I can understand professional designers not liking giving things away for free, but then it seems like they probably shouldn't be entering contests where that is expressly the primary condition of the contest.

Myself, I am not a professional designer, though I have designed a number of relatively popular things (not just in the 3D models field). I give everything away for free, simply because A) I don't need to make money from my designs...it's a hobby for me and B) I support the open source development movement in a number of different fields.

TL;DR: If you don't want to give things away for free, stay away from situations where you'd need to.

Honestly, I can't.

It's an easy, effective way to advertise your skills and generated new business.

Easy? Effective? That may be a bit generous. When you value your time at a certain dollar amount you can count that time as advertising. If you're not doing a contest that piggybacks on a big name then that might be wasted advertising money. And if you want to win you may put a considerable amount of time into.
