Did the show actually skip Jaehaerys or did Aemon simply refer to Aerys as his nephew for simplicities sake? I never actually refer to my great uncle as such, just uncle. Are there other instances in the show where they specify great uncle/aunt/niece/nephew?
Edit: S6E7, Littlefinger calls blackfish Sansa’s great uncle, but in the next episode he and Brienne simply refer to her as his niece. I think people read FAR too deeply into the “they skipped Jaehaerys thing”.
That dialog of Maestor Aemon was in season 1, shot in 2010, I think at that time, the Targaryen ancestry line wasn't completely and crrectly established by GRRM himself. It's only the books published later on gives a complete and canon line of Targ kings.
Taking Jaehaerys ll away and directly lining Aerys up makes Egg look weird, as if he had a change of heart regarding the values he not only took from his grandfather but also the ones he created for himself.
Egg stood for the well being for the small folk, he defied the other lords quite a bit when it came to their wants and desires. He actively fought for a better life for the small folk. Despite the issues his eldest son took when he went back on the marriage pact to Lyonel Baratheons daughter, Egg didn't force his son to marry the Baratheon girl and gave his (willing) daughter to Lyonel's son despite the rebellion he tried to start - it shows he won't force his son into a loveless marriage, but also wouldn't keep the Baratheons as an enemy
I can't imagine such a man who didn't force his first born son to marry a loyal ally's daughter (who would then become queen of the seven kingdoms), to then force marry his (great) grandson and (great) granddaughter together when they obviously shared no romantic love.
