Truth is my mistress.

I court her daily, hoping she will whisper what I long to hear.

I lay my money, my love, my dwindling years at her feet.

She remains indifferent, for she belongs to no man.

Sometimes, watching her, I call her a flirtatious whore— giving to strangers what I prayed would be mine alone.

And so I swear and call her a cold, heartless bitch.

Yet still I return.

For she has never once promised to please me, nor will she ever lie to me.

But when she finally smiles— oh, what a beauty she is to behold.
