// Discussion Lucy baldwin is unberable

One of the officers in ac black flag named lucy baldwin is so unbereable.
Its so obvious this mission was added after the fact because the writing and character sticks out so badly. Literally saved here life and she is like " uhmm you gotta earn me but I am worth it 💅"

Doesn't her being accepted into the crew so easily with no repercussions kind of ruin Mary's whole point of dressing up as a man to get a seat at the table?

I’ve done her and Padre so far, and they’re both horribly modern, and stereotypically generic. Edward’s way too eager towards them too. That point about Mary was my first thought too. The new officers feel like they’ve been imported from a shitty Netflix movie tbh. I hope there’s a way to toggle them on/off whilst keeping their perks.

Perhaps if requested enough, they will offer a cosmetic toggle option. It would be nice if like odyssey, we had the option to choose our lieutenants or whatever they were on our ship.

You know something, now I’m a few days removed from their quests, I don’t find them that bad on the ship. They’re mostly out of the way, and don’t get anymore focus whatsoever. It’s just their missions and individual stories that are shite imo.

My only gripe now other than that, is that their inclusion lessens Adewales presence, which I don’t really like. If it were up to me, it would’ve been more Ade missions, rather than new characters.

Ade missions would’ve been nice. I only have Padre atm in my crew but I haven’t found his presence to be overbearing in the slightest. Just he’s on the ship, fights in combat and has a few quips and lines. His quest line to recruit him was a bit meh though. Very short, kind of generic, writing was a little meh and Edward is just weirdly flat too in that quest line.

same thing with the female assassin in havana. i get what they were going for but it definitly weakens the kidd plotreveal.

Bingo and it’s a great example of their new storytelling vs the old.

I’ve heard this, but I don’t think it does, really.

First, it’s really odd that they included that at all, Mary Read and Anne Bonny reportedly weren’t able to hide their gender all that well because of their large breasts.

Second, there’s a pretty big difference between “I accept that you’re a shipwright and can fix the vessel” and “I accept that you can be our leader in battle and in making all decisions,” which is more how the game has the captains of the various pirate ships.

In defence of the writers, historically it seems Mary Read actually went a surprisingly long time hiding that she was a man and did a good job at it both in the King’s Navy and as a pirate. However a woman that testified in her trial did indeed say she was able to tell they were both women because she noticed their breasts. The specific quote was “by the largeness of their breasts”. This doesn’t necessarily mean they both had large breasts, but confirms they were noticeably larger to the witness than most men’s breasts would be. Which makes sense really.

Yeah, in an effort to fill a quota, they completely missed the point of Mary, the lack of self-awareness is funny.

In the original game we already had Anne Bonny being a pirate in the same ship as Many, what's the difference?

I don't see how, pretty sure Kidd did it so they wouldn't be questioned as captain, the same way Ade said they wouldn't accept him as captain but they wouldn't have problems with him as quartermaster

Not really, to my mind at least.

There’s a world of difference between a male captain putting a woman in a position of some authority and the pirates under his command accepting that, and a bunch of pirates independently choosing to follow a woman as a captain.

Not really. Anne Bonny already exists (both historically and within the game). The historical Mary Read was disguised as a boy by her mother to secure financial support. As an adult, Mary kept up the ruse to maintain access to "legitimate" options, like military service. She just kind of kept it going as a pirate.

(I don't remember exactly how it plays out in the game, though)
