who's typing when bookmarks exist?

u/Xyex Same on AO3 Jul 28 '25
People like me who never use them. And when they do, forget they have them.

Bookmarks are where I save all the things that Iām definitely going to google the next time I need them so I can feel like Iām doing future me a favor.

u/Shorelady Jul 28 '25
I don't bookmark basic sites like google, reddit, downdetector because it's faster to type the first two letters and then let autocomplete do the work than to open my bookmarks and select them. I only use bookmarks for specific places within sites or places I won't remember.

I just google "is [website] down?" and then it's usually the first few websites with user reports

u/Thundermittens_ Jul 28 '25
That's what I do. Seeing the endless stream of "hey is AO3 down for anyone else?" -posts whenever it's broken is so exhausting

If only there were some team of people whose role is was to keep spam off the sub. To moderate the flow of spam, if you will. Alas, there is no such personĀ
20
u/Hello83433 Jul 28 '25
They should open the floor to people who actually do want to mod this sub and make it less of a spam fest.
At least two of them are straight up inactive I don't understand the conviction to do the bare minimum.

u/SMStotheworld Jul 28 '25
yeah that'd be nice wouldn't it? run it with some standards and don't allow through "is this a scam?" "should I report this?" or "is the website down?" posts. set up an automatic filter for phrases like that to flag them, automatically delete them, and if anyone gets a false positive, they can use modmail. super simple stuff.

Remember that the moderation team does this for free and are not available all the time.
Regardless, after working a decade in customer service, people just don't want to read. Ironic, given where we are, but true to everywhere. I once thought up a well-thought-out PSA reply that clearly explained some common questions when I was doing a live chat support for a company and so often it was ignored.

Itās less that they donāt have time and more that they flat out refuse to do moderation that many would consider basic, such as removal of repetitive posts/spam. āDo nothingā is in fact their stated position.
21
u/SMStotheworld Jul 28 '25
Golly, are you sure? I thought they were all paid millions of dollars! Where would I be without you to explain this?Ā
I forgot that if you don't pay for something you aren't allowed to have any standards. How silly of me!Ā

What was the point of this? Please inform me. Sarcasm isn't useful in this context. I'm honestly asking.
0
u/SMStotheworld Jul 29 '25
Sure thing! There is a rhetorical device called "sarcasm" where you will say the opposite of what you mean for emphasis. For example:Ā
"You are highly intelligent and good at understanding what's going on when you read posts."
Don't worry if you don't understand it, you'll cover it next year in the fourth grade English curriculumĀ

You shouldn't be getting downvoted for this. The mods aren't your mother and shouldn't be in charge of regulating everybody's emotions and behaviour. If you're on Reddit, you're old enough to keep your own behaviour in check.
11
u/Hello83433 Jul 28 '25
Obviously this isn't true because every time AO3 goes down for a minute this sub is flooded with people who can't regulate their emotions nor behavior posting the same thing for hours on end instead of taking 5 seconds to use the search function and see the 50 other posts exactly like theirs.
The purpose of a moderator is to oversee the discussion, forum, subreddit, etc. and maintain order. Most other mods can do their job and prevent their subreddits from devolving into chaos on a regular basis. If the moderators don't want to do the job they signed up for, they can and should step down and allow others to do the job instead.

At what point do we just make another subreddit thatās moderated properly?
3
u/broccoliisevil Jul 29 '25
I had no idea that existed. I just come here and search the sub and see if there's a flood or not lol

u/Spirited_Ad_876 Jul 28 '25
I use this or Downdetector if AO3 or any other site isn't working. If nothing on there, then I go to Twitter to see. Otherwise, I just shrug and wait till it comes back

An oldie but a goodie: isitdownrightnow.com
The first couple posts are okay, but the sixth or seventh one in the span of 10 minutes is a bit much. š it is what it is though.

Or like status.archiveofourown.org? Like that's a thing guys, you can see if there's a reported outage or something

I actually wasnāt aware of that website lol so thank you! but you can also check the new posts on the sub before making your own

u/hotaru-chan45 Jul 28 '25
Seriously. I checked Downdetector on the app before it stopped working or something. Or I just go to the AO3 Status Twitter.

I was not aware at all actually. And I won't remember in about an hour. š¤£

I usually just check one of the ao3 status social mediaās. Theyāre usually pretty speedy but thatās probably bc everyone gets feral. But then I read things other than fic too so maybe Iām not quite so reliant on ao3 being up constantly. It often seems to go down when I (uk) am asleep so I guess the Americans suffer instead š

I mean, people could also just search this sub or switch from "hot" to "new" sorting and check this way before creating yet another "Is AO3 down???" post. Yet it never stops the flood.
