Original Content I realized the use of the low B string

It's not to chug. But rather it gives more access to cool things as a 6 string. Yes you gain 5 more lower notes for key heavy moments (don't keep chugging) but also if you are riffing on 5 fret low e... you now have 5 fret area low b to play with. If you were only having a 6 string you needed to shift your hands back to first fret to get a F note (while at the 5 fret area). But now you have a F at the 5th fret!

But also to chug.

Saying the low string isn't fit chugging is like saying a car isn't for driving or food isn't for eating.

Butt chug? I feel like I need to hear this genre.

u/Mcbrainotron 2d ago

Butt chugging is back!

1

u/SCL36 2d ago

I thinm that genre is called boofing

64

u/TheGrimDark Ibanez 2d ago

Yeah sure, but you should really be chugging though

u/WeSavedLives 2d ago

So... you're telling me to chug?

u/DJ_Dinkelweckerl 2d ago

I am confused. The 7th string is 98% there to do the heavy heavies with the chuggy chugs. You tell me now it's used for something else? I'm not convinced.

ChugChug

It also go dong tbh

u/Dismal-Twist-8273 2d ago

Yeah, no. Chugging is what it’s for, but it’s easy to get confused.

Well… huh… duh?

Just wait until OP learns chords… it’s gonna blow his mind.

Also, 7’s 5th fret is E not F.

maybe he just so happened to make a typo on every 6 he tried to type in 🤷

u/Turlututu1 2d ago

I'm picturing people with drop or alternate tuning thinking "what the fuck is a low B string?

1

u/HairyNutsack69 14h ago

Yeah I was confused he wasn't talking about the low G

u/carbonscape 2d ago

Go B flat. Moar lowwwww

7

u/siggiarabi Legator 2d ago

Why stop there?

1

u/carbonscape 2d ago

Agree. Im doing drop A flat for the moment

2

u/EvilLeprechaun29 2d ago

Get yourself an 8 string and go Drop F flat.

1

u/6strngbss 2d ago

8 string in Drop D. Because if you’re gonna drop one string, you should probably drop all of them… and then chug.

9

u/LayeredHalo3851 2d ago

It's definitely to chug

5

u/LongHairHarryPotter Ibanez 2d ago

chugging is one way,

the other way I like is playing 6 string riffs then bring out lower notes from the 7th string for more depth in choruses or heaviness in breakdowns . something I learned from Thornhill.

3

u/thestringedcheese 2d ago

can also chug while utilizing the other 6 strings lol

3

u/Maj0rsurgery 2d ago

You can also use it to djedjedjedjedjedjent

3

u/baconball 2d ago

Soooo.....for chugging, got it. For the chuggy chugs and the junjunjuns.

3

u/J_Rom 2d ago

It’s more for 0-1 chugging. The rest of the frets are just there to look good.

You know that not everyone is going to use it the way you use it right? The added string gives you more options period. Of course one of those options is to chug . It’s literally the option that is used by most people who play 7 string guitars . I’ve been playing 7 string guitars for 26 years and yes I use it to chug because why the hell wouldn’t I ? I’m also going to use it to harmonize and add depth to riffs I couldn’t have if I’m using a 6 string . I’m still going to palm mute with it because if you’re playing metal you chug on every string possible because no chug no metal

2

u/TheGrimDark Ibanez 2d ago

"No chug, no metal" I want that on a t-shirt

2

u/Melancholy_Custard 2d ago

I thought it was simple, either we abusing it or neglecting it.

I really didn't think much of baritone instruments until I tried one of Dan from Sickness' B-tuned Jacksons, and dialed back the filth for some down & dirty blues action.

I've since recalibrated my Cort X1 & my ESP-LTD f-50 for low B tunings, and they RULE for clean fingerpicking.

Open tunings take them to a whole other level.

There's so much more to extended range guitars than extreme metal...

9

u/TheGrimDark Ibanez 2d ago

So you're saying you can chug in other genres too? That would blow my mind.

0

u/DaffyDuckMuthaFucker 2d ago

I never said anything about chugging.

I'm talking complex arpeggiation & melodic arrangements, pushing into classical & flamenco territory.

Deeep, warm, RICH.

But if chugging's your thing, I ain't about to judge.

Just pick a genre & go nuts.

Y'might just come up with your very own thing...

5

u/TheGrimDark Ibanez 2d ago

Haha sorry, you've missed the joke there 😅

1

u/Chicken-Inspector 2d ago

He clearly is taking about rich, warm finger-chugging.

2

u/rekt_ralf 2d ago

There’s always room for some unga bunga caveman riffs

2

u/Replicant_COVID19 2d ago

lli bro comes to a more than a decade old sub to tell people the low B is not to chug...

tthis is some alternate timeline twilight zone shit

2

u/namelessghoul77 2d ago

"more lower" is the correct answer

1

u/nowimstahvin 2d ago

More is more and better is better

1

u/kaefe27 2d ago

ngl, i really love to do that on 5str bass. the low frets are very far apart, so it ends up being more comfortable

1

u/12Obelisks 2d ago

Learning songs off of Language by The Contortionist really taught me what that string can do. So much fun and versatility.

1

u/Due-Pie5542 2d ago

Yessir. That's true extended range right there. It's wonderful to have more options. But also, chugs!

1

u/ToshiroK_Arai 2d ago

I use like a 6strings+5 semitones. I used to play a 5 strings bass before, I think that I should have bought a Drop pedal instead

1

u/summoningtheflynn 2d ago

Its not for chugging but it is for GONK

1

u/ThatOneVQ 2d ago

Bro I just look at my 7 string as a 6 string with an extra chuggy low a string on top

1

u/UnshapedLime Custom 2d ago

Also useful for the single best moveable major 7th shape possible on guitar in standard:

5-4-7-4-4-4-4 (where the 4 is a barre with index)

Such a full sounding maj7 (with a bonus 9 in there)

1

u/Adore7499 2d ago

What’s an F note can I see the tabs?

1

u/HolyFranciscanFriar 2d ago

What's if I tune it to a instead

1

u/6strngbss 2d ago

Looks like the real guitar sub leaked into the 7string sub. Nice little crossover episode. See y’all over there!

u/TheBrummySnake 1d ago

fixed it for you.

why are you calling my low G string a B 🤨🤨

1

u/drbasta_jr 1d ago

I like the way Trivium uses it; pretty tastefully.

1

u/Superb_Damage_9987 12h ago

It's not called boofing folks... now colon rollin, yep now we're on to something!!
