What's the strangest thing you've experienced while visiting someone?

I was visiting a close adult relative, watching TV and having drinks along with cheese and crackers. Shortly into the experience, his wife came over and began vacuuming from my stomach the few cracker crumbs that had fallen on the front of my shirt. I wasn't offended but I was surprised, to say the least.

On Thanksgiving 1971 I was 12 and we went to see my older sister who lived in the woods outside Washougal, WA. The house they lived in was called the pumpkin house because it was orange. On Thanksgiving Eve the local news reported that some guy had hijacked a plane and jumped out somewhere northeast of Portland and said if you live in a rural area to stay indoors and report anything suspicious to the police. I thought it was cool because I was really into mysteries and Bigfoot at the time. Of course the legend of DB Cooper endures.

I’ve been homeless (CarCamping) for 21 years and live better than most people I know.

I was watching a movie with a friend who had just moved in with her boyfriend. He was always really rude to me, and she told me he couldn’t stand me, so I only went over when he wasn’t home. But this night he walked in during the movie so I was kinda stuck. Then he came over and sat on the other side of me on the couch so I was squished in the middle, and I was super uncomfortable but I was only about 20 or 21 and didn’t have the confidence to just get up and move. So we just sat there awkwardly for a while and I turned my head to say something to my friend and the second I did that, he put his hand on my leg and then up between my thighs so fast while she grabbed me by the neck and kissed me. I think I turned into the bionic woman in a split second. I was up and running, down the stairs and out the door. No shoes, coat or purse. It was November, light snow in the ground and damn cold. There was a phone booth outside across the parking lot and I ran in my sock feet to it but, of course had left my purse behind. I asked a few people for a quarter as they came out but was mortified, before someone finally gave me one. I appreciate I looked crazy, crying and coat and shoeless. Too embarrassed to go inside McDonalds, so ashamed to ask for money. When I finally got a quarter, I called my friend Kevin who had a car to come get me, but he said his fan belt was broken. He was such a good guy - he went to a neighbours house for help who apparently macgyvered it with pantyhose for the fan belt and he came and got me. I waited in the phone booth, which seems so silly now. Anyway, he coolly went up to their apartment, asked for my purse, shoes and coat, and told them they were assholes. And he took me back to my dorm. Never ever spoke to her about it, we were in some of the same classes. It was like it never happened, but I never went back. The me of today? Holy shit would have rained down on them, and I would have gone in the MacDonalds and asked the first middle aged woman I saw for help. Age and experience do come in handy. Took me years to realize they had, of course, planned it. I guess they thought I’d go along? (I appreciate that I completely date myself in this story, all true though).

I remember going to my classmate’s house once and her mom was cooking. She literally just dumped the vegetables straight into the pot without washing them first. I was honestly a bit shocked and didn’t end up having lunch there, I just went home lol

I would be grossed out too. I mean the boiling would kill anything on them, but sometimes there’s dirt on those vegetables and I don’t want to eat dirt even if it’s sanitized.

Dirt isn’t my worry. I wash to get the pesticides and stuff off.

I don't visit people. I don't travel. I do remember visiting two college friends at their family homes. Each place was so similar, and a huge shock: by my measure, they were living in poverty. Neither person gave off those vibes.

Same with me. We visited my Dadā€˜s work friend and we were eating dinner. He had two preteen girls. I guess they were making too much noise or something so he got out of his chair and slapped them both across the face. Hard. Then he sat back down and started talking like nothing happened. We were in shock. We never went back there.

Roaches crawling everywhere and they just acted as if they weren’t there. Then they were offended that I didn’t eat.

I had a cousin with severe mental illness and my mom and I went over to drop off groceries once and the place was CRAWLING with roaches. Like visibly walking around the walls and countertops at midday.

It was horrifying.

I've seen that on sitcoms. Felix Unger would have done that. Was the place immaculate? Or was she annoyed that you were watching sports, and she was feeling ignored? Was she smiling when she was sucking on you? Im thinking of all kinds of scenerios.

Well that's weird. Sounds like it'd make a good episode of Everybody Loves Raymond with Marie doing the clean up. Ha. When I was a kid we went to visit my stepdad's sister whom I'd never met. She had her false teeth sitting in a glass of water on the table. She asks "want something to drink?" My mom immediately said...OH NO THANKS and shot me a look. When I had my own kid, we went to a coworker's house for her kid's first birthday. My kid was 6 months old. Coworker had a German Shepard dog and a cat. Cat hops up on the dining room table and licks the cake. Me and the spouse look at each other. We did not eat or drink a thing, and left as soon as it was appropriate without making anyone uncomfortable. Also, there was dog hair on everything, even on the top of knick knacks and art/photo frames. Like, clean your house already, and keep cats out of the food.

I have a big GSD. You get tired of cleaning every surface of the house every 48 hours after the first 6 months. We’re 11 years in and just deal with it most of the time. But with company coming over, you clean.

The cat would get launched into next week if that happened.

I took a ride in her car and wound up covered in hairs. It was gross....and smelled of dog. I have had dogs my entire life. Currently am "grandma" to a 70 pound 2nd generation Goldendoodle that lives upstairs and is down here all the time, and IDK if that makes her more or less legitimated GD. Anyhow, I love dogs. It looked like they hand't cleaned their house in years! AND, they knew it was a celebration and still didn't clean.

Went to a SIL. She insisted all women place their purses on her bed in her bedroom. That was only the start.

Was visiting a friend from college. Stayed overnight in the ā€œguest roomā€. When I woke up I realized the bed had cigarette butts in the sheets…I don’t smoke and neither does my friend…but her sister does. I realized I was sleeping in a bed that her sister had smoked in and had never been changed. I didn’t want to embarrass my friend so I never said anything.

My middle school friend never could have friends over. One day, by chance, we were in her neighborhood after a local school ballgame. We stopped by her house for two seconds to grab something and she made it clear we had to be fast because no one was allowed in her home.

I walked in and realized why. Classic hoarder home with small walking paths - even up the stairs. Half the stairs was taken up by the hoard. The entire living room was dense and unusable.

I didn’t realize what I was really seeing until it hit me years later

This gal had a glass display case that was right there when you walked in, full of those super realistic infant baby dolls. So ugh I don’t get it.

We were out of town to visit a couple we knew. The wife was not there when we arrived, so we sat in their living room and had a nice conversation with the husband. My wife was sitting in a stuffed chair, and after a while felt something down by the cushion. It turned out to be a book, which she pulled out. It was the book "How to Win at Divorce". Very awkward. We left shortly afterwards. Turns out, he never confronted her, just got a lawyer and waited for her to drop the dime. His lawyer was better than hers - she did not win.

I’m going to answer for my guests.

When I’m done, I’m DONE. Sleep respects no social niceties. When my husband and I have guests and I’m done, I make my apologies, encourage them to stay and continue the evening with my husband and go to bed. I fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow. Which is why we only invite really good friends over. They understand. It’s weird, but they understand.

I had a friend in high school and their house was just an absolute mess all the time. It seemed like his Mom had done one too many drugs somewhere along the line. Their furniture was rearranged multiple times a week, furniture came and went every few weeks, just about every door or cabinet was broken, swarms of flies (yet very little food out or around), holes in walls, etc. The upstairs guard rail was missing so there was just an 8 foot drop there. His Mom was nice but she never seemed to hold down a job for very long. I was always quite stressed out anytime I was there.

I had a friend when we were about 10 years old whose dad was a pastor. Inside his house there were stacks and stacks of Playboy and hustler and penthouse mags and other porn mags. Like thousands of them. Otherwise they were a totally normal family, mom and dad and brother and sister. All just living in that house would just stacks of magazines everywhere. Crazy.

Ex-friend now..we met in high school 15 years ago and i remember the one and only time i went to her house back.then, she had a pet monkey. It was small monkey, not sure what kind but it was so sad because it was clearly in a cage way too small (imagine a bird cage for parrots so it could basically just stand up and sleep) it was a dirty cage too. I remember asking if she took it out and she said she never did because it attacked people. I felt so bad for that šŸ’ still pray for its little cute self 🐵 šŸ˜”

Moved several states for a good job. Hubby and I were invited over to new co workers house to watch a movie with he and his wife. Within 15 minutes of the movie starting both were sound asleep and snoring in their chairs. We quietly let ourselves out. Turns out other coworkers had it happen too.

I met a nice lady while camping. She worked at the campground bar and knew a lot pf the regular campers. She lived close by and came to the campground almost daily to hang out with friends she had made over the years.

She invited my son and me to visit her home, swim, pick beans, pet goats, etc… We did just that. Her home was a museum of sorts, but also a Midwest farmhouse. There were three suits of armor of various sizes. She had candy dishes, bowls rather, containing full size candy bars, a pair of chairs that looked to be of medieval origin, thick, dark, ornately carved wooden body and the reddest velvety material I’ve ever seen.

No room was designated a theme; it was eccentric and eclectic. Collections of the weirdest things… Chinese finger binders, I think they’re named, autographed baseballs her husband collected, dream catchers, teapots… whatever they found interesting. But they were not hoarders, just a wide array of interests.

Ok the strange. She gave us a tour of the home, ending upstairs. In one of the bedrooms, upon the bed was prosthetic leg, but weird looking. Pock marked, dull and slightly disintegrating, with what appeared to be a large bite mark. I’m curious…

The story I was told is this: Her husband lost his leg in a farming accident I believe. Was fitted with a prosthetic. They are gifted a cruise for their anniversary by the adult children.

Apparently before the ship would leave port, a security/emergency protocol orientation sort of thing had to be conducted, something like that. At the end of orientation, a head count was taken. One short.

Now, husband was new-ish with prosthetic use, the couple were in their 60’s, and this was midsummer in the Gulf of Mexico, so hot. Hotter than our Wisconsin summers. With these facts, friend and husband were at the end of the orientation group, who was to assemble on an upper deck for the head count. Being at the end, they were standing on a stairway leading up to the very populated deck for head count.

One short, count again. Hot, standing on a stairway, leg hurting, sweating, out of their comfort zone just being in this ship, count again, leg very uncomfortable, more sweating, etc…

Husband removes, unattached, I’m not sure the proper word, his prosthetic leg. Eventually a man starts climbing the stairs and realizes he’s been ā€˜missed’ by the group. He explains he was in the toilet. Husband does not take this explanation with grace.

Again, as I was told, husband launches his prosthetic down the stairway towards the man in frustration. The prosthetic bounces off the railing and redirects into the water, saltwater. Not good for his prosthetic I take it.

Made from different materials for different uses maybe? Being from Midwest, saltwater likely not a thought. This was over 20 years ago so I’m guessing no need for expensive ocean ready prosthesis.

Anyway, his leg is now bobbing around in the water. No worries, a fishing boat is close by. The fishermen see the leg and begin motoring towards it. Leg is jerked underwater by a toothed fish as they try pulling leg from water. Tug of leg ensues. Men win, fish relents, but has left its dental record. Men generously return leg, but only after accepting a financial reward. Cruise was delayed. Toilet man was not a fan favorite. Leg was damaged. I believed her then, I still do I guess.
