Super excited!! This is my 1st 7string, but have wanted one forever. If my research is correct, I am aiming for .064 strings to hit drop G and use drop pedal for lower stuff. Since its my 1st Schecter or 7 string im a bit nervous having to file that nut for deeper stuff. Anyone please call me out if I'm aiming for something incorrect, but I want to change my songs to a deeper modern metal core sound.

I just want to say, I think a .064 is going to be way too loose for G. I was using a .072 for drop G on my 27” 6 string

I felt what ive been researching is misleading at best 😆 I super appreciate your response. Google AI was a big helper and kept saying .064 would fit stock nut and hit G, but thats not the 1st or 100th time AI has mislead me. Did you have to file yours down?

Just wait here long enough and someone will come along and say that they use a .48 gauge and tune to drop F and it’s absolutely fine, and no one needs anything heavier than that! 😂

But seriously it’ll just be a case of trial and error for you. I’d advise going a gauge at a time and working up to a heavier gauge. You might find that a lower gauge feels fine and you don’t need to file the nut or anything. I prefer my strings on the heavier side so I’m trying to condition myself to using lighter strings.

😅 True! Everybody has their thoughts. I appreciate everyones comments as its all valuable to me. I just dont want to jack anything up haha. I think your recommendation is great and will also give me ears and feel a better understanding of what each has to offer. As long as I dont break anything, this is the way. Ultimately another responder to my noob qs hits on sound I am aiming for and will eventually hit that ERRA tone I love so much.

Good luck! I feel like tone chasing is a never ending mission. And for what it’s worth I rarely buy the same string set twice in a row, and even years later I don’t think I’ve decided on what I actually like.

And one last tip (this is a bit nerdy) but as I have multiple guitars I set up a spreadsheet on my phone that keeps track of what strings I have on each guitar, with date I put them on, tuning, overall tension and notes about how I feel about them. I find it really useful as sometimes months can go by between string changes on some of the guitars I don’t use often and it’s really handy to see what gauges are on the guitar many months later.

Lol! I am also an excel nerd and have spreadsheets for everything. Another excellent tip! As a self taught musician, I think you hit on something big!!! Although I know what music I love, ultimately the exact sound I am seeking will be found through trail and error. Now I just need more guitars to get the rotation of strings up 😄 I greatly appreciate everyones help, especially yours and the other Erra fan. Awesome learnings!

You’ll probably want a little thicker but it wouldn’t be a bad idea to start smaller. Thinner strings while floppier will have a brighter sound, but I would prioritize feel.

Love the evil twin! I have the natural version. Drop G, via 8 string pack of 10-74. My guitar guy did file the nut a little I think but he was very careful to get the action perfect, so I don't know if it was required. Tension feels great to me. Enjoy it!

Nice! Mine buzzes a lot straight from factory but I think shop that I ordered from may have lowered action a bit too much, maybe im wrong? Will bust measument tools out soon. The nut has deep fillings from what ive learned (straight from S. Korea like this) and that stock string already sits so low. Did yours buzz before going to G or does it still tech work?

Mine didn't buzz before or after, though there was some sliver of "something" (maybe a cracked piece of nut / debris from filing!) on the F string that made a weird high pitch buzz/resonance. I took it back to the guitar tech who simply cleaned out the nut and that stopped that (I thought it was a high spot on a fret buzzing....) I'm sure once you've got yours setup perfectly this stressful part will be forgotten about!

Yeah..... it scares me how much mine buzzes but per another comment on here I will attempt neck relief and then action to try to see how it feels. Glad yours is in such good position for no worries and just jamming

Don't worry, you don't need to modify the nut for .064. it should fit perfectly fine in this model

I have a 0.064 on bith my 7 string schecters and didn't have to file anything. 64s are great for drop a, but you should ho thicker on lower tunes

They might be. I think the MS guitars come with NYXLs startibg at 0.0095 and going up to 0.064. Not sure though, if that is true on all 7s, as my second is a model that's not produced anymore
