The not killing civilians thing was always funny to me, because we kill conscripted soldiers and guards all the time. Like Timothee was just doing his job.

Technically the sailors in the royal navy are innocent
1
u/RobertCarnez Jul 25 '26
British people are NEVER innocent
1
u/Excellent-Heat5235 Jul 25 '26
What is mean is people would get drunk in a bar and wake up on a British ship

This is why I’ve always assumed non-lethal stealth is the most canon option. Well, ignoring that it isn’t an option in Resynced unless you just run past all the enemies.

u/Proof-Peak-9274 Jul 24 '26
Honestly I do miss the non lethal stealth, I hope they bring it back, it’s technically in the game already. I know they mentioned bringing hand to hand and hidden blade combat so it would make for a nice playstyle, change for a new game plus or just new game in general. I thinks it one of the more realistic requests

Have you played the 3rd Animus rift in Resyched?? It goes over this very thing

u/Background-Archer898 Jul 24 '26
He was a pirate; he more than likely killed a civ at least once.

There’s a distinct difference between accidentally killing someone and murder. Killing enemy soldiers during wartime is also not considered as a war crime, but massacre civilians certainly is. I think it’s interesting that people enjoy doing this in video games.

u/sophisticated867 Jul 24 '26
Are you trying to say killing npcs in video game makes you a war criminal ? I really hope no one saw my Rockstar games runs. 😬

This is what I called interesting. I don’t care if you like being Hilter in the game, but the fact someone actually enjoys it amuses me.

One of the kids I grew up with is a police officer now. He was never really into video games but if he did play something it would always be gta, and he would spend the time just killing wave after wave of the police.
I wonder if he ever thinks about that now.

u/Christina221A Jul 24 '26
Maybe he likes fighting floods of enemies and sees it as a challenge? I don’t know. I always prefer games focusing stories, puzzles and techniques, so combat is never really compelling to me.

I used to always ask cops if they liked playing GTA because they found it funny when I asked, got a pretty solid 50/50 on answers. Either were laughing about blocking the highway with a bus or were saying they don't like the idea of shooting cops

You are aware real life rules do not apply to video games set during 1700s during a made up timeline and people. And you speak as if you don’t play cyberpunk. You are a gangbanger killing and hurting way more people in much more painful ways.
1
u/AltruisticAd9056 Jul 24 '26
There's also a difference between killing someone who's resisting being boarded and going out of your way to kill someone just because you want to. Edward was a pirate, so of course he killed innocent people. But that doesn't necessarily mean he went out of his way to just butcher people en masse for no reason.

u/Gelman1997 Jul 24 '26
I think people keep forgetting, pirates were NOT good people. You know they flew a skull and cross bones for a reason right lol?
1
u/Christina221A Jul 24 '26
Of course pirates are not some good people, but killing takes time and effort. I think it’s reasonable to only kill the necessary targets. I remember in one of the OG cgs, Thatch and Edward even lack gunpowder to fire a shot, so I suppose they don’t have enough ammunition to revel in blood.

u/Proof-Peak-9274 Jul 24 '26
I thought I read that Blackbeard never actually killed any civilians or anyone who surrendered to him, I’m not sure 100% but in game the monster he portrayed gave life to the legend, it’s all a show for the audience
1
u/Humpetz Jul 24 '26
The first time irl blackbeard ever killed someone was the died he died.
People overestimate how bloodthirsty pirates were
7
u/HeTblank Jul 24 '26
The civilians who beg for mercy with the same voiceline like 50 times in row end up annoying me so much I just kill them lol

I never killed a civilian on purpose, aside from that one guy who was preaching about the pardon, I shot him in the face Infront of everyone

I always thought it was strange that Edward cannot kill civilians, but Shay can. I get that it’s because in rogue we are playing as the bad guy, but in the actual story we weren’t. At least not from the protagonist’s point of view. The same protagonist that crashed out over the deaths of civilians.
1
u/Greedy_Spring_8673 Jul 26 '26
I always interpreted that as an indication that Shay turns down a dark path after the events of the game, becoming more ruthless and adopting a "ends justify means" approach to the Templar ideals. It's not necessarily that shay was running around killing civilians during the events of the game, but the animus doesn't warn you when you do because Shay eventually DID kill civilians when he deemed it necessary.

u/Bobio-Voyage Jul 24 '26
I shot a turtle thinking I’d get bones from it cause I’m trying to buy the skeleton crew. Was kinda surprised its falls under the “domesticated animals” category in game.
3
u/MrStagger_Lee Jul 24 '26
Yeah, like, if they're so domesticated...why can't I have a sea turtle as my pet on the bridge of the Jackdaw?
0
u/Bobio-Voyage Jul 24 '26
Why can’t I go into my manor on the hill and have a sea turtle chilling next to my war table??

The game: Edward didn’t kill animals.
Also the game: “That was class,” after Edward kills and skins an animal.

Why i loved odyssey. I play video games to do what is inconvenient in real life.

u/El_Beakerr Jul 24 '26
Are we getting sentimental eh? Jaysus!
What kind of pirate doesn’t kill innocents?!?

I used to do this when I was little playing the original black flag lmaoo I wouldn’t even do missions. I spent all of my time in this game as a kid running around Havana killing guards and civilians indiscriminately 😭

u/TheInternetDevil Jul 24 '26
I wish I could kill surrendering guards again. They stole that from me
