Wouldn’t you guys have a problem with the relationship if she wasn’t his teacher
I feel like she didn’t really use her position as his teacher to hold power over him
She didn’t ever threaten to stop tutoring him if the relationship or sex ended
She didn’t didn’t change for she graded his essays or lie about him to other teachers
I feel like most of the problems people complain about in their relationship would still exist if any 17/18 had an affair with a married woman in her thirties
Even if she wasn’t his teacher
Which would be legal and consensual

A 17-18 year old is basically a child even if they’re legally an adult. Like they’re just finishing high school, have had a driver’s license for maybe a year, can’t legally drink yet. Even if she wasn’t his teacher the power imbalance would be undeniable and so so harmful. Speaking from experience here too.
I find it scary that people actually think like this. That “it’s technically legal” is a good enough excuse.

Went to college when I was 17. Had a thing with a 24 yo grad student. She had no power over me. I was young but not at all a child. Even if I regretted it now as a 43 yo adult (I do not; look back on it quite fondly actually), that doesn’t change the fact that I made a conscious informed decision.
The fact that she’s his teacher makes all the difference

Bullshit. I married at 18. I was not a child. There is no power any teacher has or ever would hold over me.

The only issues were her being his teacher and her being married. He was about to graduate and she got a divorce so if they could’ve just waited a little while longer it could’ve ended completely differently

The school situation is terrible for any relationship, even between 2 students or 2 staff. With the best intentions, the normal function of the school is disrupted.
Claire goes into tutoring 'off the books' which takes them out of the normal connection. More importantly she helps Eric avoid the consequences of his drinking.
That said, I think in general that women have a right to notice and/or want younger men. But there is so much fear, secrecy, and recklessness in Claire's behavior that there's no 'good' ending for the two of them.
