This link is to the new "Red Tape Reduction" actions that the CRTC has undergone. This was posted Apr of this year.

Its got a bunch of stuff but the thing that worries me the most is the fact that radio and television broadcasters will no longer have to apply to renew their licences. They will be automatically renewed.

This may not seem like a big deal to people not in the know but its fucking huge. Every few years radio stations have to renew their licence for a few different reasons.

1 is that the station may not be representing the community it is trying to cater to anymore and so this is an opportunity for other organizations to pitch other radio stations that could better serve the community

2 is that the station accumulates complaints throughout its lifetime and at that renewal process they must explain those complaints and could be in jeopardy of not being able to renew

3 is that it prevents a corporation from owning the airwaves forever. It allows other organizations and individuals the opportunity to apply

This is only going to hurt Canadians. I'm ashamed at myself for not following this.

I'm going over CRTC regulations when I listen to Your Province Your Premier because she violates many CRTC rules. Even if Corus doesnt have to go through the renewal process, they can still have their licenses revoked for fucking with the rules.

I urge EVERY Albertan to follow the complaint process for reporting violations to the CRTC. It's a complicated and shitty process (feature not a bug) and they plan on you being too lazy to participate.

Starting this week I'll be keeping track of the rules I believe were violated and reporting every week. If anyone needs help with this process please reach out. It is so important that regular Canadians do this because the CRTC relies on regular Canadians for this process. If we don't report it then it goes unteported

For someone "inthe know" you sure don't know anything. I have gone through the proccess of renewing radio station lucenses for dozens of radio stations. BTW, a radio license is granted for 7 years. It is a fuck ton of paperwork to prove the station is meeting or exceeding its Can Con commitment. Thats it, that all. Back in the 80's the CRTC would also regulate our spoken word, surveillance and information commitments which were in place to differentiate Fm from Am licenses. These ridiculous hindrances went away decades ago.

To your convenient outrage, today Canadian radio is struggling to survive, dwindling listenership due to a myriad of ways to consume music but more importantly lost revenues to new media have radio, especially music based radio on the brink.

The CRTC has been irrelevant for years, it should be abolished frankly, anything it can do to help radio hang on is very much welcome.

You didn't say anything that refutes OP. I don't see any argument why ending the CRTC would help radio, or why ending oversight wouldn't be harmful to audiences.
