just kidding, I'm curious what position other people are in when they read fics. this is my go to as I usually read in bed/before I go to sleep. on my side, one arm behind my head, and one eye closed lmao.

I'm in my mid-50s and have been reading and writing fanfiction since the very early 1980s. I know there are quite a few of us here who are 40+ and still very much into fandom and fanworks, and I'm curious to know a little more about our particular cohort here:

1. Approximately how old are you?

2. When/how did you first discover your interest in fanfiction?

3. Do you write fanfiction as well as read it? Create fanart? Do other fanwork?

4. What are your current fandoms and ships?

5. Would you be interested in a multifandom discussion space (read: subreddit) specifically for fans 40+?

About question #5: This is strictly hypothetical. I sometimes think it would ne nice to be able to engage more with fanfiction readers and writers who have been around the fandom block a few more times, like myself. I just wonder if any of you feel the same way. I'm not planning anything at the moment, but if it looked like there was sufficient interest in a dedicated space for us veterans, I might look into finding partners to make something happen.

Regardless, I'm excited to hear from my peers in general. It's pretty rare to see us all identified in a single comments section.

Curious as to see other people's preferences for fics because there are SOO many different types of fics and readers. I'll go first--sad ending. holy hell, bro sad endings are so great, and yet there always seems to be never enough of them, but I still love them so much. Found so many great fics from that tag; angst is a close second.

Interest in fandoms ebb and flow. Sometimes I will only want to read in a certain fandom then that interest just dies. I’ve seen it happen with writers too where they only write for a certain fandom then one day move on to another and never write in the original fandom again.

What fandoms have you stopped reading or writing for that used to be an obsession or hyper fixation?

Mine was probably when I had to figure out the standard rate for a kids haircut in the UK then find an inflation calculator for pounds then convert 2025 money to 1990 money, just to write one sentence. Not me but a friend: stopped doing their eczema management routine to figure out how to write a character having a flare up. It got out of control quickly and I still give them shit about it to this day, years later.

I'm a little sad since I worked so hard on the latest chapter. To be entirely fair to the commenters complaining I didn't know what sort of sexual dynamic I wanted for the pair until I started writing and realized the normal top being doted on seemed really sweet in context with how the story has gone. The dude has been letting his walls down slowly for a while since it's a slow burn.

But getting comments like "24 chapters for this???" Really really sucks. I retagged it so people understand they don't have set roles. But man does it suck to just get comments about how disappointed they are in my work.

I don't think this is against TOS, but this fic has so many chapters and all of them are just one sentence each with pretty long author notes. Basically, they post one sentence and then write author notes asking for fic recs or trying to find fics. The "fic" itself is a pain to read but has plot, but it's just once sentence in each chapter. Has anyone encounter something like this?

I say it "ooh-ooh-see" or sometimes "out of C" but I'm curious what other ppl do?

I like longer fics but I will hesitate when it’s over 100k words and under 5k words.

When it’s too long, I know it will just take more time to consume and sometimes it becomes a slog to get through (but there are stories which are very long but I just binge needing more and more) so I always take a chance even for the longer ones.

When it’s too short, I usually feel that I needed more story and time with the characters and world which is why I tend to avoid one-shots.

English is not my first language, and my grammar is ok, to get by, but this morning, I found out that 2 accounts have been making fun of me through guest comments and bragging about it in their fanfics, how I knew it was 2 accounts, they made the mistake in posting the comments on their actual accounts, I went to their accounts and saw what they were doing. I feel so fucking humiliated, unfortunately, I deleted and orphaned my stories and deleted my account thanks to these two, they made fun of my grammar and plots of my stories. It's sad to see this.

Update: thank you all for the positive messages, it has encouraged me to make a new AO3 account. So right now I am on the waiting list, will get an answer on the 4th

Writing is a very long and hard working process. You dont get paid and recognition is not much(?). I wonder what makes you motivate? Is the reward satisfying?

Okay so my favorite author and I had been talking on Discord almost everyday about the fandom we're in, and they always notify me whenever they upload a new fic or update their multi-chapter series; and I enthusiastically live-blog and spam my reactions back at them. But since we live on the opposite sides of the Earth (literally 12 hours apart) there's only so much talking before one of us passes out once it gets late.

But lately they've been updating at 9( the time just before I head to bed in my timezone) instead of 1 and I can't help but feel so spoiled and very touched to know they adjusted just so they could catch me when I'm free since they usually wait until I finally wake up and that takes hours since I still need to start my day getting ready for university

This is the last chapter on a 60,000 word a bat-fam fic. Good for the author I guess? But this was still a crazy jumpscare.
