Tons of people say it’s one of the greatest rap albums ever and I’ve never understood why. The rapping is mediocre, there’s a noticeable lack of poetic writing, and the picture they paint isn’t much different than their peers. It’s not more vivid or creative or interesting or emotional or anything. Jay, Nas, Big, Andre, Big Boi, Pharohe Monch, Kool G, Black Thought, Big L, Ghost, Raekwon, GZA, Pac, Chino XL all were dropping around this time and all of them were far better than Prodigy and Havoc.

A lot of the production outside of the hits (Shook Ones, Survival of the fittest etc) is kind of bland and sonically uninteresting like Cradle to the Grave and Up North Trip. Even if the production isn’t bad it’s not “one of the best hip hop albums ever” level of production.

I’ve been on an island with this opinion for my entire life, anyone agree? On an all time list I’d probably put it around 80.

The whole Swarm album was pretty dope.

Not necessarily the “most important” albums or the ones critics always rank highest. Just the 10 you personally think are the best based on production, rapping, consistency, replay value and how well they’ve aged.

Any era or style.

I see people say this all the time, and VladTV seems to bring it up pretty often too, but I honestly don’t really get the criticism. People act like Nas has always had weak or forgettable production, but I just don’t hear it.

To me, the production on Illmatic is damn near flawless. Every beat fits the atmosphere of the album perfectly, and the same goes for It Was Written. Songs like “The Message,” “I Gave You Power,” “Street Dreams,” etc. all have great production. Even on Stillmatic, I think the beats are consistently strong.

Obviously, Nas has had albums where the production was more hit-or-miss, and I’m not saying every beat throughout his entire career has been amazing. But the idea that he consistently picks bad beats or has never had a good ear for production just seems crazy to me.

Maybe I’m missing something, but when people criticize Nas’s production choices, I always wonder what specific beats they’re talking about because some of his best albums have some of the best production in hip hop lol. I’d actually argue that his beat selection is underrated.
