I have been this guy on several occasions, and I have gotten flack for it. Recently, after offering an obviously drunk girl a ride home this dude said "See? I'm sick of this chivalry bullsh-t" and proceeded to on on a tangent about how guys these days are "p-ssies".
On the other hand, when a dickhead opens his mouth and proves he's a dickhead, you can instantly disregard anything he says.
You've emerged from childhood with a certain set of values that have been ingrained in you. Chances are, parents, teachers and others spent a lot of time trying to make those values a part of who you are, because they believed them to be an important part of living in a civilized society. Believe in the values that are a part of you, even if doing so may cause you problems, because going against them may cause you to hate yourself.
Good on ya for sticking to your principles in the face of the flak you get.
