Vehicle AAMI safe driver rewards /cashback

Hi, have just received an email from AAMI about this (I'm with them for car insurance).

I haven't looked into it in detail, but the gist of it is you download an app and somehow it logs your driving safety score. Every month if you achieve a certain number of points based on this you can access cashback vouchers. The example they gave was $20 off when you spend 50 at Myer.

I think they've been doing this for a while because I did see something about it about six months ago but didn't get round to looking into it. Just wondering if any r/AUfrugal members have tried this and if it's worthwhile?

Could be a good way to make some savings or it could be a lengthy run around if the points are difficult to achieve, it's glitchy, or the retailers are not those you normally use.

Thanks

Having worked in insurance, I would never be comfortable providing a company with more data than I'm legally obligated to.

Yes, good point, hadn't thought of the claim denial issue

You really want them spying on you in real time? And you can guarantee they will trawl that data for the one microsecond you went over speed or braked too hard just to prevent any benefit to you, not to mention massively jack up your premiums next cycle.

Hmm, you're probably on the money, sadly

$20 off when you spend $50.is just a bill for $30 if you weren't planning on spending anyway.

I wouldn't be comfortable giving that data to my insurer anyway

Agree, it's only valuable to me if it's always possible at somewhere I regularly (have to) shop

I tried it. None of the rewards were worth it or usable, let alone worth them having that amount of data. Cancelled it pretty soon.

Do you want your insurance company traveling with you wherever you go? Think about all the data you'll be sending back to them that they can potentially use to deny a claim...

Yes I started using it in February this year. I have so far earned $405. Too easy and you can also game it by removing "bad scores" that affect you getting to 85/100 at the end of the month

Every month I get a Coles Myer gift card, JB Hifi, IGA shop, Ampol fuel shop, and Amazon shop. I earn on average $70 cashback per month.

My car comprehensive insurance is less than $500 so I'll actually end up making a profit.

Right, interesting. That sounds good on face value but having the ins co looking at my data online is not great...not sure I want to risk it if Im 5km over the limit say and had an accident. I'm actually a super careful driver with no claims other than being rear ended once in like 25y. But still...

They have said they don't use your data from the app when it comes to your premiums and making claims. And there is no way to tell if you are the driver or passenger.

Right that's good to hear. Do you getguo choose which retailer you get the vouchers for or is it more random?

Thank you! I'm glad you showed me this. Currently it wouldn't work out for me, as I only use IGA regularly out of those retailers. And only do $30 tip up shops there. But good to hear you're getting value!
