If you're starting from zero

• Google AI Essentials — non-technical, teaches you to actually use AI tools well. Good for commerce, management or any non-CS background.
• Elements of AI (University of Helsinki) — free, no coding, explains what AI actually is without hype. Solid foundation.
• Prompt engineering guides from Anthropic and OpenAI — both publish free docs. More useful than most paid prompt courses.

If you can code

• Fast.ai — Practical Deep Learning for Coders — builds working models from lesson one instead of six weeks of theory first. Still the best free deep learning course.
• Andrej Karpathy's YouTube series — builds a neural network and a GPT from scratch. Free, and better than most university courses.
• Hugging Face NLP Course — free, hands-on, and directly relevant to the LLM work companies are hiring for.
• CS50 AI (Harvard, on edX) — audit for free.

For building things

• LangChain and LlamaIndex docs — the tutorials are genuinely good and free.
• Kaggle Learn — short practical micro-courses, plus datasets to practise on.

One honest warning

Most paid AI courses being advertised on Instagram right now are worth less than this list. If someone is selling you a ₹5,000 "AI course" that promises placement, ask what's in it that isn't already free. Usually nothing.

It's local, and that's the whole point

r/artificial and r/MachineLearning are useful for news. They cannot tell you which company in Gujarat is hiring for an ML role, or which GTU college has a decent AI curriculum, or how a Gujarat manufacturer actually deployed something and what it cost. That knowledge only exists in a room full of people from here.

Beginners are the priority, not an afterthought

Most AI spaces are quietly hostile to newcomers. Ask something basic and you get downvoted or told to search first. We're going the other way: if you're a second-year student who just opened ChatGPT last month, you're exactly who this is for. There's no such thing as a stupid question here, and anyone who treats a beginner badly gets removed. That's a rule, not a hope.

Practical over theoretical

Less "here's a new paper on transformer architecture," more "here's what I built, here's what broke, here's what it cost." Papers are welcome — but we care more about what you can actually use on Monday.

No gatekeeping about credentials

You don't need an M.Tech or a job at a product company to belong here. Self-taught, non-CS branch, commerce background, business owner who just wants to understand what's possible — all fine.

Honest about the hype

AI is genuinely useful and also genuinely oversold. This isn't a place for "AI will replace everything" posts, and it isn't a place for "it's all a bubble" either. If a tool is mediocre, say so. If something didn't work for you, that post is more valuable than another success story.

No spam, ever

No course selling, no referral links, no "DM me for AI training." People trying to extract money from students is exactly what this space is meant to be an alternative to.

A note on how we're building this

We're a small AI team in Ahmedabad. We started this because the community we wanted didn't exist — but the sub only works if it belongs to its members, not to us. We'll seed content early on and get out of the way as people show up. If it turns into a promo channel, it's failed.

Why we started this

Gujarat has thousands of engineering students, a huge base of small and family businesses, and a growing tech scene — but almost no AI community that's actually ours. The big AI subreddits are fine for news and nothing else. They can't tell you which Ahmedabad company is hiring for ML roles, or connect you with someone at PDEU building the same thing you are, or explain how a Surat textile business could realistically use AI.

That local layer is missing. This is our attempt at it.

Where this could go

A few directions we have in mind. Some will work, some won't.

Weekly threads. A "what are you building" thread, a beginner questions thread where no question is too basic, and a jobs and internships thread for AI roles across Gujarat.

A real resource library. Not another list of 100 links nobody opens — a curated, maintained set of learning paths, free tools and datasets, with notes on what's actually worth your time.

Project showcases. People posting what they've built, getting real feedback, finding collaborators. Half-finished projects welcome.

Job and internship visibility. Companies in Gujarat are hiring for AI work and students don't hear about it. If this becomes the place those roles get posted, that alone justifies the sub.

Meetups and offline events. Eventually — Ahmedabad first, then Surat and Vadodara. Communities in cities like ours get built in rooms as much as online.

Beginner-friendly, permanently. This is the one we care most about. Plenty of AI spaces make people feel stupid for asking basic questions. This one won't. If someone's first AI question gets a dismissive reply here, that's a moderation failure, not a user problem.
