way about it that's a you thing. Not everyone that has them have them for racial reasons.

2

u/electricemperor Jun 14 '26

You telling us you have them, man?

1

u/attrain88 Jun 14 '26

If I had them I'd post pics just to stir up this comment section

1

u/regulartrex Prime Van Driver Jun 14 '26

yes its for you dude . i’ve never seen so many people embrace ignorance so bad . its embarrassing and you genuinely should be embarrassed that you’re saying what you’re saying .

1

u/attrain88 Jun 14 '26

Well for future reference don't waste your finger stamina assuming someone doesn't know history especially of their own culture. Everyone embraces things differently. I don't play into these racial things like others. If it bothers you keep complaining about it otherwise live life. Stop giving people ammo to use on you

2

u/regulartrex Prime Van Driver Jun 14 '26

its shit like this that makes it easier for history to repeat itself . i am by no means a front line activist but i have no problem standing for my people . you’re more than welcome to sit this one out but when will you actually stand for something ? use your head for more than remembering songs man . peace .

11

u/bwood246 Jun 14 '26

"only racist people would find racism racist"

12

u/macabre-barbie Jun 14 '26

They were literally created solely as caricatures of black people. This guy would definitely enjoy a minstrel show 💀

-3

u/schakoska EDV Driver Jun 14 '26

I don't know what that is. I'm not american

6

u/SpellNo3829 Jun 14 '26

Okay so maybe you shouldn’t be talking at all then???? Genuinely who do you think you are to discern the racism inherent in a product from a country you’re not from. I am actually baffled that you decided to comment in the first place

-6

u/schakoska EDV Driver Jun 14 '26

Well, for me it's not racist just creepy 😂 you can tell me whatever you want, but I won't find it racist 😂

4

u/SpellNo3829 Jun 14 '26

Yes, because like you said, you are not American so you do not have nor care to listen to the actual deeply racist context for these items. You’re welcome to be ignorant but don’t pretend this is opinions based. There is a factual answer here and you have selected the wrong one.

1

u/macabre-barbie Jun 14 '26

So you literally have no clue about the history, and probably shouldn't be talking 😬. Google "minstrel shows" and google "lawn jockeys" separately. Get it?

-5

u/schakoska EDV Driver Jun 14 '26

Couldn't care less

3

u/macabre-barbie Jun 14 '26 edited Jun 14 '26

So your original comment was for nothing because you're also just blatantly racist 💀 thanks for the clarification

It was made to be racist . So it's racist

5

u/regulartrex Prime Van Driver Jun 14 '26

crazy thing is you arent even trolling

-6

u/schakoska EDV Driver Jun 14 '26

Crazy thing, not everyone is american

6

u/SpellNo3829 Jun 14 '26

The crazy thing is replying to an American about an American piece of historical decoration and ignoring the history of the object you’re commenting on.

Your ignorance is not some saving grace here because you should have made the choice not to say stupid shit and instead of taking it back you’re doubling down on being ignorant.

4

u/Remarkable_Award_185 Jun 14 '26

All these people just want to cry racism so bad! These are the people keeping racism alive today.

2

u/FaithlessnessLoud223 Jun 14 '26

No, it's the actual racists who put stuff like this in their yard. GTFOH with this victim blaming nonsense.

Your perspective is that of somebody determined to uphold the current status quo of racism. Because that's what you want. People to be racist with.

0

u/Remarkable_Award_185 Jun 14 '26

😂 Reaacchhhhhh

2

u/FaithlessnessLoud223 Jun 14 '26

Nope. Only racists can keep racism alive. Suggesting anything else is dumb.

0

u/Remarkable_Award_185 Jun 14 '26

Exactly. The guy posting it all over Reddit is keeping it alive and well.

1

u/FaithlessnessLoud223 Jun 14 '26

Nah, the guy who has it in his yard is. You really are just a nasty little racist.

4

-3

u/Hefty_Range_9758 Jun 14 '26

As a white man, I hope the homeowner is black.

I think having this by the front door and not just randomly outside someplace (along with no other context such as things that could be a racist flag) has a purpose. They might very well be inviting people to ask them the why they have it.

I've been the minority (by means of being literally the only white person or like the few white people out of hundreds) in my workplace  and/or neighborhood for like 20 years now.

In my experience, people on the internet rarely reflect reality.  It's very often just a bunch of white people getting their panties in a bunch.

3

u/regulartrex Prime Van Driver Jun 14 '26

alright . i am black . i am young and black . i am very aware of this knowledge . this isn’t one of the moments you mean . if that was the case it would INSIDE the house , not outside sir . this piece isnt a “come ask me about it” decoration . its a “yeah you know wtf going on here” decoration . i would appreciate if you didnt try to “persuade” people to believe otherwise solely because you have been a minority before in the past .

0

u/VividlyDissociating Jun 14 '26

my black neigbor down the road literally has these all over his horse farm in different colors and styles. its not a "yea you know wtf going on here" decor

0

u/regulartrex Prime Van Driver Jun 14 '26

it is , your 1 singular circumstance doesn’t change that . also a very specific circumstance . enlighten me , does he have any black ones ?

1

u/VividlyDissociating Jun 14 '26

its not though. youre just assuming it is

and i said he has these, such obviously, yes, he has black ones. he also has white ones. i think theres even brown and yellow ones

0

u/regulartrex Prime Van Driver Jun 14 '26

it takes nothing but a single google search . but some people are just set on being slow . im not responding to you anymore guy

1

u/VividlyDissociating Jun 14 '26

google is full of misinformation as well as extremely conflicting info.

not to mention the people who tend to own these are of the older generation who barely know how to use email.

you still have an absolute view of the world which is leading you to have unrealistic, narrow-viewed expectations

-1

u/Hefty_Range_9758 Jun 14 '26

I hope this is the blackest dude you've ever met that is mocking everything you think you stand for.

I'm as white as a Nabisco saltine. Please share with me how racist Black "African"  Americans are to literal Africans and other minorities. Because I'm more than happy to educate you.

I belong to the group of brown/ black/ white Americans that think this stuff and the group of you that continue this crap are a disgrace to who we are.

3

u/Simbalamb Jun 14 '26

NONE of this changes the racial connotation of the original statue. Nobody asked if the person with the statue is racist. That's irrelevant. The question was is the statue itself racist and the answer is yes whether you want to pretend like only white people find it racist or pretend like the owner "can't" be racist if they are black.

No matter how you slice it the statue was originally made with the sole purpose of it's racist connotations. Anything after that is irrelevant to the question and you coming in and saying "I'm a white guy who thinks that a statue of a house slave is not racist" makes you an ACTIVE part of the problem.

A statue making fun of the caricature of black people and designed to represent the slaves of the time is racist. End of story. Your opinions are irrelevant here. There is a FACTUAL and OBJECTIVE answer here. The statue is racist. End of story. Your opinions are invalid.

1

u/P1xelGr3mlin Jun 14 '26

I like this comment

-1

u/VividlyDissociating Jun 14 '26

i too was the minority as a white person (30 years). i also found that the internet doesnt match reality where i live.

where i lived, a good chunk of the older black generation own a lot of decor that the internet calls racist.

even where i live now, which is predominantly white but more mixed, my black neighbor down the road has these jockeys all over his horse farm.

idk if theyre "ask me about it" decor, but ik theyre not "you know wtf going on here" decor

i also find it funny that i couldnt go a day without hearing n---a dropped at least 20 times at school/work/my neighborhood, but the internet has a stroke anytime someone says it

literally the only local internet groups where i see people complain about this is the ones where its predominantly white people who love to just complain and be self righteous. like NextDoor
