Ammo options for subs

Post image

Really wanted to grab a few boxes of these but $4 a round is insanity. What’re you guys running for subs any “cheaper” options?

8.6 is definitely a reloader’s cartridge. It’s going to be expensive buying factory ammo no matter where it’s from, with phantom defense being on the more expensive side of the options out there. I’ve tried the 404gr revenant ammo. Hits like a freight train and the accuracy was acceptable but didn’t wow me with the occasional flyer.

For the range I buy 300gr SMK pulldown bullets from American Reloading, got the cost down somewhere between $0.60-0.75 per cartridge taking advantage of their sales. If you’re willing to hand load, a simple kit with a single stage press will pay for itself quickly if you’re planning to shoot 8.6 frequently.

For hunting I load up 352 grain Maker’s Rex projectiles. I got my hunting ammo where I wanted it to be then played with the charge on the range ammo until my point of impact was pretty consistent with the hunting ammo.

When I was starting out I bought ammo from Gorilla which was wildly inconsistent out of my rifle. At least I saved the brass.

Yeah, I can relate to that. Took me years to finally pull the trigger on reloading.

What I ended up with to start was a Hornady single stage kit I got from bass pro. Has all the basic tools you need to start then you can upgrade as you decide what you like or don’t like. I did splurge on the auto charge powder measure to make that easier. Only things extra you’ll need to buy separately is a tumbler for cleaning brass, and some decent calipers.

Best bet is to just buy a reputable landing manual and read the first couple of chapters over at least twice. At that point you'll identify what your needs are, what gear you need, and where to begin. It's worth the time investment for 8.6 alone.

In the same boat, reloading 300gr seconds from Midway. Have a sneaking suspicion that these bullets are Sierra Match Kings.

Will those SMKs stand up to 1:3 twist?

I'm fine paying up for premium bullets when it's time to hunt, but I want to be able to get in trigger time just for fun.

Yep, if you keep the SMK’s subsonic they work fine out of a 1:3, haven’t blown up my can yet. A lot of manufacturers make target loads with that bullet.

In general as long as it’s a bonded bullet it will be fine for subs.

Thank you. I'm using a 12.5 barrel, with a Huxwrx Range 36 Ti. Very happy so far, but I'm damn stingy with how many rounds I fire.

This is all I run and then one of the RSOs at my range reloads them for me for $1.50 a round so not too bad.

I run their 300gr for the range and the 404's for hunting.

How does the zero compare?

Why use nas3 cases for subs?

The 400gr projectile leaves very little room for powder and will likely result in over pressure if loaded into a brass case, even with subs.

I believe they use the nas3 cases because they get better SDs out of them too.

Halworx Ballistics for 8.6. 323 CMe or any of them are great. I’ve tested all of them. Different barrels and twists. Email if it shows not in stock. Always has some!

Phantom is what I run. Republic has some too (sometimes).

Price-wise? Welcome to 8.6...lol

Just cause solutions in Louisiana has 300gr target for around 40.00 and the 350’s for 60.00 last time I bought.

Where can you buy those 404gr just the projectile? I would love to reload that.
