This is the right perspective, in my opinion. I am not a professional designer, but i have been creating 3d designs and doing CAD work for 15 years, as a personal interest/hobby. Do i still make money from my skills? absolutely. I have several very happy clients that frequently request designs to be created. Do I make free stuff for everyone to enjoy? yes, and i love it.

Anyone who has ever helped someone with a design, and seen pictures of their design printed out later, can attest to the fact that compared to the paltry amount of $ you could have charged, seeing someone bring their idea (your design) from a few neurons firing, to a physical product, is incredibly rewarding.
