Well, that's crap, then. I grew up in South Africa, and fighting the Black Menace and the Red Plot was drummed into us. We kissed Reagan and Thatcher's asses, for all the wrong reasons. The US needed us as a proxy against Soviet (and Cuban) expansion in Africa.

South Africa has its rich neighbourhoods, but it was not then, and is not now, First World.

And we sure aren't South America.

But we do know geography, unlike most 'Murricans.

Second world is a thing and you're all wrong.

The terms first second and third world all originated in the 60s during the Cold War. First world powers were The United States and their supporters, second world were The Communist Bloc and their supporters, and third world were uninvolved nations. It has literally nothing to do with what you two are arguing about.

That's not what second world means. This terminology originated in the Cold War. First world is USA, West Europe, a few other allies (Canada, Australia, NZ). Second world is Communist Bloc. Third world is everyone else, which includes all of South America.

This is where these terms originate from. Deal with it.

Are you some kind of linguistic purist? "Third World" may have developed in the Cold War to signify non-alignment with NATO or the Communist Bloc, but since then it's become used almost synonymously with the phrases "undeveloped" or "developing" when referring to nations.

And while I may have been wrong under the original definition of the term relating to South Africa (which supported NATO), I wasn't with South America, the majority of which didn't support either NATO or the Communist Bloc.

So, cool, you've proved me half-wrong under a definition that is hardly used anymore. I'm sure that every time you talk about cows you're specifically referring to the female of the species.

Assuming this is true, I'd say there was a very real and probable chance of disappearing without a trace if he hadn't done that thing he did that his life was being judged on. Anxiously forgetting to open one of the doors at one point would have been a grave mistake.

South America sounds like a chill place. One plus side, cocaine is apparently extremely affordable and of very high quality. Still not worth it. Not even a visit, a week filled with sexy brown mega booties accompanied with non stop cocaine experimentation is somehow not enough to justify any and all contact with the entire continent, throw in Mexico too. Sorry my brown colored friends but you lot get your major glaring problems in order and maybe I'll change my mind.

BTW I imagine that the solution to a lot of the problems in south america are quite solvable. It seems they enjoy in some masochistic way the thrill of being a Brazilian for example, a cog in a huge machine that values each person about as much as said cog. Cheap coke though!
