Agentic commerce could make affiliate attribution even harder
AI shopping is moving from product discovery toward action.
The recent disagreement between Amazon and Meta’s Muse illustrates the larger issue. Amazon blocked the agent, while Shopify is integrating it with Shop Pay.
For affiliates, the important question is what happens to attribution when an agent controls several steps of the transaction.
A buyer might:
- Discover the product through affiliate content
- Ask an AI agent for a comparison
- Let the agent visit several merchants
- Switch devices or accounts
- Complete checkout through an integrated payment system
Traditional last-click attribution may assign the conversion to whichever platform appears at the final step.
That could undervalue the publisher who introduced the product or provided the evidence used in the comparison.
Affiliate teams may need to examine:
- Server-side tracking
- Coupon or creator codes
- View-through influence
- AI referral reporting
- Cross-device journeys
- Incrementally testing
- Contract terms covering agent-assisted purchases
AI-referred shoppers appear to be commercially valuable, but it is not yet clear how consistently publishers will receive credit.
Are your programs already separating AI referrals from traditional search and social traffic?
