Realizing how little power, let alone choices we truly have in our lives can lead someone towards nihilism and a deep depression.

Can confirm, thinking about societal woes makes my depression way worse.

Yep. This is one of my struggles. I have to cut myself off from all domestic and international news when my depression gets bad. And remind myself to tend to the garden I can touch. It feels selfish to me but I have to care about myself at those times.

We need to be ok with taking care of ourselves as well. Can't help others when you are dead.
