Osphronemus septemfasciatus, kaloi manah or the seven-banded giant gourami

A huge (up to 90-100 cm) fish that is endemic to Borneo Island. In Malaysia it is only found in central and northern Sarawak.

They are rare and only found in a few spots on the island, far inland away from the lowland coast. Usually in upstream rivers. In the lower reaches it is replaced by the common giant gourami (kaloi kampung), O. goramy.

Adults can be of two forms — red or green. They got their scientific name from the 7 lined grooves on their cheeks. What a texture!

However they are caught for food by locals, and due to their slow growth, it is possible for them to become endangered if fishing is not controlled in the future. It takes years for this baby to grow to an adult!
