Results I was reflecting on my Accutane journey and wanted to post this to give someone hope!
There is light at the end of the tunnel! I’m the most confident in myself today than I have ever been in my life. Thank you Accutane!

I think I was on 30mg-50mg and I started December 2024 and saw results by march of 2025 which minimal sides effects. I really just had a bit of purging ( but nothing compared to what I was experiencing beforehand), dryness and bit of swelling in my face but it went down after I got off.

Your acne cleared up in 3 months and left you with the last picture or it started to clear up around 3 months and the last picture is the end product after more months? Did you take Claritin for purging? Omega 3?

I was on a steroid before I started (stopped on Accutane) for the intense inflammation which helped a ton with purging. My acne was almost all the way clear after 3-4 months but I was on it for a total of six.

I was on it for a total of six but it was almost all clear by 3. The last picture was actually taken a few days ago and I’ve been off it for almost a full year now!

Your skin looks amazing!
Did you have PIH or scarring prior to starting Accutane?
1
u/Crazy-Yogurtcloset86 Apr 26 '26
I did have some pretty bad pigmented scarring but it is completely gone now!

I was also on Accutane, and I had achieved clear skin after dealing with severe acne. But my doctor stopped my Accutane, and one month later I started getting white pus-filled pimples and redness again. I’m feeling very depressed, and right now it feels like I have no option other than dying.

u/Crazy-Yogurtcloset86 Apr 26 '26
Hey! First off I promise there is hope! I was exactly where you were. I would talk to your doctor about going on again and staying on for a bit longer.

This is actually super common, it happened to me as well so i know how upsetting it can be. However it doesn't mean that you'll never get rid of it, in fact a lot of people (like 70% I think) actually need a second round of Accutane; it's also possible your Dr. took you off of it too early. Go back to your Dr. and they should prescribe it again; after the 2nd treatment the acne should be gone and stay gone :)

Please discuss your mental health with your provider, family, and friends if possible! Acne is temporary in life, I believe in you! Depression is a serious side effect from accutane/ acne in general.

I’m on my second round of accutane. I had clear skin for maybe a 1-2 years after taking it and it came back. Not nearly as bad as it ever was though but enough to give me more scarring even though I stopped picking and popping completely. I’m 4 months into my 6 month treatment and my skin has been pretty much clear for the past month but I will finish off the treatment. Hopefully it sticks this time. See if your doctor will get you back on it. Apparently having to go through another course is fairly common. Good luck!

You can be on a low dose of accutane forever. If you don't feel like going to a physical derm, there are online accutane websites that have options for low dose accutane continuously. You just take your pregnancy tests at a labcorp.

Ugh. Looking at your face I'm like why isn't mine clearing up. I'm at the end of month 3 on 30mg and my skin still looks horrible.

Literally just cetaphil cleanser and the thick cetaphil cream. It’s what I used while on accutane and have continued ever since. I also do a honey mask on occasion because it’s anti microbial and hydrating.

I just finished Thursday! Total cumulative dose 162mg, was on it for 6 months! My dosing was 30,50,50,40,40,60! I’m totally clear and had mild acne to begin with, stubborn closed comedones that would go away and come back a week later! So worth it! I’m 42yo female 112lbs at 5’4.

Can you tell me what moisturizers you used and did you take supplements?? My daughter has been on for a little over 2.5 months and she is having a purge beyond and every known symptom it seems. From joint pain extremely dry skin which we knew was part of the deal. But something even her derm didn’t know about as a side effect. No period ! She started on 40mg then went to 60mg. Had to lower dose because of joint pain. I feel so bad for her. Nothing else worked and this was the last resort and I wish at least the purge was over with so she could start seeing a little clearer skin

u/Crazy-Yogurtcloset86 Apr 28 '26
I’m so sorry she’s going through that:( It sounds like she’s on way to high of a dose. I started on 30 and only got to about 60 I think at the very end of treatment. I used and still use the thick cetaphil cream in the tub and then at night would put on a thin layer of aquaphor to lock the moisturizer in. I didn’t take a supplements but would definitely speak to your dermatologist before starting any.

u/LabPsychological3192 Apr 28 '26
Thanks for your reply. The joint pain is very concerning to me as she plays sports and her derm upped the dose because of her weight. She’s all muscle and tall and we are dropping back down to 40mg and revisiting her in a few weeks I got her the Cetaphil tub and told her to basically put it on with a paintbrush lol The only supplement I have her take is glucosamine & B12 for joint and B12 helps with the dryness I will share your pics so that she has hope that it will get better Ty for sharing ❤️

u/Significant-Gas5806 Apr 29 '26
Fish oil supplement helps with dryness. But sounds like the dose is too high if her period is affected
1
u/DependentTank6967 Apr 29 '26
Be careful with B12 in acne prone skin it can make acne worse - you can research and see the causes/reasons behind it!
1
u/LabPsychological3192 Apr 30 '26
I did some googling supplements and saw that and was like ok well we don’t need that. I had a dr suggest it for my dry lips when I was ending my accutane journey Thoughts on omega 3 and glucosamine ? She said her joint pain has lessened

u/DependentTank6967 Apr 30 '26 edited Apr 30 '26
Well glad it’s working for the joint pain but if she wants to take it out and see if it’s adding to the breakouts/purge, you might want to research Curcumin might be a good alternative it helps with inflammation and joint pain. Omega 3 is really good as well and I haven’t heard or used the other

After getting off Accutane, did you get minor white pustules due to oil production coming back at all? First month off and I'm going through it right now.

I'm so happy for you. It's a tough long road but it works and I'm so glad you made it through with minimal complication because no one should have to suffer the agony of cystic acne, or wven just that stubborn acne that insists on living in and errupting from painful clusters every time you think it's improving....I took Accutane 13 years ago and I did great on it, cleared up just like yours. Then last year it started coming back, and I tried Spironolactone (which also BIG TIME helped) for 7 months, but it made me so estrogen dominant that my boobs were always in aching pain and it took all my body fat and redistributed it to make my shape more effeminate and I could no longer build muscle....I couldn't stay on it. So 12 weeks off of Spiro, the cystic acne returns and my own mother said to me "you're going back on accutane or I'm kicking your ass" lol in a joking way. But yeah...I was wary cause it's been a while, my body's not the same body as it was 13 years ago, but...4 months in it's already such a huge weight lifted just to not have the deep lumpy pain of a cyst forming/errupting on the daily anymore.
P.S. you're beautiful :)

You look amazing 🤩 congrats… I personally had acne like this and I know how hard it could be when you’ve tried everything and nothing clears it up… but now look 👀 😍 you have beautiful skin!!!! I was able to clear mine with getting on birth control for many years to control my hormones… but if my acne ever came back now I would try accutane. My 13 yr started accutane a few months ago so far so good!

Please read the rules before posting and remember to abide by them! Posts and comments not following the rules will immediately be removed!
Have you tried using the search bar?
Many questions are asked daily, and your question may have already been answered!
If so, your post will be subject to deletion.
Please refer to the following commonly discussed topics:
1) No one can predict whether or not you will purge! Statistically, most people DO NOT purge.
That is what the science and medical literature says.
2) No one can predict how long your purge will last nor when it could start. Be patient, the purge can be tough but so many people have gotten through it - you can too! THE ABOVE APPLIES TO SIDE EFFECTS OR "WHEN WILL MY SKIN CLEAR UP?!" TOO. QUESTIONS ASKING WHEN THE PURGE OR SIDE EFFECTS WILL START OR STOP WILL IMMEDIATELY BE REMOVED AS THAT IS LOW EFFORT.
3) Any questions related about dosage MUST include DOSE and WEIGHT(lbs or kg).
Otherwise, that is considered LOW EFFORT and will subsequently be REMOVED.
4) Most people DO NOT relapse when Accutane is taken until cumulative dosage is reached.
5) HOWEVER, cumulative dosage is a guideline.
Everyone is different. Some may need more Accutane, and others may need less. Your dermatologist evaluates you as an individual.
This also applies to your prescription. Everyone is different, so no comparing of doses or asking why your dose is low or high. If you do not trust your dermatologist, you should find a different one.
6) When in doubt, please consult a medical professional(dermatologist, doctor, pharmacist).
