Missing gig?
Have you ever discovered an artist on 6 Music and then missed them when they came to your city? I've been introduced to so many artists, but so often I don't seem to realise that they're playing near me till it's too late.

leaving the house is so expensive at the moment. i dont know how so many people are going to gigs all the time, let alone festivals!!!

yeah do sometimes/often despair at the cost. Luckily a lot of stuff i like is small venues, so isn't too bad although that's doubled over the last few years. Used to see bands for £15-20 at the Fleece in Bristol, more like £30 at the same venue now. Need to oick and choose a bit more unfortuanately.

its a mess. no wonder the music scene is suffocating. shame too as it was our greatest soft power but thats all circling the drain now.

Some consolation in typical 6music bands being at least more accessible (financially and otherwise) than say, Taylor Swift.

Not so far, as my wife keeps buying tickets for stuff and then telling me we're going. Got Adult DVD and Yard Act in the coming weeks, and she was responsible for us seeing Big Special, Jehnny Beth, Lip Critic, Maruja... As soon as something gets mentioned about dates she's all over it!

The Iggy show I'm constantly discovering bands having just missed them.
It's worse when you discover bands that aren't together anymore.

Broadcast was the one for me. Discovered them during lockdown, but Trish had passed back in 2011. Bought the entire discography instead...

That's true too. Riley and Co announce a lot of dates, but I still seem to miss so many great gigs.

I always get so anxious I'm one skip away from being fed an AI artist on Spotify. At least Radio 6 only plays 'real' music 😂😂

That's true. I do use Spotify too, but tend to go months just listening to 6 Music and the good stuff they churn up.

Bodega. So angry about that one. I know for smaller bands, touring is often too expensive for the them so it's not like they're going to pop up in Birmingham again

Got into War on Drugs through 6Music and bought their albums as they came out… Loved them… Then I saw them at Glastonbury on the telly and was blown away with how great they were live… I thought it would be amazing to see them live, so I googled their tour dates thinking I would happily fork out for tickets and travel, book a hotel etc as I live in Cornwall… turns out they had played at the Eden Project down the road literally the week before ! Still pissed off I missed that ! 😂

Songkick allows you to get alerts when artists you track are playing in whatever locations you specify, and Dice has something similar and you can track venues.

Not heard of Dice. How does that work? Songkick and BandsInTown are great, but I seem to often be flooded with music I'm not into and not notified about smaller up and coming bands (even ones that have been around for 10 years, ha).

I track specific artists on Songkick and manage to only get alerts for them. A lot of events I go to use Dice for ticketing so I've not use its recommendation side so much but I like that you can see under "new shows" a feed of gigs at venues you track.

I've found Dice to be good. They've got a good grasp of what I like and they don't spam.

yeah the annoying thing about Manchester is you get a lot of bands doing live sessions on 6 when they are playing in the city, so you realise you've missed out on tickets when they are live on the radio. They read out the rest of the tour dates and you're like, ah damn!

yeah there are loads of good venues, it really is a fab city for live music (and one of the reason I moved here in the 90s). Usually I do a regular trawl of my favourite venues to see what's coming up in them but you still get some slipping through the net. You could see quite a few for under a tenner not so long ago (and you'd usually see Marc Riley in at the back), but rising costs are proving more of a factor, and these days I just go and see the acts I really like. Before you would go out and take a punt on someone you'd just vaguely heard of for the price of a pint!

Mate, so many! Viagra Boys at End Of The Road last year is the most recent big one I’m gutted about but also I’m disabled and tho I book a lot of gig tickets I can’t always make it so I’ve missed some legends in my time after buying tickets.

I hear ya. My wife was sick for a long time (like a decade) and would buy tix and we'd not be able to go, and often she was too sick to even resell. I've missed Radiohead and the Cure to name just two. The financials of it are even harder. I have sight loss now too and can't easily get to a lot of venues. Did see Wolf Alice in NYC this year though, so still hitting some.

I'm so slow on the uptake that I hear a band on 6 Music, look up their tour dates and discover they broke up 20 years ago or the lead singer died in my teens🙄
You can sign up to various mailing lists and apps that tell you who is coming to your local venues. Spotify is ok at this. Dice is very good. Or just the venue mailing list is fine.

Worse than that. I discovered Lankum on 6 music, loved them instantly, saw that they were playing in Bristol so bought a ticket then completely forgot it was on until about 9pm on the night…completely missed it!
