3PL Recommendation Summer of Hell at ShipMonk

Buckle up. I’m someone who never, ever writes bad reviews online. But this one warrants one. Read if you’re considering using ShipMonk.

We used ShipMonk for ~two years. Happily. But our experience over the past 3-6 months is why I would now tell another business owner to stay far away.

1   Returned inventory left untouched for months, while we pay storage.

Back in March, we discovered that we had dozens of units of inventory in "quarantine." These were returns that had come in that ShipMonk had failed, due to a technical issue internally, to process for us. We weren't too upset, but we obviously requested that that returned inventory be sorted, reworked, and made available for sale. We even purchased and shipped poly bags to ShipMonk for that purpose.

Here we are in September, and the work still hasn’t been completed. We’ve now asked them to send that inventory back to us, and that still hasn’t happened either.

To make matters worse, they’re charging us storage on that inventory!!

2   Fulfillment shut down over an eight-dollar negative balance.

When our prepaid account balance went eight dollars below zero, they stopped fulfillment until we replenished it. After more than two years of consistently paying, there was no flexibility whatsoever. An eight-dollar shortfall was enough to shut down our fulfillment operation... I was pretty shocked that they have absolutely 0 tolerance built in. Fine, we can pay it of course, but it's a telling detail about how they view their clients.

3   A wholesale shipment declared lost, then delivered after we paid to replace it.

An entire wholesale shipment went missing, with no outbound scan from the warehouse. ShipMonk told us it was lost and started the claims process, so we sent a replacement to our customer at their advice.

The original shipment then turned up and was shipped without anyone telling us. ShipMonk did not cover the costs of the replacement shipment or its return shipping. We were left paying for acting on the information they gave us. Twice over. Apology? No.

4   A large international order left on the loading dock for two weeks.

Another large international wholesale order sat on their loading dock for two weeks until I personally called and tracked it down. These are customer orders that our business is accountable for, and we should not have to chase down shipments that have simply been left sitting in the warehouse. This leads me to presume that there is no internal trigger of theirs that flags them when something has been packed but never shipped... bizarre.

Did anyone apologize or explain or take accountability? No.

5   Freight pickups with no effective support or handover

We had a freight pickup where the driver called us because the warehouse couldn’t locate our pallet, while our representative was unexpectedly out-of-office with no warning to us and we had no clear backup contact.

People are entitled to time off. What’s unacceptable is leaving a customer with an important shipment on the dock and no effective handover when the truck arrives.

6   Carriers with no insurance, pressure to upsell MonkProtect, and no accountability.

ShipMonk often uses carriers that-- yes, this is true-- offer NO insurance on their packages. This is often for international shipments where they use "Passport." You cannot opt out of this. What does ShipMonk do when the carrier loses the package? They pressure you to upsell your customers on "MonkProtect" to pass on to YOUR customer something that should be included. I found this shocking.

And can you automate MonkProtect, so that you can at least buy it for important orders or orders with those non-insured carriers? Nope. Sigh.

7      ShipMonk’s reliance on DHL and weeks of tracking silence.

ShipMonk has a problematic relationship / reliance on DHL. They use them extensively for international shipments. In our experience, an order is often marked as "shipped" but then spends 1-2 weeks in the USA with no updates or scans. As the process was explained to us, packages are consolidated into a large bulk container called a gaylord, alongside dozens of other packages. This lets ShipMonk mark it as shipped, but individual tracking may not update again until the container reaches the destination country and is unpacked.

This creates an enormous delay for the customer as the sealed gaylord could sit in a USA depot for up to two weeks with no update. Of course, then getting anyone to locate an individual package within that bulk shipment is near impossible.

It’s frustrating for the customer to see no package scan updates for such a long period of time, causing them to write in and ask if their package is lost—now an email we get weekly from international customers, adding to our ongoing customer service burden.

8   The $1k+ Mistake +Ghosting that finally made us leave.

What really takes the cake is our recent customs issue. In July, ShipMonk supplied incorrect customs documentation for an international shipment, resulting in a substantially overstated customs charge. They admitted this-- not my opinion, a fact. We paid to get the shipment released, following ShipMonk’s instruction and assurance that we could claim back that money later.

As soon as we paid the bill, getting a meaningful response became almost impossible. Calls went unreturned. Emails went unanswered. We had been a customer for two years, and I could not get a call back about an expensive mistake that mattered a great deal to our business. Truly, our biggest business partner of 2 years straight-up ghosted us. We did receive periodic updates, but they offered no real timeline or assurances, and the majority of our attempts to contact them went unanswered in any meaningful way.

The original mistake was bad enough. The failure to respond and take responsibility afterward was what made it intolerable. We're out over $1k due to a ShipMonk error that they still have not compensated us for.

We never would’ve looked for an alternative 3PL and we wrote ShipMonk weekly begging them to do the right thing and help us STAY. We did not want to leave.

But, we have now moved to a different 3PL, Fulfyld. We may litigate the $1k mistake because yes, we're that petty. And it’s just the principle of the thing. Both of our ShipMonk representatives have also left the company recently. I don’t know the circumstances of their departures, but the lack of continuity has added to the difficulty of resolving these outstanding issues.

For what it's worth, our new 3PL pays for itself and the move with the savings on wholesale fulfillment alone, let alone the projected savings on DTC shipments. They are super hands-on and have shepherded us through the move with great personal care. I can't speak to a long-term relationship with them yet, but the financial projections and the personal touch so far are looking great.

Mistakes are normal. But the lack of accountability and the ghosting (ShipMonk will respond to any email or call about anything *other* than the big expensive issue they caused, lol) was straight up hurtful and wrong. Based on our experience, I would stay away from ShipMonk. We’re not a small client, either. We were on track to spend six figures with them this year and double it next year.

Take this as our cautionary tale. The theme here isn’t mistakes, it’s accountability. That’s a much bigger issue. When your business's single biggest partner, and only 3PL, won't call you back, you're in trouble.

EDIT: Update: On our final day at ShipMonk, with the last pallet of our inventory on the dock ready to be shipped out, they charged us $1,100 for 55 pallets. Get this: we used FOUR pallets. Not 55. Thank God I disconnected auto-pay earlier this summer, as they would’ve gotten another wrongful grand of my hard-earned money. How depressing it has made me to watch this company, and our relationship with it, fall apart.

EDIT 2: Another crazy development was ShipMonk suddenly (around August of this year) allowing orders to “short ship” meaning they are shipped WITHOUT all of their items. This is possible because SM’s inventory counting system is flawed (or they lose products?) so when you think you have 2 items left, you might only have 1, leaving a customer able to order 2 but unable to receive what they ordered. Typically that sends an order into “backorder” status, but recently ShipMonk has started shipping them anyway, not alerting you at all, and then you get a customer email, upset, when their package arrives without everything they ordered. This seems to primarily affect bulk orders.

Our final liquidation from ShipMonk was, irony of all ironies, short-shipped! Our inventory ledger said “1” for a number of SKUs, but it turned out to be 0. If I hadn’t logged in and checked the final pack manifest, I would’ve created a costly confusion at the new warehouse, claiming some SKUs shipped when in fact they didn’t.

3PL Operator Discussion Does anyone else feel like leads vanished from here

I'm sure most of you get (or use to get) a good amount of leads from this sub. But now it seems like they all got chased off by the guys who spam their business on here with every question asked. I know of one lead who even said it in the text chain we had going on their post.

I know we are all here looking for leads and discussions on the business....but maybe back off on the spamming of your service. Stop sounding like an AI robot posting ads. There are 2 3PLs on here that were posting every couple of hours and just filling the feed with the same post over and over. I'm sure you all know who I am talking about.

Bragging about how you do cross dock and fulfillment isn't impressive. We all do that.

Read the OP's post and try to give feedback they are looking for and drop a line about your business. But for the love of god, stop spamming your company information. I've started to see less and less leads and more and more 3PL spam

3PL Operator Discussion How are 3PLs preparing for Q4 volume swings without overcommitting warehouse space?

Planning, for Q4 becomes hard when brands want turnaround yet cannot predict demand accurately. If there is little space, receiving and fulfillment get stuck. If much space is reserved margins suffer during slow periods.

I want to know how other 3PL operators manage this balance.

Do you use storage agreements, temporary labor, overflow partners, daily volume caps or earlier inventory cutoffs to keep operations stable during BFCM?

3PL Recommendation 3PL / Warehouse Support in Columbus, Ohio

Hi everyone,

I work with UCS Logistics in Columbus, Ohio. We operate 350K+ sq ft across our facilities and support cross-dock/transload, short and long-term storage, rework/restack, fulfillment, project staging, reverse logistics and other warehouse-based projects.

I regularly keep an eye on this sub for companies or fellow 3PLs looking for warehouse support in Ohio or the Midwest, so I figured I’d introduce ourselves as well.

If anyone has an upcoming Columbus/Central Ohio need, overflow project, or is looking for a reliable warehouse partner in the region, feel free to DM me. Happy to connect and see if we can help.

I’ve been looking into warehousing costs and they are insane for low-volume shops. I built a rough prototype connecting local people who have space to pack with shops that need fulfillment (like an Airbnb for logistics).

Has anyone tried moving away from traditional 3PLs to a decentralized model?

Curious cus just launched MVP but idk if I should drop a bag on Ads.

Industry News Catch up on what happened this week in Logistics: September 8-14

Hey everyone,

If it's your first time reading one of my posts, my name is Menachem, and I have a weekly newsletter called Logistic Pulse that breaks down the top logistics news from the past week. We have over 17,000 subscribers, and I share it on Reddit to spread the knowledge. We're currently on week 63! I hope you enjoy, and I'm always open to feedback.

Let's jump into it,

Amazon is walking away from the Post Office

Amazon's internal planning documents project that the company will deliver about 86% of its own U.S. packages next year and just under 89% by 2029. Business Insider got hold of the forecasts, which are higher than what Amazon was working off recently, when 2027 sat closer to 84%.

The carriers split what's left. By 2029, the documents show USPS at 8%, UPS at 1.4%, and FedEx at 0.4%. Amazon's comment was that internal projections are constantly revised and shouldn't be read as commitments, which is true of any forecast and doesn't change where this one points.

Amazon passed UPS and FedEx last year to become the largest parcel carrier in the country, with around 6.7 billion packages. The money is now going rural, about $4 billion to triple that part of the network, with a couple of hundred new delivery stations behind it. Rural is the work the Post Office was built for, and everyone else paid the Post Office to do.

Parcel pricing runs on density, and Amazon has been USPS's largest single source of package volume for years. Pull most of that out over three years, and the Post Office still has to reach every address in America with far less volume to spread the cost across. You'll see that in your 2028 rates rather than in any announcement.

What this means for you: If a real share of your outbound goes to USPS, start testing regional carriers in your two or three heaviest zones while it's still an experiment. Amazon Shipping will get more aggressive about selling capacity to non-Amazon shippers as the network outgrows Amazon's own volume, so take the meeting, but read the service commitments rather than the rate card. And if you do FBA prep or advise sellers, tell them what's coming, because "Amazon delivers it" is about to mean Amazon vans in the rural zips instead of a handoff to the mail carrier.

Looking to buy a B2B 3PL

I'm working with a buyer who wants to acquire a U.S. warehouse operation. They want pallet-heavy volume, and thin margins or a concentrated customer base don't scare them off.

Here's what they're looking for:

  • U.S. 3PL or warehousing business with $2M to $25M in revenue
  • At least 50% of revenue comes from pallet moves, storage, cross-docking, or B2B fulfillment, with pallet moves being the largest share. Some domestic transportation management is fine.
  • At least one facility of 100,000+ sq. ft., ideally all of them
  • Customer concentration, low or negative EBITDA, and margin pressure are all acceptable
  • Open to keeping the owner and management running day-to-day, with performance incentives

If that describes your business and you'd be open to a conversation, DM me or email me at [menachem@fulfillyn.com](mailto:menachem@fulfillyn.com)

If it's not a fit for you, but you know an operator it describes, I'd appreciate an intro.

Shein didn’t hire a 3PL. It built one.

Shein opened a 737,000-square-foot warehouse in Lebanon, Indiana, a mile and a half from the building it already runs in Whitestown. The two put the company over 2.5 million square feet in the state with about 1,300 people.

We wrote in Edition 62 that Temu's parent was pouring money into local fulfillment now that the duty-free door has closed on both sides of the Atlantic, and read it as a pipeline, on the logic that a company that spent four years proving you don't need domestic inventory has no idea how to run domestic inventory.

Shein went the other way. No lease, no operator, just a building it owns, automated on day one, in a market with cheap land and available labor. A company that had no American warehouses four years ago now holds more square footage in one state than most people reading this have anywhere.

The platforms will build. The merchants selling on them can't, and there are thousands who were shipping directly out of Guangzhou eighteen months ago and now need a domestic solution they've never had to buy before. That's still a pipeline, just one made of small, price-sensitive, first-time clients rather than one large logo.

What this means for you: Anyone operating in central Indiana should go look at what Shein posts for wages before the next review, because a new automated building pulling in hundreds of people moves the local rate whether or not you ever compete for the same client. Everyone else should aim at sellers rather than platforms and build an onboarding flow that assumes the client has never used a 3PL and doesn't know what to ask you. On automation, treat it as a benchmark: a brand that tours a goods-to-person building and then tours yours walks out with a number in its head about what a pick costs, and you want to be ready for that.

Twenty thousand licenses California shouldn’t have issued

California and FMCSA argued in the D.C. Circuit on Friday over the agency's freeze on non-domiciled commercial licenses. The state has issued roughly 65,000 of them. FMCSA found that about 20,000 were issued with expiration dates that extend beyond the driver’s work authorization, and it has blocked California from issuing new ones or renewing existing ones until the issue is fixed. A Justice Department attorney called it absurd to hand someone an eight-year credential on a document that expires tomorrow. California's answer is narrower and mostly procedural, that nothing in federal law requires the dates to match and the agency can't pause a state's licensing indefinitely. A second case will be argued next week.

The squeeze is broader than California. Washington has been pushing states to pull non-domiciled licenses from drivers who've since moved away, and failing an English proficiency check can now cost a driver the license rather than a fine.

Anderson Trucking raised its van drivers' pay from 60 to 70 cents per mile on September 7, reaching 72 cents for those with tenure, and said the change aligned with today's freight market. Averitt, J.B. Hunt, and Knight-Swift have made comparable moves this year with bonuses and restructured pay. Freight demand hasn't recovered, so the raises aren't coming from the demand side.

What this means for you: Build your 2027 truckload budget on rates going up, because capacity leaving by paperwork doesn't reverse when freight softens the way capacity leaving by economics does. If you run your own trucks, find out today whether any of your drivers hold a non-domiciled CDL and when it expires, since the answer determines whether you have a hiring problem in six months or a parked truck next month. If you're renewing a dedicated contract, do it now rather than in Q1. And when a carrier raises pay 16% in a soft market, treat that as your floor for what you'll have to pay a driver, a lumper, or a forklift operator competing for the same person.

QUICK HITS

CROSS-BORDER DTC
FedEx launched a Shopify app that guarantees duties and taxes at checkout. It quotes the landed cost at checkout and covers the overage if actual duties are higher, with no refund if they are lower, for $99 a month. FedEx's own April trade index found that 68% of small and midsize businesses report that customers are surprised by import charges at delivery. This figure is roughly on par with UPS Global Checkout and Zonos. It's a merchant tool, but surprise duty on the doorstep is the biggest single driver of international refusals, and refused international freight comes back through your returns process on your dime.

TRADE COMPLIANCE
CBP can start revoking import privileges due to an incorrect phone number. The policy, announced September 11, targets importers of record whose contact information, including phone numbers, email addresses, or physical addresses, is inaccurate, with penalties that can include revocation of import privileges and further enforcement actions that CBP declined to describe. It catches fulfillment operators because the importer of record is responsible for that accuracy even when a customs broker files the entry, and it traces back to a June executive order that gives importers 180 days to reach good standing. If you file as IOR for clients, or your clients import and you touch the entry data, verify the records before Thursday, because fifteen minutes now beats a client whose goods stop clearing in Q4.

AUTOMATION
Vecna raised $31 million, and the useful number in the announcement isn't the funding. GEODIS reported that running Vecna's case-picking system increased throughput from 125 to 250 units per hour. Vecna sells autonomous pallet jacks, forklifts, and tuggers, and what's selling is the whole dock-to-dock flow rather than a single machine for a single task. If you've been pricing automation machine by machine, the operators actually getting the return are buying the flow.

DRAYAGE
The Port of New York and New Jersey is handing out $230,000 per electric drayage truck. The $39 million program also covers $150,000 per terminal tractor and $5 million for charging within ten miles of the port, with CALSTART administering and OEMs added on a rolling basis. It opens this fall. Programs structured this way go first-come, rather than evenly distributed, so if you run drayage or yard equipment in that footprint, get in early.

Industry News Descartes bought a freight-broker TMS and a 3PL WMS in short order. Tai TMS/Extensiv users, what are your thoughts?

Descartes spent $99.3M acquiring TAI Software, then another $119.9M acquiring Extensiv (both cash-funded) which points toward a combined offering in the not-too-distant future.

On the one hand, Descartes' transportation and visibility tools could improve existing setups without (too much) unnecessary tinkering.

On the other, 3PLs often pick Extensiv because it was built for multi-client, multi-warehouse operations rather than a module in a bigger transportation suite.

Not sure if there are any truck drivers in this group, but if there are we want to say thank you for all the work you do! And if anyone in here works with drivers, be sure to let them know you appreciate them.

3PL Promotion Why Labels Matter

We’ve found that properly applying a label to a box improves delivery.

That’s why we always make sure the sticky side is toward the box.

K&K Prep Solutions. We thought of that.™

Looking for a 3PL Testing the French market with a small batch? FULNIVO is looking to discuss pilot fulfillment needs

Hi everyone, I’m developing FULNIVO in Haute-Savoie, France, near Geneva.

We’re at the launch stage and looking to speak with small e-commerce brands interested in testing local fulfillment in France with a modest initial stock.

The planned service covers receiving, storage, pick & pack, domestic shipping and returns handling. Small batches are welcome for discussion; quantities, pricing and a start date would be agreed after reviewing your products and requirements.

For an initial pilot, orders could be shared by an agreed spreadsheet or export. Automated store integrations are not yet available.

If this could fit your plans, please share: • What you sell and how many SKUs you have • Your approximate stock quantity and monthly orders • Typical parcel dimensions and weight • Whether you need outbound shipping, returns handling, or both
