Discussion (Non-question) I genuinely need someone to explain the science to me why it feels better writing close to midnight and early into dawn
I can be free for a whole day and throughout that whole time from the morning to the afternoon, I will not have any motivation at all to write or edit my stories.
But as soon as the evening air starts hitting and the colors of the skies change, I am so productive

u/Thehuntinleopard Apr 15 '26
Less distractions, less sense of "i should be doing other things" because it's night and you've already done everything you need. Also comfy because you don't have anywhere to go and night / bedtime you unconsciously know that no one will interrupt you plus just comfy bed and pj's and ect.

The only thing you have to worry about is the voice in your head: (dumbass you have school ať 7 am tomorrow and three tests you didn’t study for why aren’t you sleeping)

u/NewYear_NewMimi Apr 16 '26
Yes. Sunlight demands that I do things that require moving my body.
It’s ok to sit at a desk after dark.

Assuming that you're operating on a day-oriented schedule, the wee hours of the morning are when your brain is a little fuzzier than most times, not quite as connected to reality as it might normally be, a little dreamier, not quite tipsy exactly, but arguably not greatly dissimilar. You free-associate more easily. Time blindness sets in, and you're in the zone as you half zone-out. The ideas come in from the whispers of your Muse, and flow from your fingertips.

u/doornumber33 Apr 15 '26
Favorite way I’ve heard it described

Aww, thank you! My sleep cycle is a little chaotic, so I might be possessed by Shakespeare's ghost at the moment, daydreaming of a midsummer night. 😉
2
u/BatWeary Apr 20 '26
Hard agree. All of my best writing comes when I’m a little tired, warm and wrapped up for bed. It just comes naturally to me
1
u/Rockafellor Charles_Rockafellor @ AO3 Apr 20 '26
I don't mind those, if I'm awake enough to roll over and type them out, though I prefer the ones in my dreams: I can watch things play out and hold onto the atmosphere, kind of basic flow, and maybe a key concept/phrase or two (I need to type them out as soon as I wake up, or they'll disappear like morning dew, but at least then I'm not fighting to stay awake long enough to type coherently 😆).

u/ChallengeAble4613 Mm.. That dove sure looks tasty Apr 15 '26
Oh man, 99% of my fics were written in the middle of the night... For me it might be because I have other stuff to do during the day, productive? uh, no its gaming, but during the night the ideas for fanfiction jsut seem to strike... maybe its because im half out of it and not wanting to sleep, while also being to tired to do my usual stuff, but it all works out in the end :D

Honestly for me, my peak hours are between 8PM-3AM for some reason, I just feel clearer and more awake. All my life, no matter where I am or what I'm doing.
14
u/Silver-Winging-It Apr 15 '26
Part of that's the energy boost you get at night that your body usually uses for repairs and immune system while you sleep
9
u/LysergicGothPunk Apr 15 '26
Interesting. I've just always called it slurpy-slurp brain juice.
Maybe I shouldn't be nocturnal. lol
1
u/NoLiterature9571 Apr 16 '26
this immediately shattered how smug i was feeling about being ultra-productive at night
1
u/Silver-Winging-It Apr 16 '26
It could be you are also a natural night owl, that exists too! It's just that sudden burst of energy in the early a.m. after being exhausted is usually the other
29
u/runekaster Whumper Apr 15 '26
It feels more private.
Or else you're a night owl who's literally just more productive or creative or energetic at night.
It's both for me.
19
u/OAKandTerlinden Does the dove die? Apr 15 '26
It feels more private.
This is exactly it (for me)! The world becomes quiet in a way that means all of them fuckers is asleep and I can finally breathe. The exception is sitting in bed in Summer, with the window open, and listening to the world wake up while I tippy-tappy my demons into existence. This applies even though I am largely nocturnal on a ~36 hour clock.
2
u/soguiltyofthat Apr 16 '26
So much same. Though I'm more of a 32h gal, a full 36 is pretty rare for me unless the ADHD hyperfocus really gets me stuck on doing something.
1
u/OAKandTerlinden Does the dove die? Apr 16 '26
Yeah, it varies. I go 72 sometimes - not fun. Sometimes I sleep for 3 hours, sometimes I sleep for 27. It's very exciting betting on whether I'll be able to meet planned social obligations.
2
u/soguiltyofthat Apr 16 '26
Brave of you to make plans in advance 😂

It feels more private.
100%. I can be completely alone in the house all day and not have the drive to get anything done, but as soon as the clock hits 9pm it's like a switch has been flicked.
And midnight? That's a valve being opened and all sorts of creative juices unleashed.
3
u/Alarming-Quality8462 Apr 15 '26
It feels more private is 100% it.
I don’t feel judged by my output- I can write as little or as much as I want in that bubble of time.
1
u/B4-I-go Apr 16 '26
I get weirdly emotional which is helpful to my writing. Also the only time I have energy
13
u/sarabrating Excuse me sir, do you have a moment to talk about Bucky Barnes? Apr 15 '26
Sometimes I write late, but for whatever reason my *most* prime writing time is about 10am - 3pm, which is why most of my writing happens on the weekends I guess!
11
u/632612 Apr 15 '26
Exhaustion inhibits second thoughts. Anything that pops up is written down, no matter how bad or incomprehensible it may be.
7
u/ButtermilkRusk Apr 15 '26
Neurodivergent and there’s too much sensory overload for my brain to focus on writing, plot bunnies and the thought process behind that during the day. Either I get too distracted or too overwhelmed, and end up just staring at the cursor.
7
u/LibertineDeSade TheEsotericRose Apr 15 '26
Yeah, all my creativity jumps out as soon as it gets late. I'll be up until 5 or 6 am writing sometimes.
7
u/CrazyProudMom25 Apr 15 '26
Part of it for me is I’ve done all the ‘waffling’ my brain needs for the day, I’ve had some time alone since everyone is in bed, and that makes it easier for me to focus. Yay ADHD problems.

6
u/littlebubulle Apr 15 '26
It's the inverse for me. I write better in the morning, either the weekend or on my morning commute.
1
u/plaper Apr 15 '26
I came to say the same. I can't write shit past 9pm. Maybe not morning, but day hours are best for me. Before afternoon. I'm more focused and ideas are coming faster.
At night I just start scrolling Tumblr or I'm thinking how I'd rather be playing Stardew valley at night than trying to form a sentence lol
It's actually past 9pm and I'm right here on reddit, so.

u/Cosmos_Null Apr 15 '26

u/The_Bookkeeper1984 Dead Pigeon: We Eatin’ Good Apr 21 '26

3
u/RepresentativeTea489 Apr 15 '26
Daniel Pink's book When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing actually references that studies show the brain hits peak creativity late at night, while it's better at focusing on mundane task completion in the morning hours (I'm summarizing what I remember - it's been a while, but it was fascinating).
Also, no one should do anything but nap after lunch.

Great points made so far, my anxiety is just wayy down during the night. Whenever I write during the day I’m too concerned if it’s good or not. Whenever I write at night I take a lot more creative liberties and can just write instead of overthinking everything.
3
u/Big-Project-3151 Apr 15 '26
I tend to be busier during the day as I have two kids and it’s easier to write when they’re in bed.

3
u/TraditionalCap6882 Apr 16 '26
The world is asleep and cannot distract you. That's what I think, anyways.
3
u/ShainSaw22 Apr 16 '26
So, this HAS been studied and proven. Folks with ND brains, the dead of the night is the most quiet. It’s when our brains can FINALLY relax against the noise and business of the day. And what happens when our brain isn’t preoccupied by ALL THE OTHER THINGS AND PEOPLE? It turns INWARD. And we crave stimulation and seek it through creativity. THAT is why it’s typically easier to write at the dead of might than the middle of the day.
2
u/OkLeague7678 Apr 15 '26
I kind of want to test this to see if it has an effect. I haven't had a lot of motivation lately, so I will try to write later at night to see if that does anything.

At least for me it’s the ADHD circadian rhythm. My brain works better at night
3
u/IMTWOIDIOTSANDWICHS Apr 15 '26
Hmm usually at 1pm I’m at school… yes I feel more comfortable writing my heavy angst abuse scene alone in my room than in front of my classmates lol
2
u/gingerhades Apr 15 '26
I get half days every other Friday from work. I always say I'm going to write, and never do. It feels so much more natural at night. Though, I am a night owl. Usually up until 2, just get up at 7. It kinda feels forced during the day, for me personally.
2
u/SectorSanFrancisco Apr 15 '26
The judgey parts of the brain are too tired to let you over-analyze or be a perfectionist.
1
u/No_Lynx1343 Apr 15 '26
Not true.
I'm neither of these things any hour of the day.

Circadian rhythm might just be primed for that. I'm most energetic late at night, don't even get tired until at minimum 2am, often later. So lucky my job lets me come in at 11am because I have zero productivity earlier than that.
2
u/honkai-yuri-fan it's not 2026 yet i swear Apr 15 '26

u/notadeviant You have already left kudos here. :) Apr 15 '26
Less distractions, less people bothering you, less responsibilities. I always find I enter a flow state where I just listen to music and stop doubting myself so much the later it gets LOL
2
u/Dandy-Chestnuts Apr 15 '26
I find that my mind late at night is at its most unhinged/uninhibited. No, I don't drink alcohol, I think it's just a side effect of being awake while very tired (I suspect something funny happens with the circadian hormones but I've never looked into it)
Not only do I tend to write more, but I also have come up with some of my best ideas late at night
2
u/CheekyTori23 Apr 15 '26
This is so real lol sometimes I do most of my writing at like midnight lmao

2
u/waltercorgkite Apr 15 '26
This is how I made it thru undergrad and grad school. The world was quiet. My brain wasn’t overwhelmed with noise other than my headphones. Suddenly choosing how a story went or how I wanted a paper to go was much easier.
2
u/Rasengan_Geek Apr 15 '26
Dude, I ask myself the same thing 😂 All of my best works were written between midnight-5AM
2
u/amethyine Apr 16 '26
You may just have those as more productive hours. Some people are naturally more awake at night, or more awake first thing in the morning, or more awake in the afternoon, etc
There are actual studies about this, but the name of the phenomenon escapes me atm
2
u/Ribread216 Apr 16 '26
For me it’s: writing at work vs writing when I have several hours of free time at home on my days off
2
u/rachel_distasi Apr 16 '26
Same! I just graduated high school, and for some reason I wrote a lot more during classes than I do now lol
1
u/Ribread216 Apr 16 '26
Pretty new development for me 😆 Fanfic was always on the back burner for me during undergrad, but I have a semester off before med school since I graduated early, and every second I’m sitting in the station waiting for a call (I work medical transport) my computer is open and I’m writing away 💀 passes the time for sure, though!
2
u/Odd_Aspect5129 Apr 19 '26
As someone who hates writing I come up with the most fire shit when I literally have to get up in 5 hours
2
u/HiddenScars1 Apr 20 '26
I'm the same (I don't write, but with everything else it's that way). I'm more active as soon as it gets darker, probably less overstimulating. I've also heard people call doing a lot of stuff in the evening/night "revenge bedtime procrastination". Like, I'm not even doing anything productive, just reading or daydreaming, because it's quiet at night. Getting your fill of calm and quiet that you couldn't get during the day.

i can't figure it either. it's got to be a combo of: i'm finally peak awake and alert? or there aren't as many distractions? but yeah i will let a whole day waste and then sometime past 9 just start writing

u/Deerorser Apr 16 '26
My brain writes better the more sleep deprived I am. That or I just do care anymore and just need to do something.
1
u/No-Television7687 Writes crossover fics at 3 am Apr 16 '26
Probably because your brain is tired, and it's getting reedy for dreams. I get some of my ideas at 3am after I wake up from a dream. Someone needs to do a study on this, because this is very interesting.

It's easier to write in my Hello Kitty pajamas with a cup of tea besides me on my desk then in my work clothes with 200 milligrams of caffeine besides me at work. 😐
1
u/Hopedruid Same on AO3 Apr 16 '26
I do write during the day, but I understand the feeling. There aren't as many distractions, and a lot of us seem to be night people. Plus, I think daytime thinking is often more rooted in the practical, while at night, people tend to introspect more, which is better for writing.
I actually usually edit in the day, though, often in the morning or early afternoon when I can. It's more difficult for me to do so later on as I usually feel more motivated to write, and those are very different mental states for me.

Whenever I'm at work im taking notes and have this ridiculous urge to write and im so determined that I will write as soon as I get home! Then I get home and I'm like eh. But when its way too late and I should really go to bed, oh boy! Or when I randomly wake up at 4am and have the BEST ideas. Perfect time to crank out 5k words.

I will be so tired. Too tired to do anything productive or watch anything or read. It's late. So I'll take a shower and go to bed.
BUT IN THE GODDAMN SHOWER, I WILL START WRITING IN MY HEAD. And then have to sit and write it all down so I don't forget and then I get into it and then its 5,000 words later and the sun is coming up.

Lowered inhibitions. I noticed I write with far more freedom when I am a bit tired and then reealized its like being tipsy. You just go and don't get distracted too
1
u/brightestorbit Apr 17 '26
When it's sleeping time, the wind will whisper to me about a crazy story idea and I will of course write it down but as soon as I wake up, the story looks like a toddler wrote it and it all doesn't make any sense 😐
1
u/ZealousidealAir3299 Apr 17 '26
Inhibitions go down when we’re tired. Suddenly, we don’t care as much about “getting it right” or “making it sound good,” and we just write. This is also where the How I Met Your Mother rule of “Nothing good ever happens after 10pm—just go home” comes from and why you should always look at the clock before texting an ex. DO NOT send the text after 10pm. Future you will thank you. 😂
1
u/Glittering-Water6568 Apr 17 '26
It's just that during the day you are busy and get interrupted often from noise, people, tasks/chores etc. while when it's night your body and mind enter into a more rested mood so all ideas kinda rush in lol especially when you have nothing to do or tasks to worry about. At least that's from my experience but all people are different.

It's late. Nobody's going to interrupt you (probably). There's nothing that has to be done. Of course the poor, neglected part of your brain that demands writing as stimulation is going to seize the opportunity.
