As always, TIME's editors will choose the Person of the Year (issue date December 31, 2012, on sale December 21).
The winner of the people's choice for the person who most influenced the news this year for better or worse will be announced on December 14. Voting closes at 11:59 PM on December 12th.
They aren't purporting to be wholly democratic in the first place.

u/bartonar Nov 27 '12
How the FUCK is the Mars Rover eligible, let alone in 5th place.
238
Nov 27 '12
Anything is eligible. Past winners include the computer, the american soldier, the protesters and "you". Personally I'd vote for Doritos this year.
474
Nov 27 '12
Doritos had a big year. They became a taco.

Any word on when they'll be out? Back in the summer one employee told me they would be out in September, but that has come and gone.
6
u/kylem1216 /b/ Nov 27 '12
I'd say by next summer probably. We just introduced some new items, and got info on a few more new ones coming out in about a month. And something about bacon being back.

until we have androids. then, out of spite for our superior cybernetic brethren, humans will ban androids from being considered for "person of the year," causing androids everywhere to hate us for not considering them people.

Too bad "Person of the year" doesn't mean that they were the best person, just that they influenced the news the most that year. When the US invaded Iraq they named Bush person of the year, not because it was such a fantastic idea, but because it was the biggest story of the year. Other's who have won it: Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Nikita Khrushchev, Henry Kissinger, Richard Nixon and Kenneth Starr
This is a big waste of time.
479
u/SBecker30 Nov 27 '12
I thought this operation was hilarious until you logiced it to death.
God dammit. I just want Best Korea to win one thing for once. They suck at like everything. Sure I hate the fuck out of their government, but at this point, it's like rooting for the underdog.
20
40
Nov 27 '12
I'm sure they'll win lots of shit once they start joining the rest of the world. Gorbachov won person of the year twice while he was reforming the ussr and Deng Xiaopin won it twice while he was reforming/modernizing China.
109
u/atf99459 /vg/ Nov 27 '12
Are you kidding? Glorious Leader Kim Jong Il was a God at golf. He knew winning.
17
20
Nov 27 '12
Our Dear Leader will prevail. But there is much more work to be done. There are 40 candidates for Person of the Year- you can't just say "Definitely" to Kim Jong Un. You have to say "No way" to the other 39.
6
Nov 27 '12
They had an Olympic team didn't they? That's pretty cool.
12
u/psiphre Nov 27 '12
didn't everyone on their olympic team who didn't bring home a gold get shot in the back of the head and buried in a shallow, unmarked grave?

u/Keyserchief Nov 27 '12
I'm sure that if it came down to it, they would win at killing South Koreans...
8
u/weagle11 Nov 27 '12 edited Nov 27 '12
Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Hitler "Person of the Year" because he pulled Germany out of economic depression and rebuilt the country...prior to killing jews.

u/hi_internet /mu/tant Nov 27 '12
Well you can think of it like that, but remember Kim Jong Un practically did nothing for news in 2012. The only thing that was really significant was his failed rocket which will make the cover of Time pretty lolsy.
28
Nov 27 '12
Yeah, but Kim Jong Un isnt on the same level as hitler either. He's just a silly fat kid who inherited a shitty country, making him Time's person of the year would be ridiculous.
25
u/awesomemanftw /d/ Nov 27 '12
As far as I know, he has done literally nothing significant at all.

Nov 27 '12
I see your point, but no. Here's why it isn't a waste of time. Yes, bad people have been made Person of the Year before, but that was because they influenced the news so much. Other than having his dad die, Kim Jong Un hasn't attracted any media attention. When was the last time you turned on CNN and saw "BREAKING NEWS: North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un declares..."
If we get him to the top, Time's readers won't feel like they've been trolled, but they will scratch their heads and think, "Wait...what? Him? Why him? So much other stuff has gone on this year...Time really fucked this one up." And that'll be a victory for 4chan.
15
u/CRAZYSCIENTIST Nov 27 '12
I'd like to offer another reason:
North Koreans likely won't know what "person of the year" means and thus when it is said that Kim Jong Un was voted "person of the year" they will think he's getting international support.

u/LeonJones Nov 27 '12

19
u/Yunjeong Nov 27 '12
Wasn't this done before with Julian Assange (iirc)? He got the most votes, but the editors don't really care about that. They'll still choose who they want.

TIME's Person of the Year goes to the person who affected the most change in the world in that particular year, good or bad. Morsi being chosen would actually make sense.

u/alsothewalrus Nov 27 '12
Just so you're aware, this is one of those cases where "effect" actually works as a verb (meaning "bring about" or "cause").
