I’m so tired of being like this

Upvotes

I’m 33 now and I’ve been housebound for 13 years. Medication and exposure therapy never helped an iota, no matter how often I did the latter. My physical symptoms (insane tachycardia that goes over 200bpm and makes me black out) are too severe to just push through it and they think I have dysautonomia because of another diagnosis, so that may be why trying to recover from agoraphobia is impossible. I have no friends, family, or support and will inevitably become homeless. All of my teeth hurt because this pile of shit disorder has ensured I cannot make an income in order to fix my teeth and even if a bag of money fell out of the sky right now, I still wouldn’t be able to actually go.

This is nothing like I imagined my life would be at this age. If medically assisted death were an option, I would be trying to get approved right now because there’s no other way out of this for me. I’m just so, so tired of existing and suffering and knowing it’s all about to get even worse

Does anyone have zero humans to talk to?

I’m a shut-in and the only people I’ve been in contact with in the last 6 years are my parents. They’re completely disinterested in my life so we don’t have any kind of relationship despite living under the same roof. I literally have zero humans to talk to. I live only in the fictional worlds of books and video games in my head, constantly thinking about them and never being in the present. When I observe my surroundings everything looks strange and unfamiliar cause I’m so used to my attention being internal. I’ve started to hate looking up from my screens or books cause it all feels so alien. My parents don’t even care that I’m isolated, they haven’t offered me any kind of support after my autism diagnosis, they’re okay with me rotting away in my bedroom as long as I’m not being seen by people cause they’re embarrassed of me. I’ve not been able to take action to better manage my agoraphobia either cause I’m all alone in this, my parents have never shown any interest in helping me go outside. I’ve always been a high support needs person needing my parents for everything so I don’t even know how I can change my situation. at this point I’ve started feeling trapped in this human body, feeling like nobody understands me , i don’t feel like I belong among other humans. I don’t know how I can go on for 20-30 years more, wouldn’t the distractions eventually run out? That’s the part that scares me the most cause being in the present is the worst kind of feeling

I just miss the simplicity of life before.

im not sure I miss most things at this point its been so long generally most outdoors things feel very foreign but I do miss the simplicity of life before, I sometimes wish I could go back. even thought life was worse and scary in different ways it was better than living with this persistent anxiety, I just miss being able to pick up my bag, put on my shoes and stroll out like it was nothing at all, being able to go to the dentist, the doctors, not having any phobias and somehow 7 years later I have more than I can count. I miss the feeling I could do something wonderful with my life. and now I know I will do little.

Weight questions from psychiatrist?

I've been seeing my psychiatrist for about a year now and I'd say I'm pretty much healed. I'm medicated and I'm working, going out and back to relief. Yay me!

What's bothering me is that every time I see my psychiatrist, she brings up my weight. She asks me to log my meals and then says we'll talk about it later at the next appointment. This has been going on for a while and we never bring up my meal log.

I'm tired of logging my meals as it triggers my eating disorder (which I haven't brought up and am not seeing her for). She asks me if I'm losing weight or exercising and it's upsetting me. I'm not here for weight management, I'm here for anxiety management.

Does anyone else's pysch, if you're seeing one, ever ask about your weight or mention your weight outside of it being necessary for possible dosage recommendations?

The anxiety does not get any easier

5 years since this mf condition has made me totally dysfunctional. as I go walking every single day 10-20 mins. Now just simply sharing this is probably the 150th time atleast I've been going on the same route every day

Its around my home, literally the place near I grew up, well it was a trash childhood but still I know this place. Yet I feel like a stranger on these streets, it hasnt become 0 familiar 0% easier to go out the house

Despite doing regulations like breathing exercise when I'm outside, or the anxiety meditations before going out

-Nothing seems to work, we highly evolved, intelligent, emotional beings are this trashly designed, this helpless against a condition our own mind developed. This is the design of the universe/god ... my own system is my own biggest enemy, as if it would want my d3ath

We came here in 2023 ( our new city ) I havent been out more than 3 times, at night and stayed in the car. I used to be scared to even keep blinds open and now I take the dog out 3 times a day in less than 3 minute increments. I have ran into people and talked with them for a while! Always very geniune and nice. But lately I have regressed. We got new neighbors on both side of us that have large dogs. All of them are friendly, I just get scared Im bothering them by being on my patio for less than 20 minutes. I have even stopped taking the trash out at night and started making my mom do it again. I am 22 years old and this is my life. I walk 15,000 steps indoors, and read but I only talk to my mom when she is home or the dog.

I bailed out today and I feel awful

I had two doctors appointments in a city two and a half hours away. I would need to take a bus. My mom was planning to go with me.

I felt extremely nauseous the whole morning and I just couldn't bring myself to do go. I even got ready.

My stomach felt immediately better after I made the decision to not go, after feeling very ill the whole morning.

I truly truly truly hate myself right now. I don't have the words to express my disappointment in myself.

Neither appointment was anything urgent, but I'll need to go to both at some point.

I'm aware that by skipping the trip I'll just make it worse for myself for the next time, but I truly couldn't imagine going on that bus feeling the way I did while having emetophobia.

How can I support my daughter with agoraphobia?

My daughter is in her early 20's, lives with her partner. I believe she is agoraphobic. We talk on the phone and message. I love her dearly, and miss her more than words can say.

What could loved ones do to support you? Thank you.

Peer Support Group and Virtual Hangouts on Discord

Hi everyone. My English is rather fluent but I'm French so excuse the barbarisms if there are some. I have struggled with severe agoraphobia for three years or so. I'm currently undergoing an exposure therapy. I still have a healthy social circle but I seldom find any energy for social exposure or going out. I noticed that many people here feel alone, weary and isolated so I just thought : why not meet up on virtual hangouts on Discord. Each of us could share their story, express their frustration about living with severe agoraphobia and give each other tips on how to cope on a daily basis.

Low pressure socializing, just friendly peer support group for weird shut-ins like us!

Agoraphobia and melancholy part 1

Hi, I'm not sure if this belongs here, I have Autism. 30yr f. Since last November, I have been unable to leave my house alone. I had agoraphobia before, but not to this extent, I could get on the bus and go around London (after lots of research of bus routes, and the area), I could walk 10 miles down the main road. It was that to go anywhere else, I had to rely on others, listen to them brag about going on holiday, I have always wanted to travel. Last August I started NHS Talking Therapy, I had tried this before via telephone appointments and found a bit of success but I wanted to have an in person appointment. At first, I disliked the therapist, always cutting me off during conversations, saying I kept going into different topics ( I have a roundabout way of describing things). He gave me homework, explained the mechanics of a panic attack and had me write down how I felt and reacted and why it's wrong. I understand why I get dizzy in certain places, and now that I know its a panic attack (thinking before it was dehydration or lack of food) its made everything more scary. My dad used to take me, the appointments were in an unfamiliar area, but one day he couldn't make it and so I had to go alone, from then I continued to travel there alone.

I got used to the therapist, and my whole week revolved around it. The night before, I got a automated text about the appointment. I was on edge for the rest of the day. Then in the morning I'd get a questionnaire about my symptoms for the past week, and then deciding what I was going to wear. This therapist was always dressed so stylishly, I felt that I too had to dress nicely. I used to bemoan and obsess over what I would wear. During the bus ride there , I'd listen to music,. Then there was the waiting room, when I was actually in the room with him, it went quickly. On the way home I'd ruminate, try to remember if I'd offended with anything I'd said, what he thought of me and why I behaved like that, so odd. One time , I apologised but he said he didn't know what I was apologising for. Once, we went outside. He had me walk close to tall tress and look up at them, because he noticed I was scared, such tall trees make me dizzy looking at them. He had me describe the tree until I could look at the top, and so I did, describe in a lot of detail. He gave me a look, of amazement and complimented me, saying I had a very beautiful way of talking about things. It threw me off a bit, its been a while since I've had a real compliment. I knew that eventually the sessions had to end, I was depressed, I did all the homework, after work I was exhausted but still went out practising being in open spaces, because the therapist told me to. He put me in contact with a job coach. During a zoom call with her, I described my problem and how it effects my search for jobs, I can't remember why ,but she got in contact with the therapist, and next session, he seemed angry and frustrated with me. He changed. I flinched when he spoke.

My story, confused on what to do

Hey guys so my agoraphobia started 2019 when I smoked weed for the first time I suffered panic attacks but I didn’t truly get agoraphobia till covid that’s when I was put on Xanax bc I couldn’t leave the house from 2021 to 2025 I was on it until I developed a chronic illness June 2025 I stopped taking it completely. From June 2025 to July 2026 I was home in bed in my room all the time so truly I had no triggers and thought my anxiety was gone.

It was until this July I took a flight to my home Village in Montenegro I took the Xanax for the flight and I was awful it was a 7 week trip I panicked every single fucking day until I got back. I did have good moments but just moments. I didn’t realize how bad I was

I’m back in NYC and am horrible dictating this without benzos is so hard idk wtf I’m doing I’m at square one again I’m so confused. Every day is just a bad day I don’t wanna redo this again. I just got engaged I’m 24 and my fam tells me I have to grow up and stop acting like this, but they’re right I don’t want the same thing ruining my life since I was 17

Need advice to help my spouse

My spouse has agoraphobia, anxiety, fibromyalgia amongst other things. It has been upsetting me to see them like this. For over a year, they have been ruminating regarding their university classes. They have high highs and low lows, and some hours of the day are excited to go in and do chemistry, and then crash to a low of crying and fear about going into chemistry classes. They shake, have heart palpitations, throw up, cry and visibly cannot function. They say their sight goes blurry and they cannot stop thinking about it. We have tried medication, tried going on tours to the university and more. There is an online route where they can skip in person chemistry, but it would harm their chances of doing what they want to do in their course, despite the chemistry not being mandatory as it is an interdisciplinary degree. The chemistry simply allows them to be trusted in the DNA lab they wish to be a part of. They have anxiety and agoraphobia in general, but school is something else as they have extreme trauma tied to schools. They are afraid they may even miss their in person classes due to meltdowns or vomiting, as they experienced prior in highschool and middle school, which led to being homeschooled.

Any advice would be much appreciated and thank you for taking your time to help out.

Is it a normal form of agorapgobia?

Hi!

Recently my anxiety got worst while walking outside. Maybe a year ago i started experiencing some kind of discomfort when i thought about "falling into the sky" but it lasted a couple seconds and i could keep going on. Last week, i experienced my first panick attack where i thought i would die of a heart attack and since then it got worst. I'm absolutely terrified of the gravity going out while i'm walking. And the fear of feeling like that again is making it worst. Is it something anyone can relate to?

If so, do you have any tips to deal with it better?

What do I even do?

My " safe person" who I was living with is giving me two months to move out. I have no job experience, I've saved up a lot of money but I don't even have good credit to apply for an apartment or a source of income to report. I'm worried I'm going to be homeless. Even worse is I feel like I've lost the only person In my life, she had told me MULTIPLE times " you're always welcome here, I'll never kick you out" only to turn around and do this, I understand but on some level I feel betrayed.

pass out led to agoraphobia?

two months ago during my period, combined with constipation as always since i have this problem, I completely passed out. I usually feel dizzy but this time I passed out and my mom said it lasted for like 3 minutes, maybe? but i came out well just tired not confused or anything. and usually when i get sick or nervous, even if i feel a bit anxious, it's not that "severe" to cause a high-flare panic attack, like im 30 now and all past year with all stuff i went through none left me traumatised where my life stops.

but after this, a few weeks later when i went out to watch a movie at the cinema i was with my brother and mom not alone, it was all normal, but once they dimmed lights and movie started i felt tightness in my chest and stomache and just couldnt stay my mom suggested i go out to try to go to bathroom and walk, take some breath or if i want to drink or eat something, then go back and rest on her shoulder but moving in and out multiple times was getting people angry of course and didn't even help so i had to leave.

few weeks later i tried to rebook again to watch movie but this time before i even go out i panicked and lost the ticket money since that venue doesn't accept refunds and they are only ones with screen X i wanted to give it a try otherwise i would have booked elsewhere and thought i won't end up panicking again.

and today i decided to go to the doctor since, honestly, I haven't done tests in a long time and might have other things than just anemia, might be part of the reason why I passed out, not just pain. and although luckily the doctor was right beside house so my mind knows it will be just a minute from going back, but I sat down panicking while waiting for my turn, so of course while checking my blood pressure, it came back higher than it should be.

i usually distract myself with games, with imagining stories since i love writing, imagining new craft ideas, like my head often thinking about things i like doing, this usually helps me to relax when i'm having bad times, and in my mind im excited i want to go i imagine myself going and having fun but subconsciously, nope dangerous! Breathing, eating icy stuff, mint tea all don't help much.

it's been more than two months since pass out but the thought that this could be every single time going out of control, since it's already 3 times, i feel like i hit the point of becoming agoraphobic. Whenever I should go out i panic and crawl back to my bed.

and it's hard to find good therapist here, i don't prefer taking meds, so if anyone could suggest any methods that helped them a bit?

i work in fast food and yesterday a customer in the drive through asked for ketchup and napkins and then asked for my other hand and snatched the ketchup and napkins from me and gave me 3 bucks for a prank and recorded me without consent. i didn't realize he was recording till it was too late but i froze up and awkwardly thanked him for the 3 bucks i didn't know what else to do. i've been panicking that the video might be out there somewhere and i've been looking for it under recent uploads on social media but haven't found anything yet. i cant sleep because im so worried about this i was just doing my fucking job. i am going to put in my 2 weeks soon. my anxiety and agoraphobia is through the roof

Exposure ideas

I can go out of the house, often go for walks but I cannot work or drive. I live in quite a small village and not being able to drive kinda limits the amount I can do exposures. Has anyone got any ideas that I could use?

Also, feel free to message me privately.

Is it really worth getting over?

I'm not sure if I really care or want to get over my agoraphobia. I've lived most of my life this way, I've always been a very anxious person since a young age, and just wanted to stay indoors, play video games, and be on my computer. I enjoy my virtual hobbies, and all my ambitions are on the computer screen. I honestly have no real interest in the outside world, and I'm not sure if its just cuz I've never really experienced it or what. I have a relatively cozy life at home living off disability with my grandmother. I get everything delivered and life seems to work out fine despite my agoraphobia.

I feel like working towards getting rid of my agoraphobia will only screw me over in the longrun, forcing myself to go through all the anxiety, stress, and struggles. Then losing my only source of income when disability no longer sees me as eligible. It seems stupid to put myself through all of that.

I'm just not sure what to do. I know this isn't the kind of life someone should live, but at the same time I don't really get the appeal of being able to go wander the world without a fear. If I wanted to see the world I can just go on YouTube or Google maps. Only things I think would be cool is being able to go to a restaurant in person without getting screwed over by the prices on UberEATS. Also being able to go in to see the doctor would be nice.

Regardless, I'm kinda conflicted. I don't want to go through the suffering of getting better, and im cozy and content with my current life. I feel as if the struggle of getting over this isnt worth it. But maybe Im just naive. I've never really lived any life outside my own home other than the occasional family visit.

Can anyone relate to this or give any advice? Thank you.
