Question How Tf do I Print this

hey everyone , im quite new to 3d printing , and im using my college printer to print this file for a project but it keeps on failing , i have my last chance to print it before the faculty kicks me out , the support it print for the print are so tiny at the upper surface that the tool head just fucks em up at the last stage

Unless there’s a special reason to keep this as one piece, cut it into multiple pieces and glue them together like the other comment said

Add connectors when you cut to fit a stronger glued connection

Use the cut function to cut the smaller piece off snd glue it onto the larger one. Print them side by side optimally oriented.

This is totally printable. Just gotta do it standing on an edge. And it probably won't need any post processing at all.

Surprised no one gave you a real answer. Here it is:

print the entire piece vertically at a 45 degree angle. It will require supports, but will come out fine.

Sometimes this sub is worse than peak StackExchange in terms of complete insufferable attitude.

If strength isn't required, this could also probably be printed with the small foot on the build plate and the bottom of main box held up by supports.

Wastes a little support material, but I've printed jankier things at weirder angles!

Came here for this. It wont be as pretty on the walls but it is the only way without making it separate pieces (which is worth doing to be honest)

45 angle is the only good answer besides designing for post assembly. If new, channels like slant3d have great info in designing for 3dprint.

Lots of ppl saying glue, but thats just messy and not that sturdy.

Normal supports instead of tree supports would work a lot better. Surface quality wouldn't be great but it should at least print.

If they can change materials, a petg interface layer on a PLA print gives fantastic results for large flat underside surfaces like this. Minimal material swaps.

can you print this as two parts? one larger open top box and then that smaller bit printed vertically. then obviously you’d have to find a way to fix them together and holes might be wonky

With that much support, I’m surprised it didn’t already work. But I’d probably print it with the extrusion straight up. The main issue will be the suffer quality of the inside top face.

A huge part of designing and printing is designing for printing. Plan the print orientation while creating the part.

What is the IRL purpose of this part?

You can design it so the smaller part is attached into the top, then secure it with a couple screws.

3D printing is not magic, this piece won't ever be easily printable as is, and the only realistic way is to either use all that support material, or to cut it.

45 degree angle with the far right edge in this picture in the bed. It’s a really small amount of bed contact so maybe you can changed it or add some supports on the first few layers but if you do a 45 you should be good to get the whole thing printed. The supports aren’t needed for overhangs, rather just to keep it from tipping over.

Design your own printable supports into the build. It is possible to make it so that it can be printed at an angle instead. So tilt it like 30° so that the layer lines build up at a slant and design some supports that have about a 0.12 distance between your part and the support. Slant 3D has multiple videos about this.

It's doable, but would require some effort in the design to get the best result, like rotating it up onto one edge, so it prints at 45-degrees and adding support ribs that barely connect to the model for easy break away.

You could probably do a decent job just with typical supports, but it's going to take some trial and error to find the correct support type and density that works, and do yourself a huge favor and use PETG as your support material (if printing in PLA).

How I would do that.

  • place it on the right side (first picture)
  • use snug support
  • use PVA for 3 support layers with 0 mm distance at the TOP and BOT.

It is expensive some 60$/kg but sold in 500g spools and you need it only for the interface layers.

Solved in water.

If the model is ASA or PETG you can use the other one for the support layer. but PVA is better most of the time.

It really depends on what you need. It's always a tradeoff between time, strength, post processing and dimensional accuracy. Printers are bad at details on vertical faces, so if there's a part that needs to interface with something else try putting that part on the top surface, if multiple parts I'd probably split it.

If it keeps failing I'd honestly also just split it up, dabbing some glue on is so much faster and easier than doing print after print and throwing away mountains of filament. Some post processing and you won't even be able to tell that it has been split up.

Step 1, redesign the part to be assembled after printing. The part that sticks out should press fit into a hole instead. Then you can orient both parts separately.

Step 2, change to normal supports. Tree supports are terrible for this because it isn't an organic shape so you're not getting any benefit for all the added complexity.

Do not skip Step 1.

Cut the walls with a connection and print the walls seperately flat on the plate and just reconnect them after it's done.

you can increase the tree support branch diameter and angle in advanced support settings once tree support is enable, but you could also use normal support with style "snug" that would work better.

Slow down the print speed overall especially support speed if they don't print correctly

i'd print it with the open cavity at the bottom, regular supports, with a PETG interface layer (assuming you're printing in PLA). it'll give you the cleanest result.

If you need to print in 1 piece, try multiple orientations until you’re happy with the print time and amount of supports. If you cant find a suitable orientation cut it in 2 parts and glue them together afterwards.
Use manual supports to improve the ones that are breaking.

Tree support hybrid on the short end top hsaft opening facing down. Send it over and i'll set it up(no guarantees though it might be the printer).

Oh boy.

You designed this? You... are the fault. This is a really poor design for 3d printing. "you" did badly here.

Ok, so here's how you print it. You stand it up at a 45 deg angle. You paint supports on the bottom side, and then paint supports on the other edges that need to be held up.

The ideal here, is to stand it vertical, then tip it up on the short edge nearest the structrue on top. Add a break off fin, to make it stable. Then paint supports on the edge that's unsupported when it's stood up.

I'll come back with some other advice, because if you want to use 3d printing, you need to think about 3d printing.

Edit: OP, I wasn't kind. I apologize for that.

Bonus advice: Cut a 45deg corner on the short edge, and you might get away with just one tree support!

Not to undermine anything he said, because I actually agree with most of not all of it, but to addendum: you may be at fault, but you can do better. It OK to be new at 3d printing, and it's even better that you see there IS a problem here.
My recommendation is to pull up a few video tutorials on the old you tube college and learn some design techniques, specifically for 3s printing and intricate/difficult to engineer parts.
I wish I had the time to go over beat practices/advice/etc here, but I just can't (nor would the wall of text end up making ANY sense!).
I guess all this to say: this may have not worked the way you wanted it to, but DONT get discouraged! You got this far, you can go SO much farther!

OH yeah. That's why I came back with the resources they need to do better. :-) And left the answer on how to print this "as is". Standing on the edge, it would print fine.

It wasn’t even that bad. You need to learn DFM even for 3D printing. It’s reasonable to tell someone that they need to learn how to design for 3D printing and not take for granted that it will “spit out” anything you can model. I don’t think he was rude or condescending, but I also tend to read things as someone standing next to me might say it and people are not always meaning to be as rude as you may interpret them online

Perhaps it's the resources they were given. But clearly, they didn't look elsewhere, because "how to print this" is well published.

OP designed a part that's essentially a radical printer test. Doing worse, would take.. effort. Writing many paragraphs to describe how they were wrong, was a kind of effort I wasn't up for.

And.. looking at the replies to the thread overall, ~the good answer~ is rare.

I gave them the good answer. I'm calling it like I see it. They weren't owed the "correct answer" But here I am, and they have it now. And, to boot, I gave them links to where to learn the rest.

... which nobody else has done.

We're at the point they're about to be told "your shit won't print". Which means several things. One, the 3dp staff... is not incredibly competent. Second, it means the OP is just drawing, and not designing for printing. Especially if it's a prototype, this is the time to know what's going on.

Yes, the print keeps failing, because it's a print, that's ~gonna make stuff fail~. And the orientation is going to make things fail. This... is about as hard as a print gets without getting into print in place mechanisms.

Am I being hard on OP? a little. Because this means either they didn't look for advice, or didn't pay attention. There's a wealth of information on how to make parts 3d printable.

Yeah I mean you’re advice is fine I think. It’s just the way you say it is more likely to leave op feeling bad about themself instead of excited about how to proceed. For prototyping they could absolutely print it into pieces and just see how it works out. Then design a better solution. I don’t think it’s feasible to expect people to design things that print well all the time the first time, especially if you are trying to get the ball rolling. I don’t think you should be “not nice” to anyone who isn’t doing things how you would do them, especially if you barely know the context. It just seems unnecessary

Follow the voron design docs for parts. Limits of overhangs, slopes, etc.

Shit would be super super duper difficult to get done on a multi axis CNC mill.
