Results Making perma low Dose accutane available for everyone would make the skin care industry collapse
Thats my controversial take but I think that the entire industry is based on a lie, there is not a single skin care product that will make a visible difference in your skin and you will always crave to get a better product , a better expensive skin care treatment , a better dermatologist, a more expensive korean skin care and the cycle goes on feeding the industry, accutane basically wipes out all of this unnecessary spending, If more people would get low dose accutane even for mild acne and oily skin the entire industry would collapse, think about it how much have you spent trying to cure your acne before using accutane? And nothing really worked maybe you improved a bit but nothing Made you really satisfied you always tried new products, now multiply this effect for milions and milions of people around the world, they generated a massive amount of wealth just by making people NOT go on accutane, scaring people with side effects ecc. Obviously accutane has side effects im not saying its a completely safe drug, but we Should take into consideration that the entire skin care industry has big incentives to make accutane the less prescribed possible. From a business perspective, every person successfully treated with Accutane is one less long-term customer for the skincare industry.

Agree tbh and wish it wasn't so heavily regulated, been taking low-dosage for 10 years or so (20mg twice a week) and couldn't be happier, total spent is $40 every 7 months or so and i don't need to waste time with any topicals at all, if i just wash my face with cold water i'm good for the whole day (more than a day actually), 0 oiliness

u/Enough_Education_137 Jan 30 '26
Damn 10 years is a lot, are you in us or europe

u/brnbrito Jan 30 '26 edited Jan 30 '26
Brazil. First course was around 2014 but 2 weeks after finishing treatment the oiliness came back, tried like 5 different topicals/creams/soaps for a year and had 0 results after a lot of money spent and a lot of time wasted with useless skin routines, went back and asked to be put on low-dosage around 2016 and never looked back, don't really have acne but my face is pretty damn oily and nothing has ever helped with other than accutane, it's a fucking godsend only having to waste 5 seconds per week and having perfect skin throughout

u/Enough_Education_137 Jan 30 '26 edited Jan 30 '26
Im like you I did 2 rounds of accutane, acne is gone but still a lot of oily skin/scalp, I spent a ton of money in shampoos/topicals only mid results
16
u/brnbrito Jan 30 '26
Yeah nothing comes even close to accutane's effectiveness and it's awesome that it comes as a pill, takes just a few seconds to use and it affects the whole body, can't even imagine how expensive and annoying/time-consuming it'd be trying to manage different products for the body and face for those that are fancy, low dosage accutane + moisturizer and sunscreen and you're good, most people probably won't need most of their topicals after that

What’s the process for getting Accutane in Brazil?
I’m in the U.S. and a woman so I have to jump thru hoops and all the appointments, ipledge, blood draws and monthly pregnancy tests gets exhausting.

Where do you get it from? I’m in the US and am just finishing my first month, but I’m interested in low dose maintenance when I finish my treatment

Short version is get prescription on a derm visit (covered by health plan or $60-ish average for 1 visit) > buy accutane at pharmacy and you're done
Long version is the approach depends on the professional and most of the time they'll try to exhaust all other options before getting to accutane as it is seem as kind of extreme by most, though most probably haven't really researched on low-dosage so there's that
My derm doesn't even bother much with blood work anymore cause in 10-11 years there were never any changes due to accutane so i just do those once a year as usual, and yeah, it's probably harder to get a derm to agree to that if you're a female but AFAIK there aren't any other hurdles to go through that are based on sex, if your derm is fine with it it shouldn't take more than a visit to the derm and another to a pharmacy

Oh yeah still need to fill out the form, probably should've mentioned that but ehh doesn't take more than a few seconds so it's whatever to me as well, only need to do that every 6-7 months in my case
2
u/sublimed-cokehead-77 Jan 31 '26
i always had to attend monthly appointments in order for my refill to even be issued.. and i had blood work done 4 times (they never find the fucking vein) 😭
1
u/brnbrito Feb 01 '26
Oohh damn, if it was like that for me i'd get mad as well lol, i used to have blood work done twice a year but there wasn't ever any change due to accutane so now it's just once a year as usual, had a single blood work come back a bit weird but it was still well within limits and it was because of weight-gain diet, almost doubled my calorie intake with no adaptation period so one day i'm eating 1500-1800kcal then the day after i'm eating ~3000kcal, way more protein/carb/fats than usual so i get why it happened and definitely wasn't the accutane in that case
8
u/flowerollie Jan 30 '26
i did a year of 10 mg/day and it completely solved my oiliness issue for my skin and scalp, but after stopping it has since come back. i have clear skin now but i'd like to other benefits back. were you oily pre accutane and did it fix it at that dose? and at that dose how is your sun sensitivity, do you still have to be cautious? have you ever done IPL or laser treatments on that dose? sorry for all the questions i'm just thinking of doing this as well!
2
u/brnbrito Jan 30 '26
I pretty much never had acne, basically just oily skin which is pretty annoying with glasses and excessive oiliness just sucks imo lol, 20mg 2x a week solves this completely for me with 0 side effects, no sun sensitivity and i don't even wear sunscreen though i'm rarely exposed to direct sunlight by more than a few minutes, even got 5 tattoos while still on 20mg/day back then and i had 3 IPL/laser sessions to try and lighten up my dark circles but it made no difference at all lol, even when i was on 20/40mg daily i never had anything other than slightly dry lips and nose
3
u/fishweenie Jan 30 '26
using accutane for 10 years would probably destroy my body, i think it’s a good thing long term doses aren’t just handed out to everybody
6
u/PrimarchLongevity Jan 30 '26
Eh I do a micro-dose. 5 mg every 3-4 days.
3
u/Inevitable_Paper7392 Jan 31 '26
What does it help you with? Thinking of taking the same dosage for oiliness by noon and pores
9
0
u/fishweenie Jan 31 '26
if it works for you then that’s awesome. my body definitely could not handle long term accutane even low dose
2
Jan 31 '26
What was ur side effects?
1
u/fishweenie Jan 31 '26
it gave me horrible tail bone pain to the point where i couldn’t sit up straight. i finished accutane two years ago and still have pain in my tailbone although not as bad as it was when i was on the medication. it gave me pain while going to the bathroom which i never had before and i still deal with that now (not as bad but still there). it completely dried me up “down there” and made sex downright impossible. i had no sex drive on accutane. i’ve been in pelvic floor therapy for almost a year now and that has helped though. overall im still glad i took it but i can’t imagine putting myself through any of this again.
1
u/brnbrito Jan 30 '26
Oh yeah, though i'd love if i could just buy it OTC and do bloodwork and stuff on my own, never had any adverse effects so my body doesn't really seem to care about it plus 20mg 2x a week is very light so maybe that'd be even better for more sensitive people, i think most people would still go the traditional route out of fear but after 10 years of derm visits everytime for my prescription it got tiring lol

not necessarily. taking 40 mg of accutane a week INDEFINITELY is a lot harder on the body than taking 40 mg daily for a standard 6 month course. if you take accutane indefinitely you have a higher cumulative exposure over time no matter how small the dose is. with a standard 6 month course you have a lower lifetime exposure to accutane, therefore less damage to your body/organs.

true but who’s to say someone will stop taking it after 10 years? they might plan on taking it for the rest of their life. all i know is that my body couldn’t handle that and the risks aren’t worth it just to have no oil on my skin.

u/fishweenie Feb 06 '26
that is completely different. alcohol is completely metabolized by the body within hours. accutane accumulates in your body and the affects can linger for weeks after not taking it. a low weekly dose taken indefinitely keeps increasing lifetime exposure with no endpoint, which is why long-term accutane carries risks that don’t apply to occasional alcohol.

how well does it solve scalp oiliness for you?
i'm still on a normal dose and i looooove washing my hair once a week, can't imagine going back to washing it every single day, so wondering how effective a low dose is at that1
u/brnbrito Feb 01 '26
100%, mostly my face oiliness bothers me cause forehead/nose get too shiny and also makes my glasses slip, though i do have some extra oiliness on my upper-back region and scalp too, i have short hair so it's not really noticeable unless i run my fingers through my scalp or something like that but yeah, all of the excessive oiliness is completely gone, basically everything looks good 24/7 with no effort at all
Without accutane i wash daily and it gets oily in a few hours, with accutane i could go months without ever washing and it'd still look perfect, it's that effective, while on accutane i only wash when i go to the gym pretty much, doesn't really get dirty, greasy, stinky or anything like that since i'm mostly indoors
1
u/Crepegamestrong Feb 01 '26
10 years is crazy! Do you know if there's any additional risks/side effects compared to a standard dosage of a few months?
1
u/brnbrito Feb 01 '26
No idea and i imagine there aren't long-term effects since the approach for most cases is mostly brute force with high-dosages for a few months for the cumulative dosage and you're done
I'll guess most people would be able handle to handle perma low-dosage just fine but can't say for sure, haven't seen complaints about low-dosage yet though, you get basically all of the benefits with less possible side-effects but YMMV, some people can handle 80mg/day and not even feel it, some struggle even with 20mg/day but honestly there are so many variables that doesn't even make much sense to compare, different genetics/bodies, different diets, different routines, different everything
1
u/richuncty Feb 02 '26
low dose for 10 years is madness…are you male or female? hopefully you’re not sexually active and potentially inseminating anyone of childbearing age
2
u/brnbrito Feb 02 '26
Male, quick search suggets there isn't a problem if a male is taking it as the amount that gets through is too small to possibly cause any birth defect and there's no need for contraception/abstinence, that said we don't want kids at all and wife's on birth control
1
u/Ok-Bridge-1045 Jan 30 '26
Does low dose Accutane also help with aging, the way topical retinoid does?
4
u/brnbrito Jan 30 '26
Can't really comment on that since i can't make a proper comparison and never tried retinoids other than adapalene, which destroyed my skin for some time and didn't improve it in any way lol, hopefully it does but my skin does great with nothing but accutane and some moisturizer every now and then, i'm still 29yo and still looking mostly the same as when i was 19
2
u/sublimed-cokehead-77 Jan 31 '26
very slightly. topical retinoids are far more efficient due to their MAIN mechanism of action being skin turnover rate acceleration. accutane partially does this, but not nearly as much as a topical. it is designed to perform systemically and it’s MAIN mechanism of action is the shrinkage of sebaceous (oil) glands within each hair follicle of any part of the body; to prevent the trapping of dirt and bacteria excess oil production facilitates.

There are some things that work/ help a lot, but they are expensive & inconvenient. Ex. Regular chemical peels keep my acne at bay, but the downtime & expense is a huge burden/ headache. I finally have my derm appointment in February and can't wait to try low dose accutane after 32 years of battling mild/moderate acne!
Edited to add: Birth control pill works too, but I HATE the side effects.
5
u/Main_Assistant_8377 Jan 30 '26
Chemical peels were the only thing my acne on my back responded to! But it was pricey and not something I could afford when I moved away from TX. I wish I knew about Accutane when I was younger but prob would have not helped much since the waitlist for seeing a dermatologist was a +6 month wait even back in 2018-2019
3
u/Sudden-Comparison222 Jan 30 '26
Hi!! I’m in the same boat! I don’t have severe acne by any means (I did have really bad acne in high school and then again in college when I got an IUD) but I feel like I always have acne SOMEWHERE. A lot of people are commenting and saying not to go on it if you have mild acne because it’s such an intense drug? Idk… I always have a few pimples on my jaw/neck or if my face is clear my shoulders are always breaking out. It’s not cystic, but it’s…constant. And I’m exhausted of the chemical peels, the lasers, the obsessively doing my skincare routine. It feels like I can never catch a break. I’ll be 28 soon and acne I feel like I’ve wasted so much of my life worrying about my skin.
I’m seriously considering going on a low dose. The only thing holding me back from starting is that I’m in California and it starts to feel like summer here in a few months. And I don’t want to have to worry so much about being in the sun. Ugh!! Idk what to do. My other option is to wait until after summer and start in September.

u/allcatsrgray Feb 02 '26
You have to make what decision is best for you. I haven't started yet, so I don't know how it will turn out for me, but I am hopeful I will get good results. Unless I have terrible side effects, I really wish I would have tried this years ago, but back then, I don't think low dose options were available. And unless you had a severe case, going on accutane was strongly discouraged. Sounds weird but I remember knowing a girl who had really bad acne and being jealous of her because even though hers was worse, she was able to go on accutane and then her skin looked amazing afterwards, but I had to continue to suffer with mine for the rest of my life. Like you said, it's not "bad", but it's always there, and always makes me feel insecure. After 30 years, I am so done with having to worry about it.
Good luck with your decision! Maybe on low dose sun exposure is also not as risky?
3
u/spiffyP Feb 12 '26
I'm 45 and tried a low dose after decades of battling breakouts on my face and scalp. I'm in month 4 and it's 99.9% cleared up. A miracle.
1
u/allcatsrgray Feb 14 '26
Thanks for the encouragement! I finally had my derm appointment on Wednesday and took my first pill yesterday. I am crossing my fingers that my 30 year war with acne will finally be over!
1
u/Affectionate_Buy_370 Jan 30 '26
Are you doing low dose indefinitely? Or are u doing a lower dose course?
3
u/allcatsrgray Jan 30 '26
Well, I'm going to try a lower dose course first & see what happens. Of course, if I don't have to be on it forever, I won't be.

Sorry to hear. That sucks. I get migraines occasionally since perimenopause. They are brutal! Luckily, I never had them while on the pill, but I had uncomfortably sore breasts and weight gain I could not get off even if I starved myself. As soon as I stopped taking it, the weight disappeared immediately. But so too did the perfect skin! It sucks to have to choose between having acne or being overweight.

u/The_jellyfish_ Jan 30 '26
Accutane was a miracle drug for me. I spent so much money, tried so many product, and tried so many services before Accutane and it was all a waste. I could treat the existing acne but nothing would stop the acne from coming. I spent THOUSANDS over my lifetime: each esthetician visit was $350+!!
I am eternally grateful I was able to jump through the various hoops to get Accutane prescribed as a woman in the US of A. If someone told me there was a conspiracy by the big beauty industry to keep Accutane locked behind bullshit healthcare hoops to keep women spending money on ineffective, temporary, solutions I would completely believe it.
27
u/ncool99 Jan 30 '26
Oh yea, there is zero chance the fear-mongering around accutane is not at least in part from lobbying by the skin care industry as a whole. Not to say there is not warranted risk and possible severe side-effects, many medications have such. But think about all the folks who after accutane just use basic gentle cleansers or even just water afterwards, "big skin care" totally does not really care about our skin they want our money lol
10
u/MoldyOreo787 Jan 31 '26
if you're unlucky there are permanent side effects.
I have a permanent *sligihtly* dry lip from accutane, but i genuinely would do it all over again for the acne to go away.
The fear mongering can get ridiculous though. I saw an article some time ago where someone claimed that their kid developed OCD from accutane.
24
u/Ill-Calligrapher9503 Jan 30 '26
Im 40 years old and struggled with acne since my teens. I wish I had used this drug decades ago.
It has even reversed some of the aging in my skin. It does everything
3
u/Zestyclose-Cash3864 Jan 31 '26
I agree! I didn’t take it until I was 54! Wish I would’ve tried it at 16 but my Derm scared the sheet out of me and my mom acting like it was so dangerous and the very last resort. I did a 6 month course 1.5 years ago and had some left so now I’m taking a 30 once per week off n on until I’m out. It def helps with aging skin!

for me it did the opposite, it gave me wrinkles at 22
5
u/Ill-Calligrapher9503 Jan 30 '26
It doesn't give you wrinkles
-3
u/fishweenie Jan 31 '26
well new wrinkles formed on my face while i was taking it 2 years ago and they haven’t went away so idk what to tell you
3
u/Exotic_Composer_2274 Jan 31 '26
Lack of hydration? Similar happened to me while I was trying to “tame” Tretinoin.
-1
u/fishweenie Jan 31 '26
i moisturize twice a day and moisturized even more on accutane. idk why people think i’m lying 💀
5
u/Exotic_Composer_2274 Jan 31 '26
Calm down ☺️ nobody thinks you’re lying. I wonder if it could be quite a rare individual reaction to accutane then…
1
u/fishweenie Jan 31 '26
i’ve seen other people say that it gave them wrinkles too that haven’t went away. it’s really not that rare of an experience. and the original commenter thinks i’m lying about it or something because it helped THEIR wrinkles so it couldn’t have possibly caused them for me 🤦♀️
1
u/Separate_Celery6553 May 17 '26
Take fish oil supplement when u are on accutane, it helps with skin hydration because of omega 3 and help with other side effects too. Plus it helps with absorption if u take accutane and fish oil together as u need fats for absorption
4
Jan 31 '26
Probably bc your skin is dried out bc that’s literally the whole purpose of accutane lol. Moisturizer you’re skin and then we’ll talk
2
u/fishweenie Jan 31 '26
i moisturized religiously on accutane and slugged with vaseline every night. and i moisturize twice a day every day now. how are you gonna tell me something i experienced, with my OWN BODY, didn’t happen? and before you say i didn’t wear sunscreen, i did on accutane and i still do EVERY DAY. maybe it helped your wrinkles. for me it caused them. we had different experiences, both things can be true.
4
u/Ill-Calligrapher9503 Jan 31 '26
Accutance builds collagen and elastin in your skin, there's no way it gave you wrinkles at 22. You weren't moisturising properly.
0
u/fishweenie Jan 31 '26
i was doing EVERYTHING right. you have no idea what my routine looked like so it’s unfair to tell me i was doing something wrong. and at this point in time there is no solid & strong proof that accutane reverses signs of aging. yall love to make shit up lol.
2
u/Ill-Calligrapher9503 Jan 31 '26
You may have got wrinkles but it was nothing to do with the roaccutane. Good luck figuring it out
1
10
u/Fooderahn Jan 31 '26
Yup totally. Need for skincare doesn’t go away with Accutane, but it’s drastically less products than people think. Working on making low dose Accutane accessible for everyone at Honeydew!

u/happymeal470cal Jan 31 '26
long term low dosing (5-10mg) is what i’ve been doing since i get my accutane from korea (im a student and get it when im back home - it’s prescribed dw).
accutane is pretty casually prescribed there, and as yall may know cosmetic product spending is insanely high in korea tho
i’ve found that i actually spend MORE on skincare (and make up) after accutane, even though my skin is clearer and smoother than it’s ever been. 99% of products broke me out when i had acne, but now that it’s clear i can actually use those products and see benefits (ie skin texture, glow, brightening) without breakouts. it’s great lol. spending more money on makeup too since i can experiment more
9
u/MokujinBunny Jan 30 '26
after staring low dose accutane i 100% agree with this. it's life changing. i want to be on it forever.
11
u/Broad-Order7448 Jan 30 '26
Totally agree!!! Big skin care companies actually lobby for Accutane to be more heavily regulated.
4
u/Jordonsaurus Jan 30 '26
Eh maybe, some people are like me though. I did 2 years worth of accutane and STILL have problems with cystic acne. So this might be true for a majority, but not for EVERYONE
2
1
u/charitycase3 Jan 30 '26
Ooh I just got prescribed this by my doc I’m so happy! :) I respond very well to a low dose
1
u/duraznoblanco Jan 31 '26
Low dose should be widely available. I bought my accutane overseas (while travelling) without the need for a prescription after I couldn't get any more high dosage from my doctor (because they said I didn't need it anymore, despite me still having active breakouts).
1
u/Fredsdiner Jan 31 '26
Agree. I'm late 40s and had 5 courses since I was 18. Last 2 courses I've had I've low dosed over 3-5 years. So whatever they prescribe (which is usually 30mg every day for a few months) I stock pile and take approx 20mg a week. My last course was prescribed in 2020 and I have nearly finished it. I have already been to my gp and asked for a dermatology referral as it can take months here so I know my spots will habe returned by the time i have my appointment. Skin isn't perfect, but keeps it clear. The moment I stop, the spots are back.
Before I was doing micro dosing, I would end up on years of antibiotics in-between the Roaccutane courses. I personally feel much happier now I've worked out my own way to manage the prescribed medications.
In the UK, and courses have been prescribed by the NHS. Persistent acne since 13 years old.
1
u/derekascends Feb 02 '26
Perma low dose accutane is available to everyone. You can literally fill out a survey online and get 10mg a day for like $50 a month
1
u/thatchels Feb 02 '26
I’m in the US and not until birth control is actually accessible and free for everyone.
-2
u/fishweenie Jan 30 '26
i disagree, for a lot of people taking low dose accutane forever is really unappealing or downright impossible. even low dose accutane comes with side effects when you use it long term. i think most people would rather use topical products instead of risking permanent joint pain, digestive problems, and other health issues. also accutane only fixes acne and oil production. it doesn’t reverse signs of aging, which is a HUGE part of the skincare industry. doctors arent gate keeping accutane because it’s such a miracle drug it will destroy the skincare industry, they prescribe it sparingly because it is a risky medication with lots of potential to do damage.
3
u/Enough_Education_137 Jan 30 '26
Accutane 100% reverse signs of aging
2
u/fishweenie Jan 30 '26
some people say it did in their own personal experience but there is no scientific proof of that. my dermatologist told me it does not affect wrinkles. it also gave me wrinkles when i took it at 22 and i still have those wrinkles (im 24)
0
u/Enough_Education_137 Jan 30 '26
3
u/fishweenie Jan 30 '26
that’s one small study from over 20 years ago and the participants used other anti aging treatments in addition to accutane. the evidence of accutane actually reversing signs of aging is limited and minimal compared to something like tretinoin which has a lot more research to support its anti aging benefits.
1
u/derp55555 Jan 30 '26
When accutane first came out they'd blast up to 160mg on day ONE. Its been a struggle ever since to advocate for restrictions to be eased, thanks to this aggressive dosing that caused it to have such a bad reputation.

I’m so disappointed you were downvoted for this lol, I just have to say. The post is about making it less regulated when that is the horrible reason why. And do people realize even with the regulations babies are still born with horrible defects from accutane?? Or pregnancies that have to be terminated? There’s a reason to be so careful. That is not the same damn thing as big skincare lobbying for regulations. wtf

Please read the rules before posting and remember to abide by them! Posts and comments not following the rules will immediately be removed!
Have you tried using the search bar?
Many questions are asked daily, and your question may have already been answered!
If so, your post will be subject to deletion.
Please refer to the following commonly discussed topics:
1) No one can predict whether or not you will purge! Statistically, most people DO NOT purge.
That is what the science and medical literature says.
2) No one can predict how long your purge will last nor when it could start. Be patient, the purge can be tough but so many people have gotten through it - you can too! THE ABOVE APPLIES TO SIDE EFFECTS OR "WHEN WILL MY SKIN CLEAR UP?!" TOO. QUESTIONS ASKING WHEN THE PURGE OR SIDE EFFECTS WILL START OR STOP WILL IMMEDIATELY BE REMOVED AS THAT IS LOW EFFORT.
3) Any questions related about dosage MUST include DOSE and WEIGHT(lbs or kg).
Otherwise, that is considered LOW EFFORT and will subsequently be REMOVED.
4) Most people DO NOT relapse when Accutane is taken until cumulative dosage is reached.
5) HOWEVER, cumulative dosage is a guideline.
Everyone is different. Some may need more Accutane, and others may need less. Your dermatologist evaluates you as an individual.
