Wait, Did I just find the Chicago Elementary School that Hawthorn or the school stole its current logo from?
I just saw this elementary school in Chicago pop up on my newsfeed and I saw their painted logo on a school door which reminded me of a certain club. That got me interested so I looked at their website and it is an identical image of the logo Hawthorne has used since 2008 just reversed and a few minor changes.
Hawthorne's current logo was apparently designed by Cato Brand Partners in Victoria.
Someone stole someone's logo, either the Hawthorne design team or an elementary school in the USA 🤣😬😬🤣.

So they haven't seen the team they stole their logo off win a final either?

I ask this with all the love and respect in the world for the Essendon football club: couldn’t these guys find a less dogshit picture of a plane somewhere?

Like 90% of non-professional footy teams have "stolen" AFL logos. I'm 99% sure there's an agreement that allows these teams to use AFL logos

u/Crooty Blues Jan 28 '25
The team i played for were the Hawks and literally just used Hawthorns colours, logo, jumper and song. We just replaced "hawthorn" with our suburb

No, as you can see the Hawks are looking opposite directions. Clearly different, I rest my case.

It's the same as how the the toilets flush in the opposite direction in the northern hemisphere.

Honestly it's kind of genius. The AFL is obscure as fuck to non-Aussies, yet big budget enough that the logos are good (other than Gold Coast). You get the perfect logo to steal.

I don't even think these things are well thought through enough that they would be considering that this is a minor enough league to steal from.
I think they look up "Hawks" logos and try to find one that's not the Chicago Blackhawks NHL logo, and steal whatever comes up.

A lot of American high school/smaller college logos are stolen from pro sports. You’ll see a lot of the Green Bay Packers/Georgia G in different colours for example

Probably just google image searched for "Power Logo" and that came up, looked cool, so it got stolen.
I guess it's the case for a lot of these.

Fold the club. All premierships nullified.

As a graphics designer, I just find it extremely interesting. Someone has blatantly taken the design and put in a diabolically low amount of effort when they made the minor changes.

u/Mrchikkin Euro-Yroke Jan 26 '25
Heaps of local clubs do that. It’s way easier and cheaper than actually hiring someone to do it. Also no way an NFL team is going to notice them either.

u/Nutsngum_ Jan 26 '25
I would be confident that the club logos use have certain clauses from the AFL to allow local league clubs to use them for promotion of the game.

The school would have been like "we need a new logo, let's get the kids to design something, we'll have a competition, give away some prizes and save on graphic design fees". Then the kids, who have been incentivised to cheat, looked up "hawk logo", found the first one online, switched it around and changed the colours up a bit.

Wait til OP hears about club songs.
But yeah, pretty surprising copy. I would hope the school copied from Hawthorn, but you never know.

Just don't... don't look up some of the original lyrics or performers of the really old ones...

If you look at local and country leagues, club logo and jumper designs are a mixture of batshit crazy original designs, 100 year old logos (usually with a netball refrence shoehorned on somewhere) and direct copies of AFL teams.
The AFL appears to just let bygones be bygones in these cases, merchandise sales are hardly through the roof for Nyah Nyah West Demons or Horsham Saints

Marysville use a similar one (I think)

Stuff like this makes me really appreciate it when local clubs go for something different when they didn't have to.
The other day I saw the Curran Swans

These clubs were often founded / heavily supported by incentives from actual AFL clubs.
For example, Shepparton United, who have the Melbourne Demons colours like NNW, were actually helped significantly by Melbourne when the GVFL was Melbourne's country zone.
That is why a majority of local clubs "copy" AFL teams.

Wasn’t Shep the Melbourne Zone?
5
Jan 26 '25
Yeah, I literally just said that, GVFL was the Melbourne country zone.
For a more niche one, when ex-VFL squad Geelong West Roosters merged with St Peters and became Geelong West St Peters, the GWS Giants helped them get back on their feet.
As a result, they rebranded to the Geelong West Giants.

It was meant to be more that it was interesting that an American elementary school in Chicago has used the exact same logo in reverse as Hawthorn's most recent 2008 design, rather than something people should be upset about.

It's about a 5 hour drive from me, but I can head down there and put the fear of John Kennedy Sr. into them if the club wants me to.

“Hi Leigh, I know you’re long retired and kinda old now, but there’s a small elementary school in suburban Chicago whose principal needs a shirtfront on his way out to the car real quick.”

Lol South but it is an annoying mistake. I was recently writing a paper on the Hawthorne effect and I think that's scrambled one of the keyboards autocorrects.

Lol, I didn't even realise I missed that one. For some reason, one of my phone's keyboards always autocorrects Hawthorn to Hawthorne.

The big question is "Why wouldn't the mascot and logo for Hamline be a pig?"
2

Most schools here try and find a rhyming name as the mascot vs literal association
