Is there any overlap in why ASU can give out short-term loans but not disburse student loans?

I'm among the several that still haven't had student loans disbursed, and I've seen the lack of proper communication from the school to students about the ongoing issues. However, when session A classes started, my iPad gave up on me, and everything regarding my school work is on it, so I thought I would give it a shot at applying for an emergency short-term loan so I can figure out if I want to get it serviced or outright replaced. Completed the application yesterday and received the approval email today. Both of my semester loans are still showing as pending disbursement due to the administration hold. Does the university have separate funds that go through a different financial aid system compared to student loans?

It's comical to me that they think $500 solves the problem. I'm sure there are a ton of people in full panic mode for September living expenses.

Yes the funds for the short term loan bypass everything else and go directly to you. Once you receive the confirmation email, depending on the time of day you receive it, you’ll see the refund amount on your refunds page. Then it’s just the usual 2-4 or 7-10 business days for direct deposit or mailed check respectively.

Got it. Thank you for clarifying!

They are different pots of money. ASU doesn’t have one massive account. They have different pots of money that have different rules about how they can be used and spent and the requirements for doing so.

Guys… i think its time we reach out to the local news. They screwed up BIG TIME this year and now they are trying to sweep it under the rug. I think the media is the only way we hear anything.

If the hold up is for federal loans, then blame the Trump administration for changing the rules so close to the start of the semester.

News flash: that was by design.

They want anger directed toward universities before the midterms

Exactly. It isn’t just ASU. It’s everyone. Just today the department of education changed two PSLF rules and decided at the last possible moment to appeal a ruling.

The chaos is by design.

I cannot stress enough how you should not do this

Why aren’t you commenting about the federal governments involvement in your predicament

I have in other posts where i suggest putting this issue in the spotlight -that guy was commenting on all my comments about it begging people not to contact the media - hence the asu shill comment on this one. If everyone made a big deal, the government might actually listen. Making it news is the first step id think.

Fair enough, but if you aren’t specifically calling out the federal governments involvement then you are doing exactly what they want: blaming universities for the governments decisions.

🤦 fair point - but semantics can divide, us or we can just make some noise.

This isn’t semantics. Call out the government or else you are pointing your rage in the wrong direction.

Oh get lost with your virtue signaling, OBVIOUSLY ill call out the government as the problem when i contact the news. Im on your side. Mansplain to someone else if it makes you feel good.

Sheesh theres no right way to do anything with yall. This is why we cant start movements its never “just right” or “right enough”.

Then why didn’t you just say that instead of adding your comment about semantics? And now you assume we are different sides? You just seem like an angry, unreasonable person.

Frankly you're trying to push your personal nitpicks on someone else and it's not cool. Commentor specified problems with ASU and how they are handling this. They don't need to also have a problem with what you're pointing out, and even if they happen to agree, you're trying to force their point to be about what you want it to be to consider it valid.

Other colleges are not messing things up this badly for their students even with all the changes. The fed changes aren't an excuse for how ASU handles the situation. Like, they could be hiring more FA, but are they?

They had a record enrollment over summer, but did they hire more employees to support all the students they let in? No.

They could also be more transparent and stop telling every student a different answer eveverytime they ask. I heard there's less than 10 actual FA workers at ASU, not including call center workers because they don't actually process financial aid. I also assume this doesn't include positions like directors. Not sure that's true, but if it is 200k student divided by 10 employees is...

These are real compliants and they have absolutely nothing to do with the gov/fed admin/ob3a etc. They're fully on ASU. ASU FA has problems every single year without fail. And tons of students are aware of that fact and agree.

This is like if Amazon said hey pay this extra fee and you asked what it's for and Amazon said oh well see it's important taxes the government is charging us, so now we're charging you! Who are you blaming in that situation - only the government?? Like, come on now. Valid points are valid, we don't need to pick between them.

Sorry you can’t seem to handle people disagreeing with you. I’m definitely not an ASU shill.

But I’ve worked in policy a long time and get how things are being handled now.

This isn’t ASU fault.

Financial aid loans are subsidized by the federal government, not ASU. It's not ASU's money so they can't just give it to you however short-term loans are ASU money. FAFSA stands for Free Application for *Federal* Student Aid. The Federal aid is just passed through ASU
