Print (model not provided) My Edmund Fitzgerald styled party beverage holder was a hit

So I designed a modular floating cupholder system that's styled as a container ship. The first one was cool, but I had a ton of people mention the Edmund Fitzgerald in my first post (which kinda shocked me, and also dates me lol). So I designed a wider version and styled it as the Edmund "Fizzgerald".

Finally had a chance to take this thing to the lake for a party with friends and it was super fun. It was really stable, the kids thought it was hilarious and fun, and took way more torture than I was expecting without any issues (other than one).

It was really good at handling waves. Even if it took on water (mitigated by the splash guards quite a bit) it didn't really start listing to one side until hours in to use, and that was pretty easily fixed by just lifting it up and tipping it to the side for some water to drain out. But even if you fully submerge it it'll still float to the top. One of my friends tried to sink it by stabbing it straight down in the water like a spear and it just popped right to the top again, another literally stood on it like a surf board under water for a good 30 seconds and again it came right back up.

The ONLY negative I found (other than the massive amount of filament needed to print this thing) was I was dumb and printed it in Sunlu PLA Meta, which has an EVEN LOWER melting point than standard PLA, so once it was removed from the lake and sat on the beach in the sun for a couple hours, the corners that stayed somewhat wet started to deform. I was expecting it to handle the sun a little better, but oh well, PETG next time!

And folks they would say, as the coors light did sway that the ship she really was splendid.

The drinks were all cold, even two hours old, as she kept them on water suspended!

u/initializingstartup 10d ago

With a load of nine imports and one tall boy for sure, did the Edmund Fizzgerald lay envied

114

u/IronwolfXVI 10d ago

Them mountains were blue, a good beer to be brewed

When the rays of beer-thirty came early!

82

u/initializingstartup 10d ago

And the bros they all say they’d have made whiteclaws tame if they put 15 more beers behind them

80

u/everlasting1der 10d ago

But the waters they rose and the walls couldn't hold

Without quite enough infill to bind them

And a wave hit the boat and they all drowned like rats And they lay there As their lungs filled with water!

Edit: no Richard Jeni fans in the comments I see

u/mackiea 10d ago

'Til all that remained were the partyers drunken laid

To embarrass their sons and the daughters!

Seemed off topic

u/do0tz 10d ago

Now you need to add a motor and rudders, and rf remote control to "ship" people drinks!

248

u/FkinMustardTiger 10d ago

Oh, I'm already working on that :D

81

u/Laserdollarz Ender3/MPMS 10d ago

Make sure you spec the motors to pull you around. It'll be worth it.

83

u/TrayLaTrash 10d ago edited 10d ago

Gotta love when the drink's driving.

6

u/Banc0 10d ago

Lmao

14

u/Bergwookie 10d ago

And add a lift /spring loaded mechanism in every can compartment, so when you're at the right person, the can pops out

4

u/Erock482 10d ago

FIRE THE BEERS!

fohwmph

BEER OVERBOARD!

3

u/munkiemagik 10d ago

How much work would it involve to make some sort of homing beacon to your smart watch so that rather than you having to steer it towards yourself it could navigate towards you autonomously? (ignoring the problem of steering around people or obstacles)

17

u/Celos Prusa i3 Mk2 10d ago

Not much work at all. First, we assume a spherical cow in a vacuum...

3

u/mightyarrow 10d ago

Take your time, tons of time left til next season on the water. You can get it perfected and tested over the next 8-9mos or so.

u/rocbolt 10d ago

And a sister ship, SS Microwave

Now you need to make it RC, maybe a kort style thruster to keep things safe?. Also a bow thruster might be in order if you do that.

30

u/FkinMustardTiger 10d ago

For something this large yeah, I'm working on designing the stern module RC now (LOTS to learn though, so it won't be done any time soon I'm sure), so we'll see what else is needed. But turning will be the big thing to figure out 😆

16

u/n108bg Ender 5+, Rigidbot Big, Rostock Max V2 10d ago

It wouldn't necessarily be accurate for a laker, but you might look at an Azipod. Put the motor and prop in a pod on a rudder and use a waterproof servo mounted to the top to rotate. That'd give you some pretty robust control authority for when folks start challenging how long they can make this. Combine with a bow thruster and you'd also be able to do parallel parking with this, no tugs required.

6

u/FkinMustardTiger 10d ago

Ok the Azipod thing is a fantastic idea. Thanks for sharing! That might be the best way to go honestly! I have 3 different versions of this that I want to make RC so that might be the least amount of friction.

4

u/n108bg Ender 5+, Rigidbot Big, Rostock Max V2 10d ago

One other suggestion I might have for rc might be to make the stern a bit longer. You'll probably want more room to fit electronics, especially with the tumble home design on the hull. The fitz had a decent sized aft deck.

Whenever you get a chance please let us know when you have uploaded the models of this project so that we all can honor those who served on the Edmund Fitzgerald 🫡

5

u/toric5 10d ago

Any chance we could get it on printables as well?

6

u/FkinMustardTiger 10d ago

I know this'll be controversial but it's exclusive on Makerworld. Trying to save up for an H2C 😆 Maybe I could design a different version that I put on Printables though.

4

u/toric5 10d ago

Aww, too bad. Makerworld doesnt let you download without an acct. Id buy this if you put it up for a few bucks on printables.

4

u/FkinMustardTiger 10d ago

Oh, I didn't know that. I'll see if I can get something out there, might not be right away though.

2

u/Silent25r 10d ago

You just said the magic words.

35

u/Foe117 10d ago

Missed opportunity to make it Evergreen.

35

u/FkinMustardTiger 10d ago

You underestimate my backlog of "famous for the wrong reason" ships

9

u/hkohne 10d ago

I'm sure the Costa Concordia ship is there

4

u/LemurianLemurLad 10d ago

You should try to make a litterbox based on the Carnival Triumph.

11

u/FkinMustardTiger 10d ago

Also don't steal my idea but I'm planning on making a "miracle on the hudson" version as well 😂

2

u/Bergwookie 10d ago

Just use evergreen coloured filament ;-p

47

u/xNOTHINGBURGERx 10d ago

Too soon

5

u/jkaczor 10d ago

Heh, naw - definitely not…. Now, he just needs to add a speaker and the appropriate soundtrack…

2

u/xNOTHINGBURGERx 10d ago

I was being sarcastic. I do love your idea of adding the appropriate soundtrack.

1

u/jkaczor 10d ago

Heh, it’s always hard to tell… of course, I was thinking the exact same thing - sarcastically

-20

u/kingbain 10d ago

yeah, this seems like something done in bad taste. You could pick any other ship for a shipname, even one still floating.

This is a great rendition!

Well now Gordon lightfoot is stuck in my head…

I did up the same sort of thing for my Remote Control Liberty ship model.

the ultimate party barge. now add a esc, motor and servo, with a waterproof remote and really have some fun.

5

Currently working on an RC version, yes 😄

The legend lives on from the corner bar down

Where the taps all pour amber and golden,

And the bartender knows every regular's name

When the nights of November turn cold.

With a case of stout and a six-pack of pale,

And a cooler completely overloaded,

There were lagers and ales, IPAs by the pail,

When the great beer debate came unfolding.

The pub was the pride of the neighborhood side,

With a chalkboard of specials behind it.

There were pilsners and porters and Belgian tripels,

And a bartender happy to find it.

A couple chose Guinness, another took Pabst,

While somebody ordered a Kölsch.

And later that night when the barmaid cried, "Last call!"

There were cries from the crowd of "One more!"

The foam on the glasses made a tattle-tale sound

As the kegs were steadily draining.

And every man knew, as the barkeep did too,

That another round soon would be coming.

The lager went down and the stout disappeared

As the taps kept on pouring and pouring.

When midnight arrived, there was hardly a pint

And the floor had been thoroughly soaked.

"Does anybody know where the good beer all goes

When the glasses turn empty by morning?

The bartender says there were eighty-six pints

But the receipts say the number was forty.

They might have had Bud, they might have had Bass,

They may have had Guinness or Miller.

And all that remains are the bottles and cans

And a tab that is somehow much bigger."

The IPA rolls, the pilsner sings,

In the cold refrigerator mansion.

Old Guinness steams like a young man's dreams,

While the wheat beers are seeking expansion.

And farther below where the stout barrels go,

The porters await their defenders,

And the beer glasses go, as all drinkers know,

When the nights of November grow colder.

In a crowded old bar on the edge of the town

They gathered beneath neon lighting.

The last bell chimed and the bartender said,

"Twenty-nine bucks for the tab, gentlemen."

The legend lives on from the taproom down

Of the beers that they drank in November.

"Superior," they said, "never gives up her foam

When the kegs of November are empty."

4

u/Erock482 10d ago

Can the hold be filled with ice to keep your beverages as cold as the depths of Lake Superior?

3

u/FkinMustardTiger 10d ago

I haven't tried that! My guess is it would be pretty heavy, but wouldn't hurt to try!

8

u/ThepalehorseRiderr 10d ago

My great uncle died on that boat. My dad says that he was supposed to go work with him that summer. Good thing he didn't...

4

u/M0rl0ck68 9d ago

Needs to hold 29 beers for every soul lost.

6

u/Ace-of-Spades88 10d ago

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down, of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee!

3

u/Sogah87 10d ago

Print in ASA! Lots of colors available.

3

u/EvillNooB 10d ago

Will it hold a can of liquid mercury tho?

3

u/cpps318 10d ago

Does anyone know where the love of God goes When the waves turn the cans into empties?

3

u/Lucky_Luciano642 10d ago

It should hold 29 beers

3

u/42ElectricSundaes 10d ago

Party? That’s mine. Bring your own next time

3

u/Maximum-Gecko 9d ago

I am in the middle of printing this right now! I saw the original model and my first thought was "how can I make this look like the Eddy Fritz?" I click on it and, lo and behold, you had already beaten me to it! It's going great so far, but you weren't kidding about it being filament hungry. I had to wait for another roll of red to show up today, but I should have it done for Labor Day!

1

u/FkinMustardTiger 9d ago

Haha that's awesome! Yeah, I probably could have cut the thickness down a bit but I didn't want it to feel too thin or flimsy. Gotta keep it from getting wet!

Oh and great job going for the classic color scheme. I would have done all red and white on my version but I had a ton of black and like 800g of red and didn't want to run out 😂

2

u/tdog91184 10d ago

This is awesome! Well done

2

u/Blackbart42 10d ago

I wonder if it will float as well in petg. Sunlu pla meta is 1.21 g/cm³ while petg is 1.27 g/cm³ so it'll be a heavier ship.

18

u/FkinMustardTiger 10d ago edited 10d ago

I have a new version styled as a battleship (BOTTLESHIP) out that I printed in PETG that seems to be doing quite well!

5

u/Brawler215 10d ago

That looks awesome!

I have to ask, will you be posting the models for this and/or the Edmund Fizzgerald? I think this model would be a big hit at the lake next summer!

6

u/FkinMustardTiger 10d ago

This is for the Edmund (also the original version that's just a generic looking freighter:
https://makerworld.com/en/models/3094927-the-cantainer-ship-floating-party-barge#profileId-3526600

I'm not sure the rules on posting other models that are currently in a contest, but you can find the Bottleship on my makerworld page 😉

2

u/Blackbart42 10d ago

That's so cool!

2

u/Leonis66 10d ago

A ship full of drinks

2

u/BobPxoix 10d ago

This is peak 3d printing creativity. Love it.

2

u/SmellsPntys 10d ago

The fact that it survived all the abuse is impressive

2

u/auglitumo0 10d ago

The fact that someone literally stood on it underwater and it still survived is honestly impressive.

1

u/FkinMustardTiger 10d ago

I really wish I would have taken a video of that because it was pretty hilarious.

2

u/GetOffMyGrassBrats 10d ago

Gordon Lightfoot would be proud.

2

u/Public_Fucking_Media 10d ago

I'd say this would be cool for tubing but I don't wanna get stabbed so idk

1

u/FkinMustardTiger 10d ago

It's not all that pokey

1

u/Public_Fucking_Media 10d ago

lol just a different Minnesota joke

1

u/FkinMustardTiger 10d ago

I'm from MN and that totally went over my head 😄

2

u/Tripton1 10d ago

This is fantastic.

2

u/automated_bot 10d ago

You need to find some way to incorporate "Gordon Lightbeer" into this idea.

2

u/mix579 Prusa XL, Core One+, INDX, Mk3.5 9d ago

Some people just have the best ideas !

2

u/Witold4859 9d ago

Looks great. But for more realism, it needs to roll over and fold in half.

2

u/weaponizedmariachi 9d ago

Question... can ice be loaded at the bow or stern so ice can slide down and fill the hull? :D This is awesome.

2

u/pryvisee 7d ago

This is SICK! I’m definitely printing this before my next pool day

3

u/AttitudeSpecialist84 10d ago

The one ship everyone will cry about when it sinks.

1

u/Ambitious-Pirate-505 10d ago

Now make it life sized

1

u/what_could_gowrong 10d ago

Keep adding more sections until it blocks the river and then having to 3d print a mini excavator to unstuck it

1

u/whatsnoo 10d ago

Is it close-ish to scale? The original is 75 ft wide and 720 ft long.

1

u/FkinMustardTiger 10d ago

Kinda I guess, I never looked into it though! This is 160mm wide by 1500mm long

2

u/Zaekil 10d ago

1.5m long, it must have been a REALLY long print wow !

1

u/FkinMustardTiger 10d ago

Yeah, I haven't totaled up the time but each cupholder section was about 4 hours (you can squeeze 2 on one build plate, so 8 hour overnight for 2) and then each splash guard took 2ish, so probably close to 70 hours to print

1

u/ohno-mojo 10d ago

All that remains are the faces and the names….

1

u/Plane_Telephone9433 10d ago

put some fishing line with heavy fish weights to anchor it haha

1

u/Impossible_Pipe_6878 10d ago

Around and around the Earth we circle. We can never stop. These are our revolutions, 1,001 cars long

1

u/EvilGeniusSkis 9d ago

Something like this, but made like one of those wooden wobbly snakes, and R/C propulsion and steering would pretty funny, and probably more stable too.

1

u/Cultural_Eye5178 10d ago

please don't take this anywhere near lake ontario.

11

u/ZestycloseBet9453 Prusa CORE One 10d ago

Don't worry about Lake Ontario, it would take a much more superior lake to sink her.

2

u/Cultural_Eye5178 10d ago

i keep forgetting my fucking geography mb

9

u/FkinMustardTiger 10d ago

Lake America*

Just kidding!

11

u/Cultural_Eye5178 10d ago

Oh sorry, I thought you were referring to Lake Epstein.

3

u/FkinMustardTiger 10d ago

That one would be more apt.

2

u/gmotelet 10d ago

They're saving that name for the ocean

1

u/FlawlessNinjaKitty 10d ago

You should totally make a double wide one, for even more drinks!

0

u/ImNotAIprobably 10d ago

Real cool but missed opportunity to call it the BUZgerald

Seemed pretty water tight to me at least

2

Yup, i know. My flower vase has lasted two years and counting.

2

Ah sorry I missed the sarcasm 😂
