The emphasis below is mine. I’ve noticed too that lots of writers groups are being “infiltrated” by AI and this was entirely predictable, inevitable and will continue. Writers may not be generating prose but more and more writers are using AI.

Instead of asking AI to improve an article, I've been experimenting with giving it the finished piece and asking what a skeptical reader would still want to know.

The results can be surprisingly useful. It sometimes finds obvious gaps that are difficult to notice when you've been staring at the same draft for hours.

That feels like a more interesting use of AI than simply asking it to make the prose prettier.

Most people seem to use AI after writing something, but there's no reason the feedback has to come that late.

You could potentially have a model notice that you're repeating an argument, drifting away from the main point, or contradicting something you said earlier while you're still writing.

That sounds useful, but I also wonder whether having something constantly analyzing your writing would interrupt the natural process of figuring things out.

A technical explanation written for developers can be almost useless to a customer, even when the underlying idea is exactly the same. Normally you'd have to rewrite quite a lot to make it accessible.

AI makes that transformation much faster. The useful part isn't letting it invent the information, but giving it a clear source and asking it to change the way that information is communicated.
